I like this last line of this stuff article: http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/4623635/Wellington-Phoenix-buoyant-after-Adelaide-win

"Weather permitting the Phoenix will have a recovery session at Bondi Beach tomorrow, a more relaxing exercise now some sharks have stopped circling."

Nice try TM, but it doesn't take into account (I assume) digital readership over that period. Yes, that's right the DomPost has more than one system by which it plays - bit like the phoenix really

Agree. It would be hard to imagine this kind of coverage pre-Nix days.

And as a postscript, I'm back to being a subscriber of the Dompost. When they offered a discount on subscriptions of around 30 pieces of silver, I couldn't resist.

I know, I know, its serious!

We got a letter from the Dom Post a while back. Fluttering it's reduced subs at us.

Haven't missed it to be honest - except for sale ads.

Main news I can get from skimming thru Stuff or Granny H online, occasionally Nightline.

Football I can get from here, 442, UK sites etc.

Plus I am much less angsty when all the Terry/Nix sh!te comes up for periodic sales boost drives since it's not my money supporting the muck-raking.

Hamish Bidwell. Still a rugby head douche bag.

And the answer to your question Hamish is .... NO!

It was just the 'whats on tv this weekend' snippet. Starts of saying footy only gets coverage when there is no rugby on, and that the only news worthy story of the year was Paston breaking his leg. wtf?

It's the "top 5 Viewing" column on back page of the sports extra.

No 1 is tonight's Rugby ... "No disrespect to the sports that have filled our screens in the weeks since the All Blacks' tour of the UK finished but, gee, isn't it good to have the footy back? Not necessarily to watch, because it's actually pretty dreary stuff, but knowing it's there this weekend and pretty much every weekend for months to come is a comforting thought. ...."

Phoenix match No 2, but far from complementary stuff written there.

Fkn hell

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Haven't seen it yet, but I wonder if it is a bit of a wind up on his part?

It is pretty dreary stuff as he acknowledges.

I suppose if it is on for so long that might be an incentive for me to waste $80/month or whatever it is on sky (but of course once the EPL finishes it'll be rugby on sky sport1-3 and the news).  Plus side will be that I am as grown up as zonknz (perhaps not really a plus).

Good article. Although some points are a bit unrealistic imo.
NZF funding a youth team would be awesome, and a potential win win for both NZF and Nix. Not that its a new concept.

Usually indicates a good idea.

It's fair to say (former) Chairman Dow and I have our differences, but conceptually what he is suggesting I agree with.

There are practical challenges no doubt, some of which he has knowingly ignored in his article, but still these are ideas that should continue to be brought up and explored, not considered once and cast off as too hard.

I'd rather see NZF spending their money on a Nix youth team than on a National Women's Youth League and Futsal.  Sorry to people involved in those two things.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

agree with a lot of his points, NZF ignoring the benefit and impact of the Nix is stupid and is an idea that needs to be reversed, without the nix fottball in NZ would be in dire straits. His comment "It could lobby Sky TV to show Phoenix matches as delayed broadcasts, rather than live, to boost crowds and revenue." is the only bit I can't agree with, I want to see every game live, if they (sky) want to play delayed coverage then they can do it on Prime.

Terry would probably end up spend their money on bailing himself out of bankruptcy

I don't think NZF ignore/under-value the Nix either btw.  Just think there is always room to do more.

That's an understatement! An entire thread got deleted because of you two!! I remember being online that night, f**k it was awesome, like watching bare-knuckle boxing.

Going back and reading the first few pages of the "Phoenix dead" thread still gives me the giggles. Best comment from Napier Phoenix -  "coitus interuptus".

Smithy vs Dow was one of the best throwdowns in Yellow Fever history.

I think some of what he says is fair but his article (and his aargument) lacks nuance - therefore it's too easy to dismiss it all out of hand.

He should have just picked one issue - or 2 or 3 and argued them properly as well as actually setting out how they can be implemented.  It just sort of reads like a bullet point list of a best case scenario.

I agree with a few of the points - buts showing the games delayed rather than live screws us out-of-towners. Understand the logic, but unless you can show it live out side of Welly and delayed in the capital - like they can do in Oz for some sports - it will make it hard for non-Wellingtonians to follow the team. Anyway, back to drinking, it is after all Friday.

Let's not be too picky. That piece was a whole third of a page of pro-Nix-ness in the Dom Post (couple of big photos to pad it out). Not to be sniffed at, especially on the same day as they put that stupid non-story about some of the players being paid a day late on the front page!

T-X clearly overkill - but did you not think that there was a whole lot more to that late payment story than meets the eye??  I thougth the players union guy was saying a lot without saying anything

Wow, perhaps you'd better translate for us who don't speak sign language, then.

(Surprised by Dow's article. The words SACK TERRY were not to be found.)

Depends what you're looking for I suppose.

The PFA obviously have a heightened sense of concern about the Phoenix at the moment (like a lot of people) and apparently this isn't the first time the Nix have paid players a day or two late.

That said, they have always paid the players in the past and all businesses have payroll issues from time to time without getting themselves on the front page of the Dom Post.

I thought the most significant thing was Schwab saying "There have been some concerns raised by many regarding the current owner of Wellington Phoenix but there's a strong level of commitment to support him, given what he's done for the game". The PFA obviously feel that they are better off supporting Terry, rather than trying to get him removed. That tells me that they (and the Nix players) aren't aware of, or don't want to promote, any alternative ownership options.

You may have read something else into it though?

You have read a lot more into it there than I can see. It means they are supporting him now out of loyalty and because the wages are being paid, late or not, to the players. There is no basis there at all for your last sentence.

A good "A-League, Nix, Mini Judas" section of the sports supplement today.

Even a reference to Finbar Saunders on the back page.

Well done DP.
