I wish it were that simple for all the matches

It's much harder to care about anything after sitting through 2 hours of the game.

Just a call back to the Gaskerin lot, Patrick mentioned he watched footage of a game where there was a pen and then Gascoigne scored from the next play. Was it this one?

By way of update to all you avid listeners.

There is an episode in the can still awaiting edit by Pat - but I think you'll probably have that very soon. (Teaser note: the working title for this episode is "Drunk")

Separate to that though you can expect a flurry of episodes to get us back up to date by the end of July. Pat's commitments die down and we will actually have recording time available again.

We currently sit three episodes behind in terms of recording so there may even be a mythical double header record to get things back up to date..oh god. Apologies for the sporadic nature of late, but suffice to say our penance will be done through a compressed schedule to get things back on track.

Superfan Ruchesko also sent through a new update for those of you interested:

Ruchesko wrote:

Regretably, I've gotta tell you that I am not in fact a Japanese expat. I'm actually as British as the average New Zealand football coach. Incidentally, turns out I'm based not a million miles away from Paul Ifill's old digs. Also, tell Patrick of course Phoenix City's more uplifting than the Coast pod! Granted, the first episode I caught was their post-mortem of the April 14th massacre, but if they have a sense of humour over there, I couldn't find it. As for my trawl through your archive, can't say I set out intending to do the lot, but once you find gems like the Borneo Pusamania vs Semen Padang incident, it gets hard to stop. Finally, full disclosure: I've also gone through what few bits of In The Zone Dale left up. All-round inferior product, but sounds like I missed something special with Smithy.

You can find him here if you are keen to chat.

A few episodes back, you guys joked about what would happen if you had a massive fight, & had to carry on until Episode 27. Then you watched the game separately. I wasn't too surprised, given how many times Dave calls Patrick a liar at the beginning of "Valentine's" (continuing a theme from previous weeks). But a beautiful friendship seemed to be ending, and I was worried - was it my fault? Would I be forced to choose one over the other? What would I do on weekends?

Then I posted a plea for the promised "Drunk" episode to be up before I went on school holiday duty, and Patrick duly replied it would be up last weekend.

Almost a week on, & I am no longer worried. Dave is right - Patrick is a liar.

Don't worry you'll hear more than a few lies in "Drunk" now that it's released!

I'll let you spot them for yourselves!

Another UK based listener here.

Also, flatland has been made into an animated movie which is  absolutely dreadful. I think the whole thing is on YouTube. The women make an awful screeching noise as they move around, so they don’t impale anyone.

I've been very curious of this TWGOAT podcast, haven't quite taken the plunge yet, I can't help but think to myself, is this a constructive use of my time??? hahahaha

If someone could recommend a particular episode, I'd prefer to try that first rather than start at the beginning and go through the whole lot... interested to hear your opinions... which one is the most enjoyable listen?

Episode 6.

The first few episodes we were still finding our feet so they aren't the best. But episode 6 is still my favourite episode and the one I'd reccomend you start at.

Episode one is definitely not the best episode - but it is the one where we describe the game itself in the most detail. So probably not the best place to start anymore but also does provide good background knowledge for much of the rest of the nonsense we end up discussing. Start with Ep 6 and if you like it then go back through the others.

just arrived at episode 1.

At first thought it was a team wellington thing. Then this week saw GOAT (greatest of all time)mentioned elsewhere.

And then Patrick referenced it in a Lowry conversation.

Thread title needs work. But enjoying it so far!

An Adelaide away special series could be a thing! Plenty of humiliation there

Well if anyone had read this thread from page 1 I spoil it there too. No regrets!

That moment of silence (actually, I think Jake was speaking off mic) after Patrick says he needs coriander & chilli for guacamole, while Dave is trying to drag the convo back to Parkhouse & football.

I'm thinking Dave was wishing he wasn't at his own flat, as he wanted to just stand up and storm off.

SPOILER ALERT - someone cries during the next episode.

Home again -- Wellington band singing about returning to Wellington, the Phoenix travel a lot so that works. It's also considered an iconic song but is not claimed by Rugby or Yachting.

Ticks a lot of boxes.

A decent suggestion. Probably lacks slightly in the "singable" stakes but plausible for sure...unlike skatman.

It's hard to know if that was a subconscious dig at Pat's music choices or something else.

My list:

- Patrick's  breakdown reminds me of doing a CELTA course years ago. 3 or so weeks in, we were all pretty stressed & tired, and a stupid joke about confusing 'foreskin' & 'forehead' had 3 of us in hysterics, & unable to explain what it was all about to the rest of the class.

- "Wellington" - The Muttonbirds.? (I'd suggest 'You can't beat Wellington - Datsun Violets, but the lyrics are geared to the rugby)

- As much as I like 'Why Does Love', it's been used a lot for other stuff. The one time I took my wife to the 7s, they played it so much, she thought it was NZ's national anthem

- I wouldn't want to get stuck on a desert island with Patrick. If I'm going to be stranded, I want to be with someone who can manage toast and tea.

I also reckon Jake needs his own fan club/forum/pod. The strong, silent one, sitting in the background sipping whisky.

He's a bit like Peter Stormare, to Dave & Patrick's William H Macy & Steve Buscemi, except I imagine Jake wearing a Hugh Hefner-style smoking jacket.

Also, can you make the part where Jo rips on Patrick and exposes his lies as a weekly segment? (emails/text will do if she can't make it in person)

I've let Jake know he is building quite the fan club I'm not sure he wants to ruin the mystique he has gained.

Also I'm more commonly told I'm like David Mitchell but I reckon W H Macy is a step up so I'll take it.

Nah, David Mitchell is funny.
