Since it maybe that NZ will have a baseball team in the ABL, should try bring this thread back from the dead. http://web.theabl.com.au/news/article.jsp?ymd=2018...

The Australian Baseball League has tonight confirmed a New Zealand team has been added to the competition.

The New Zealand team will be one of two new teams, alongside one from Korea. The two will join the six current Australian teams.

The eight teams will form two conferences, playing a 160-game season across 10 weeks. Each team will play eight home and away games against the other three teams in its conference, with cross-conference teams matching up in a single, four-game series each season.

Assuming NZ Baseball signs off on it, I wonder what they will pick for a name. I think The New Zealand Taiaha's might be kinda cool given the nature of the sport, tho I admit I am unsure if it would be culturally appropriate to use the word/imagery in this context.

QBE is not big enough. They'll hit the ball out of the ground more often than not.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Wouldn't they need to build a proper stand? You know, behind Home plate, down the base lines and something at the back of the stadium to block off the the vehicle traffic. It all takes up space. I mean I don't expect US type attendances but I would be hoping for a crowd that can afford proper players. This isn't Haitaitai Park on a Saturday afternoon. A roster of 30+ players etc etc Sorry Mods, distracting in the wrong thread. Can you cut and paste my input in this thread to the Baseball thread please. Apologies to everyone.
Well the Brisbane team that won the title the last three years has a ground (shown above in Balbi's post) with a seated capacity of 800, so the ground might not need too much built around it.

I messaged Shane Harmon the other day on Twitter asking if the Stadium would look at trying to host some games (He is a big baseball fan & noted after the SCG hosted a MLB game, that they can fit a diamond in as well). He said the overlay costs would make it a big challenge but he will be watching with interest and who knows.

NZF will need a new venue for Handi Final?

That was sad to read and learn of at the time. I hope the same Auckland fans don't give up on the pending new Auckland A League franchise. The Tuatara's had some nice kit too. Wish I had bought some.

Anyone following along with MLB 2026, or is it just me in here?

Have followed the game since the early 2000's through my neighbour's involvement in the game. He ended up being drafted by the Blue Jay's (never played majors) and played for New Zealand. I think he's actually still involved in the game back here - as well as his brother and his dad.

Anyway I've ended up leaning into the game much more heavily in recent years as I moved away from from other sports. Generally find the game is also far more easily accessible through ESPN on Disney + nowadays too.

I kind of do, mainly when it gets to the playoffs but don't have a team myself. I love Jomboy videos on interesting plays and voice overs and follow MLB on Reddit.

Got in to it a lot about 6-7 years ago now.

Haven't watched it as much in recent years except for the World Series and one or two games here or there.

Just too many games to follow it closely imo.

Great sport to have on in the background though.

Three for me, and two for them.

Definitely one I would like to go watch when I get to America. Few times I've been have always been during wrong season or visited when games are in the cities I'm in. So have seen NHL, NFL and NCAA football but no baseball yet.

Yeah the only game I've ever been to was the Los Angeles Angels v Oakland A's way back in 2009. Cool experience!

America certainly knows how to do a sports event - Even if it was only the regular season. Disneyland is also just down the road from Angel Stadium too, so the group I was with made it a massive day out.

I follow the San Diego Padres, so I must have pissed someone off in my past life because they've also earnt that loveable loser tag! 🥲
