So, who else went?
YF spottings by myself include 2 outside the Boiler Room at approx 3pm and 1 in the D area at around 4pm. Also saw a guy in a proper Phoenix shirt as i was leaving at around 11.30

Who else moshed it to Rage? Who else waited hours in the eftpos line? Who else inhaled tons of second hand weed?

Share your experiences i loved it!!

The wife and I rocked out with our cocks out.

Rage totally cranked. The best experience of my short life. Shihad 2nd, Opshop next and The Checks after that. I love how the crowd abused the f**k out of B---jork. I mean WFT??!!??

To quote Zach on his song March of Death
"Without just cause or reason, without legal or moral justification, and without a thread of proof that iraq directly threatens the security of the United States, the Bush administration has headed to war. As i am writing this , bombs are raining upon the the defenseless civilians of bahgdad in a continuation of a policy that has already claimed the lives of over 1 million innocent iraqi people. People just like us who want democracy but find themselves cornered by a dictator on one side, naked U.S. agression on another, and the oil beneath theyre country; for which it appears they are to be massacred.

lies, sanctions, and cruise missles have never created a free and just society. only everyday people can do that. which is why im joining the millions world wide who have stood up to oppose the Bush administrations attempt to expand the U.S. empire at the expense of human rights at home and abroad. In this spirit im releasing this song for anyone who is willing to listen. i hope it not only makes us think, but also inspires us to act and raise our voices. - Zack de la Rocha, March 19th, 2003"

what was up with bjork and her enchore  stupid woman  we didn't want to see you anyway

also was the timetable printed in error or did the knightwatchman(tom morello) and battles swap time slots  i'm gutted i missed battles but you really had to park up early to get a good spot for shihad and more importantly rage
did anyone see battles?? if so how were they
think they need to have a rethink on who plays the main stages next year most people ended up crammed into the boiler room or the essential stage
still once again had a blast

The timetable printed on the net was correct. The timetable in the booklet was wrong. Hence I got to see Tom. Some heavy stuff in his set including a re-worked song Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

lol it was,hes living in nz atm because of usa's politics
Permalink Permalink
about 18 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Yeah i was reading about that. In 2005 the NZ government under the guise of the Overseas Investment Commission refused Serj permission to buy about a 13 hectare block of land out in the Waitaks to build a home and a recording studio to help garner record deals for local acts that lacked exposure in the US. He intended to live in NZ in the medium term and become a citizen because he loves it here so much and is thankful that it is clean, a neutral policy government on war, oil etc and he is living a free man with no hassles of him, his beliefs or his privacy. Tom and Serj both run Axis of Justice, their combined activism group.

OIC blocked the sale on the grounds that there was no interest/benefit to New Zealand..... Go figure.

The biggest surprise for me and also quite delightful was how good The Checks were. They had a really good full sound and some good solid songs - reminded me a little of The Who. I would have thought they might have bought Supergroove over to one of the main stages. It was either Rage or Supergroove because you had no show of seeing both based on how slow people were moving up there and the limited room.

Unlucky, I ran from the area before he started.  Most reviews I have heard made that a good call.

Unkle and LCD Soundsystem were my highlights, along with Arcade Fire.

Phoenix Foundation were good but had a disappointingly small crowd.

The sound mix on the Green/Essential stage was rubbish - it was all drums and bass. Hence Kate Nash was inaudible.

I got a few 'Go Phoenix' comments for my retro ricki; saw maybe 4 others including HN.

K lads...Shihad has been uploaded to Megaupload.  Bit rate is 128.  Reasonable quality. Can hear a bit of background noise but still very listenable.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XDOXRX70

Instructions:

1) Click on above link (obviously)

2) Once the page has loaded, enter the 3 digit code in the space provided (near the top of page) and hit enter.

3) Once the new page uploads, you have to wait 45 seconds for the counter to run down. Once the timer run downs, it changes to become "free download".  Hit that and you're away laughing.

Let me know if anyone has any problems.  Should also have Rage, liam finn and supergroove  (and maybe some more) sorted in the next few days.

Enjoy

lame as cosimo? are u havin a laff?

while the politically charged messages may not be everyones cup of tea, morellos guitars with Tim Cs Bass and Brads drums are an unbelievable mix - one to behold in this day of "new" bands playing "old music".

Rage 4 Life, Death to the Mint Chicks.

It wasn't either or.  I manged to make it from the far grandstand over to supergroove and only missed one song.  And I know of others who made it over there with plenty of time

Meanwhile Rage fans buy the albums, tshirts and generally get sucked into the consumerism that is at the heart of the 'US Empire'? Except for 2nd best who prefers bootlegs HarryHotspur2008-01-23 21:58:49

The irony: while Rage tell us all about oppression by US superpower, some 'fan' suggest that the way to dance is by kicking lumps out of each other.

Violence: the last resort of the incompetent.

what are you on man??? Tire me and vietnow are songs from EVIL EMPIRE. Probably the most political album ratm put out.

Moshing is not dancing man, it has existed for a very long time and is violent (there are usually fights)...get used to it. It is certainly not for the faint hearted. Its a way to release agression and anger, RATM write very agressive and intense music so moshing is acceptable.

Why i was annoyed was there were people inside who had no clue when riffs began and ended and the words to the songs when Zack puts the mic to the crowd.

I have waited 11 years for RATM to play NZ, i was 8 when i started listening to them and was too young for their first gigs down here. It slighltly pissed me off that boppers were in there and some fans were outside and "missed" out on a bit of more intense moshing.

RAGE ARE THE ONLY TRUE POLITICAL BAND AROUND, this whole f**k bush thing is a fad now. The funny thing is rage said it 9 years ago

WTF?

Dead Kennedy's (Jello Biafra still going strong with many side projects)
Crass
Ripcord
Extreme Noise Terror (still around I think after wee over 20 yeras)
Doom
Sore Throat
Chumbawamba
Napalm Death (1st 2 releases)

and a gizzilion others predated Rage on that front. I would hope that political music has a permanent timeline that did not start and certainly better not stop with any band (or genre - as my list is clearly of limited variety).

Moshing not dancing? Hmmm, nor is the pogo, doce-doe (sp?) or Waltz I suppose? I am not overly concerned about the nature of moshing: it is the inherent contradiction that exists between the messages of the lyrics and the dancing, whoops, moshing.

Of course, matching moshing to the nature of the music (fast, agressive etc) is a far more comfortable fit....but don't RAGM position themselves about their message too?
