Coming up shortly, so i thought i'd get the ball rolling here with who you think should go. I'll start.

Buffy's squad to tour England (provisional)

Daniel Vettori (c)
Brendon McCullum (vc)
Jamie How
Matthew Bell
Ross Taylor
Peter Fulton
Daniel Flynn
BJ Watling
Greg Hay
Gareth Hopkins
Jacob Oram
Jeetan Patel
Kyle Mills
Chris Martin
Tim Southee
Mark Gillespie

16 for the moment, not sure how many are taken but think it's 18 off the top of my head. If so i've left two as i understand both Jesse Ryder and James Franklin are injured right now, but would be in the frame should they be fit again by May.

Three for me, and two for them.

buffon i think its only 14. that was how many sky picked. i would drop hopkins out of that squad you picked as well as one of watling and hay. not sure of hays record this season. would like to see michael mason get in there but i dont see how he can get in there. i really thought he started to turn the corner in the odi's before getting injured

this is what i posted in the little timmy thread but relates to the england tour

the bigger question to come out of today for me and the bigger question to come out of the series is why do new zealand batsmen have an inability to turn 50's into 100's.
Fleming
Taylor, 50s in 3 of the last 4 innings
Bell
McCullum
Vettori gets stranded a bit gut he has a pretty bad conversion rate
How in Hamilton

It doesnt seem to me and ill admit i havent studied closely NZ first class cricket this year but no one consistently gets 100s in 1st class cricket. Flynn seems to have scored a lot of runs this year but is hot and cold. Guptil had a good one day season but i dont think hes done much in 4 day cricket. the otago guys seem to do alright but then again i havent seen much this year

well that was entirely off topic but we could turn this into a squad for england discussion thread

I know I'm a bit out of the loop... but:

Daniel Vettori (c)
Brendon McCullum (vc)
Jamie How
Matthew Bell   (Bugger)
Ross Taylor
Peter Fulton
Daniel Flynn  (Not yet seen him)
BJ Watling   (Not yet heard of him)
Greg Hay   (See above)
Gareth Hopkins   (I hope he's improved a lot in the last six yrs)
Jacob Oram
Jeetan Patel
Kyle Mills
Chris Martin
Tim Southee
Mark Gillespie

Do we have any genuinely quick bowlers in 1st Class in NZ? Maybe not another Bond, but someone consistently hits mid 140's?(and yes, I know Gillespie can get there) or batsmen who can build an innings - not play everything like it's a 20/50 over match?

Are there any likely's that could come out of the 19's? Besides Southee (wish to bugger I coulda seen his innings today!!!)

Here's hoping :)

14 seems a small squad for a full tour of England encompassing first class matches, 3 tests, 5 odi's and a twenty20, oh not to mention 2 odi's against Ireland and Scotland to finish things off. Hay has had a very good record over the past 2 seasons and is a promising young talent, along with Watling. I would of picked Corey Anderson of Canterbury but i feel he is a bit too young yet. I only picked Hopkins as cover for McCullum, otherwise not much use for him i agree.

On the topic of getting a start and not turning it into a big score, it is a problem but one i feel we can overcome. McCullum's problem is he doesn't know how to build a proper test innings. He goes out there as if it's a twenty20 slogathon and whilst i enjoy watching him and like his attitude, he needs to tone it down to a degree in the test match arena. Taylor looks very similar to Fleming doesn't he? But i think he will have one big tour where he makes a couple of centuries and overcomes the problem that Fleming never did. Can't blame Vettori his record for a number 8 is amazing, especially over the last few years.

Three for me, and two for them.

Gezz.  What a shower of a batting lineup.  As Telfer said yesterday:

I think they take a squad of 15, but they'll take additional 3 players for the early stages of the tour while Vetorri, McCullum and co are away for the ICL.

To be honest, I'd hate to be picking this squad - bowling pretty much picks itself (though I'm not sure if I'd take Gillespie), but with the batting, outside How, Taylor and Oram if not injured, I can't see anyone we could take being able to score any runs. I feel it'll be a very frustrating test-series to watch.el grapadura2008-03-26 22:01:59

The young players need to be given the chance though, regardless of how frustration the tour will be. We need to build for the future and this is the best way of doing it.

Of course, I'm just saying that I'll be yelling at the TV a lot.

I'm sure many of us will, but it's important to remember this old adage:

I sense we'll be putting up with tropical rainstorms...such is the life of NZ cricket supporter I guess.

i agree with both buffon and eg which i think is a first with regards to cricket so a good start i guess.
corey anderson is the batsmen they talk about coming out of this u19 team but agree he is still to young, but then he is the same age as southee. maybe he could go over for the odi section. they will pick a different squad for that component. id go with 2 of flynn, watling, hay, todd, broom, elliot, sinclair (i doubt it), guptil. and id pick flynn and watling. probably because i am an nd fan. elliot looked so out of his depth its not funny. not a good enough bowler and i didnt see much of his batting to make up for his average bowling ability.
disagree enitrely with tawa on papps, been given enough shots and isnt good enough.

the ironic thing is i would feel so much better if lou vincent and hamish marshall were available and could go into our middle order.
think about this for a team
how, (tbc), vincent, taylor, marshall, oram, mccullum, vettori, mills, patel/gillespie/southee, martin.

i think thats a good side and would have been very competitive in england

Not sure about Marshall but yes i agree i'd love it if Vincent was still available, but the same goes for Bond. Guess it's time to forget about it and move on.

Yes. Many of the young guys will probably struggle, but it's the only way forward. Looking back, or sticking with the likes of Sinclair is counter-productive.

Also agree on Elliott, looked massively out of his depth in this last test.

What did Elliott actually do to get selected?

He's actually 17, where as Southee is 19.

whatever they do they have to take some young guys and start developing them quick. sticking with sinclair and bell is only going to make us worse. besides that 50 he got in the last innings bell was absolute rubbish, and given that southee clobbered the same attack well im not so excited by it. we are desperately short of top order quality.

in fairness he has scored big runs in domestic cricket this year for an allrounder. and he took wickets against england in the first class game before the test. he did have some form behind him this year

Initial squad is a little bit uncertain as we have 5 of our starters playing in the Indian 20/20 games early on.... so their replacements could be fun.....i reckon our bowliers pick themselves, batsmen an issue, Bell will go sinclair is gone, fulton I doubt it - not the place to find form....Papps hasn't scored a lot of runs this season there are others who have performed better - names escape me right now.

Daniel Vettori (c) - Playing in indian 20/20
Brendon McCullum (vc)- Playing in indian 20/20
Jamie How
Matthew Bell
Ross Taylor - Playing in indian 20/20
Peter Fulton - out of form and sh*te
Papps - outsider but deserves another shot.
Elliot - give him a chance in county cricket. (agreed) - i reckon he'll play a lot for us asa backup for Oram - he's officially a batting allrounder, but struggled a bit.
Jacob Oram - Playing in indian 20/20
Jeetan Patel
Kyle Mills - Playing in indian 20/20
Chris Martin
Tim Southee
Mark Gillespie - crap, and inconsistant - this hurts cos he plays for WGTN
