Carrrrrs...

(said like a Dunedin pirate)

What you got? What do you like? What do you not like? (keep it about the cars, not the numb-nutted bell end that might be driving it)...

I'm about to go through a car change so I've been thinking about what I want, and why, and realising I'm getting more mature lol... I've always liked euros for some reason, (drove a hottish-hatch and feckin hated the suspension on it - and the dickknob exhaust some idiot had put on it) but not sure what my next option will be.

Anyway... over to you...

Drove a Renault meanness RS Sport for a while. Scary fast but a bloody nice car. Very scary cost wise to service ($330 for a spark plug)

Something about Euro cars... interiors piss all over hap car interiors. Even the Monde I drive now is far better than Japan equivalent

Just sold my 2004 Modeo ST220 which was a wonderful thing. I miss her. Currently drive a 1997 Range Rover HSE which is the tow vehicle for my ridiculously heavy old boat.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

First car Ford Cortina Mk3 (coke bottle).

Second "car" Vauxhall Viva.

Currently in between cars.

Last one was a problematic mitsi chariot grandis.

My History

  • Toyota Celica Wagon (1978) in cream
  • Ford Cortina Mark IV (double Webber carbs)
  • Subaru Leone wagon (came second in my one and only car rally in that one)
  • Toyota Celica (1990) 2.2L, 5 speed (stupid fast)
  • Nissan Primera 1.8L - sedan - boring car
  • Nissan Primera 2.5L - wagon - very enjoyable car to drive!

What I would like if money were no object:

  • Aston Martin Vanquish
  • Rolls-Royce - any type, any era.

What I would like, realistically (in a couple of years) - please note family focussed choices:

  • Toyota FJ Cruiser
  • Volkswagen Toureg

Touaregs are awesome. I came within a hair's breadth of buying one when I bought the Range instead.

Ideally I'd want the diesel v10.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Holden Sunbird, followed by a Corolla which is on its last legs, need Gareth Morgan to get me a replacement. Tried a Mitzi Chariot for a couple of months but burnt as much oil as it drank petrol.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

The Mitsi Chariot Grandis was a huge money sink. for me, oil use being just one of the ongoing costs.

Good space and great for transporting kids and footy gear but not really a good cost-benefit result.

The two cars that I had any attachment towards were my Diamondback Apex and then my Speclalized Stumpjumper M2 (modified with heavy Scott Xtrashocks but now back to the original rigids).

My own history is somewhat chequered to be fair... (but there have been a couple of highlights) and probably missing a couple:

  • 75 Mitsi Galant 1850 (the only car I've written off lol)
  • 81 Mitsi Celeste 2L
  • 84 Cortina Sport
  • 88 Telstar Sport
  • 87 Mitsi Starion
  • 88 Honda Prelude
  • 90 Mitsi Magna 2.6*
  • 93 VR Commodore*
  • 96 Ford Fiesta*
  • 01 Pug 206GTi
  • 99 BMW 316* (hey, it was cheap)
  • 03 Mitsi Magna VR* (manual, beast of a car)
  • 01 Mitsi Magna Sport
  • 99 Audi A4 Quattro Avant (for sale if anyone's keen - high km's but cheap and goes great)

And as of a few days ago... (hey, it was time...)

  • 04 Alfa 147 (yes, I know - I looked at a GTi 180 and a Mondeo... this was a good compromise between a fun/drivers car and a semblance of practicality, that FMSQ will drive lol).

Alfa... if they write my car off my watchlist has a 156 Sportwagon on it.

A mate of mine had one of those - which is why I considered the 147, bluddy fun wee thing to drive... by no means the fastest thing around but fast enough, all the mod cons, a wee bit of style and they want you to drive them, not just steer (you know it makes sense lol).

I have a boring Suby but I'm a car geek...

Currently into boxy 80s & 90s cars and sleepers...BMW e30, 333, Alfa SZ, volvo 850 t5r etc, 1st gen Ford Taurus SHO, 2003 Mazdaspeed6, Nissan R30 gtr, Suburu b22, Peugeot 405 T16 etc

I like tautologies because I like them.

I'd love a 405 M16.  Used to pop into Continental in Auckland and there was always a row of them parked next to the Ferrari/Peugeot building.  All the Ferrari mechanics had 405s and whenever they traded one someone on the staff would buy it before they ever got to sell it.

Engine slips into the 205 GTi bay perfectly as well for an extra 30 bhp on the standard Euro 1.9. More likely to find a spare in a BX though.

The Hawkes Bay Fever Bus is still going strong.

1999 Holden (Opel) Vectra 2.2L GL which recently ticked over 201,000km. Feels like a tank, drives like a tank but it owes me nothing

Current daily driver is a 2006 Holden Commodore SS-V and weekend car is 2002 Holden Monaro in Devil Yellow. This is mainly used for travelling from Palmy to Wellington for Phoenix games.

mmmm. Does look nice.  Had a look at the Ford Fiesta a few years back (2010 I think?) - new model had just come out then with a supposedly very fuel efficient engine.

Had similar curves which was slightly reminiscent of the Cortina Mk 3 so was very tempted.  Until I saw the price tag ($27k or thereabouts).

We get ripped off with new car prices, more so when compared to our mates on the West Island.

This new Bentley Coupe is beautiful from the front but the back looks like they just gave up and thought "Let's just do what Aston Martin do".

Pretty much thought that when I first saw it by the way and not plagiarizing the geniuses at Stuff.co.nz

Currently on my 3rd BMW 3-Series. Will more than likely stay with that trend. I average about 4 years between cars before I fancy something else.
