Coffee prices - post GST rise.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

The raw prices complaint in the artlcle got me going...

Coffee is an interesting commodity. The growers get paid **** all and the rest of the industry makes a shed load off of it. Have alook at this film if you get the chance - Black Gold.
Opeons you eyes a bit to the state of the business....  Here are the latest prices from the Indian board - http://www.indiacoffee.org/indiacoffee.php?page=MarketInfo

the GROWERS get about US5cents a lb.

The whole thing is effectively a licence to rip everyone off. Well done National, another piece of genius.

What's that you say? The tax cut will cover it? Hahhahahahahaha...good try, you nearly had me there.

Couplands bakery has put most things up 5c, but they round down, effectively making it the same price if you buy the one item.

Pub prices are getting silly, I ordered a double whiskey after getting stranded in the rain just to get my nervous system working and it was around $9. I reckon half a glass of wine is around the same price. This is was in a pub outside of wellington.

Also agreed tea is the drink. Also started drinking green tea the Healtheries one with a twist of lemon - Very addictive.

What's all this tea sh*t? Do your parents not let you drink coffee? Coffee is the fuel of champions. And insomniacs.

I had a pint of Summit in Albany just before and it was only $5.50. Not happy hour either. I was well chuffed.

$8 for what isn't even truly a 'pint' of beer severely pisses me off.

To be fair,a lot if pubs wouldve held off putting prices up after tax on alcohol, but the gst rise kind of forced the hand. Targets to meet and all that.

Is what happened at my work.

But yeah places like the post office putting prices up 20% then blaming it on gst is surely some sort of false advertising, being as they say "because of gst and other things" when really it's mainly the other things and gst only being a very small part of the 20% riseTegal2010-10-03 00:07:03

You dont even have to go that far back

When I arrived in NZ in 2003, you paid on average $5.5 for a pint in a city pub, you now pay on average $8.50 - roughly 60% increase in 7 years

I'm not looking forward to the shock of paying 3 quid and over for a pint on my upcoming trip to the UK - I remember balking at the price when my local started charging 2 quid for a pint of Guinness!

Not too far off the mark actually.

Remember going to Reefton and there were maybe 4+ pubs.

Then on to Hokitika where you stumbled less than 100m from one pub to the next.

Did like Lake Ianthe Tavern tho.

Thing is though, 3 quid a pint is cheap compared to $8 here for a pretend pint that is not even 568ml.

Right enough, I think the last time I was back in the UK, 4 years ago, it was about 35p to the NZ$, now it's about 47p, Means back then $8 here would have been about 2.60 GBP, now it's almost 3.6 GBP

Good luck trying to get a pint for 3 (unless you are in some god forsaken part of scotland where it will still be about 1.50 but it will be Tennants or some other sh*t beer brewed through a tramps socks)

alcohol prices have risen at a fair price, if you take into account the 2 excise tax increases since July 09 (that most bars absorbed due to the recession) its closer to 10% increase in wholesale value - plus the brewery's usually jack the price even more crying about transport costs.

The average cost of a pint in the UK is 2.45 pounds but the closer you get to London the higher the price.
They reckon Scotland is more expebsive.

Onto coffee i've noticed Robert Harris in Lower Hutt and one little tin box in Ngaio are charging $5 for a coffee. Not even what i'd class as a "large". I'm starting to get fairly picky about where I go now.
