Surreal scenario: AFL has announced season suspension, yet Perth's West Coast Eagles are still kicking off v Melbourne Demons in Perth this afternoon.

Peter V'landys (ARL commissioner) apparently looking to play on ... "unless they are forced to". LOL.

James Johnson's presser must be due to be announced anytime now.

A-League set to continue?

Although with the closing down of state borders and interstate travel, could basically mean an end to that. Unless all teams relocate to NSW to complete the season. Will continue to be a shark-show otherwise.

I guess the reason for pushing on could be the precarious state of the league & it's future? The NRL is already on record as saying it'll go bust if the season is suspended or canned. I guess if the NRL is placed more financially delicately than I would've thought, then perhaps the A-League could be sitting on the financial precipice?

Not sure the NRL would actually go bust, but some clubs basically could. Yes, I also thought NRL would be more financially healthy than is. Apparently last year they got declined for a bank loan for something they wanted to do. ARL apparently better off financially.

It's why Peter V'landys got the job. He's the money man in NSW.

Recent article over financial mismanagement in the NRL.

The code/competition is a lot closer to the brink than it should have ever been.

Would imagine with the broadcasting deals being worth several hundred million/a few billion dollars (I don't know exact figures) this would dwarf what the FFA/A-League would manage to bring in for it's broadcast deals, basically the life blood of any sporting code worth it's salt these days. It's horrible to even suggest, but the A-League is nowhere near as big as the NRL or AFL in terms of profile and monetary value. If this goes on for too much longer, which increasingly looks like it will, it's not impossible to think we (either as specific clubs, or the league in totality) could come face to face with financial troubles in the very near future.

That is like saying Liverpool have won the EPL. I don't think so.

NRL saying they will continue on as long as health authorities are still ok with it.

Permalink Permalink

Talking of stupidity, what about the reports of Courtney place bars and restaurants doing good business on Saturday night. How dumb are people? It’s people like that who force the Govt into more draconian measures. Things are moving fast. NZ will be at stage 3 in a few days and probably stage 4 and complete shutdown quickly after that. I think they are doing a good job balancing health with not causing panic and completely crashing the economy. But the inevitable is close. Everyone should be avoiding social contact already and planning for lockdown.

Lets just hope if that is the season over the closure dosnt lead into next season. Also that they have got even closer in lockdown and all decide they still have a job to do and All sign back on.

NRL think they can be exempt from the new state border measures as they are going in on a charter plane on day of match, going straight to ground and then leaving without any contact with anyone else.

Estimate is that if it was to stop now could lose about 6 clubs.

Just love how they think they deserve special treatment. Not sure why charter planes should be okay

unfortunately you often cant control stupid!

90% of the population will do as instructed, 5% will think they know better and post about it on social media or bemoan the government not doing enough or too much in the media. The last 5% are just plain stupid, they wont understand the severity of what is happening nor will they care.

Be smart, listen to what the government and experts are saying, look after yourselves and family.

Hospitality workers are not asking people who put address as a Backpaker/hotel how long they have been in the country before allowing the into pub/cafe etc.

At the pub the other night 4 french tourists came in - we regulars looked at each other with one tjhoght how lang had the been here or should they be in isolation.

One regular runs a 160 room boarding house (communal facilities) - Won't take any one who can not prove they have been in NZ for 4 weeks now.  He has new arrivals ringing  thinking they can self isolate in a hostel style place.

Sadly we are going to get a massive spike and all due to stupidity and lax enforcement. I'm aware of someone who came from overseas and they were told nothing at the border. Yes they did skf isolate as they arnt dickheads.

Police should be there alongside them.  Forcibly quarantine and deport.

best bit of advice I heard on Saturday from scientist Michelle Dickinson aka Nano Girl is to behave in public and at home as if you have the virus. That way you are being considerate to others and protecting yourself.

12.30 23/3/20: Stuff

"That was the highest one-day rise in the number of Covid-19 patients to date.

There was now a focus on the two cases of possible community transmission announced on Saturday, and a cattle fair in Queenstown where at least four people were infected with the disease."

Once we get community transfer (if confirmed, word is possible foreign carrier)  it will be NZ shut down.

EDIT 13.30  "Four people infected with coronavirus went on bus trips to two Central Otago stations and attended the Wanaka A&P Show.

Two Kiwis, an Australian and a Uruguayan, who tested positive for coronavirus, attended the World Hereford Conference in Queenstown from March 9 to 13.

NZ Herefords president Colin Corney said more than 300 people attended the conference from across North and South America, Europe, Scandinavia, UK and Ireland, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand."

pretty sure community transmission is happening now do not wait to be told, the amount of people that have been tested is no where near enough and the more that get tested the more cases they will find.with all the people flouting the self quarantine that are being caught there will also many others that have not been caught.if you can self isolate then you should do so. everything starting to close in wanganui council buildings, libraries, art galleries, information center some cafes and restaurants and that is just at a quick glance at the chronicle when i got home from work sure there will be more announced vey soon.

Work luckily. We had a fire drill the other day which meant everyone sharing stair wells in close proximity to each other, although I'm sure the risk of exposure is low.
