Back in December, my wife and I bought a new house, a do-up as usual. It really was a mess, but had heaps of potential, with views all the way from west Ak to the city, Rangitoto, Great Barrier and even Coromandel. But I digress, the house was a tip.
Anyway one of the things that required immediate attention was a double garage attached to the house that had never been finished. It was not enclosed, so was more a double carport than garage, but the original intention had been to build it as a garage. The timber on the inside was rotten, as it hadn't been treated, and as such it could have fallen at any time. I've got a classic car that owes me thousands, so there was no way the car was going under the garage; it had to come down.
Checking the LIM report before purchase, it showed that although the building was unpermitted, the Waitakere Council were aware of it and had even sent the vendor a letter some five years previous stating that it had to be brought up to standard or taken down. Nothing had been done, so I negotiated a sum off the purchase price with this in mind.
After being in the house a week or so I rang the council to tell them that I was planning on taking the garage down, and could they please remove all correspondence relating to the structure from the property file. The stooge on the end of the line informed me that I would need to get a permit for the removal of the garage, and that this would cost $1046.00! To get a permit to remove something that didn't have a permit!
Anyhow, I hadn't told him the address or anything, so I promptly hung up and got a contractor in to take it down; no permit.
Now I'm applying for building consent to put up a replacement. If the existence of the garage comes up I'm just going to deny that it it was there when I moved in. "Previous owner must have got rid."
Who do they think they are? As if anyone should have to pay them money to remove a structure they had already said had to be removed! Unbelievable.

Yeah, but couldn't they have just said, "Ok, pull it down". Why try to squeeze more money out of us?  I mean, the permits for a double carport (I've decided I can do without a full garage) are going to cost us approx $2500 as it is, and that for a structure that will only cost about $5000 itself. Ridiculous.

I remember some guy in Auckland a few months back had a run in with the local council and a similar thing, it was going to cost him more to get permission to remove some trees that really did need pulling down (They showed them on TV) than the resultant fine the council said they would give him if he just did it, so he told them to go fornicate themselves and had the trees removed, they duely handed him a fine and he paid on the spot in cash!! He saved a bundle on their bullsh*t fees.

If it's on your property, it's your affair what you do with it, not the bloody councils. Regarding the building codes, if it is safe and not within 6 feet of your fenceline, who cares?? Unless you're adding another level to your house.

That's kind of how look at it too LG, and why I was so flabbergasted when they told me about having to pay them for a permit to take it down.
Our section is about 1200 sqm. At the back it drops away steeply into gully, and there is now a concrete path through the gully that weaves down to the bottom of our section. Bloody hard work it was but worth the effort in the end.
Anyhow, to further improve it I thought of decking part of the back leading up to the new path. However, i've decided against it, beacuse at least two of the poles for the deck will have to go in at about 1.2 metres above ground level to make it work, and I just can't be effed dealing with the money-grabbing buffoons that masquerade as our Council (decks less than 1m off the ground don't need a permit). Shame, it would be really quite nice, but I really can't be arsed. And the fact is we are only going to be here another 4 years tops, so it's probably not worth the expense in terms of value it might add.

Not worth temporarily filling the ground around the pole spots by 20cm so it's only a metre ?

I've thought of all that HN but I've lost all enthusiasm for the idea. Funnily enough, the enthusiasm waned immediately after the words Waitakere City Council popped into my head.
Of more concern right now is getting a fence across the steeper part of the drop. We are having a baby (scheduled for late December) and the area could be quite treacherous for a toddler. So, given that I expect to be a walking zombie after December for a year or so through sleep deprivation I'd like to get it done before then. So that's become the priority.
