I tried the cask wine approach for a few months as a student but the hangovers were way too brutal I found

Especially when there was kristov with a sachet of raspberry raro to be drunk, or kentucky gold. Good times.

My phone tried to change kentucky to Kent Uckfield. Who the fudge is Kent Uckfield?

Ah Kristov, one of New Zealand's finest inventions. To bring this conversation full circle, was that an Independent Liquor creation just like Ranfurly?

As for Kent Uckfield, I think that's the sound you made as you threw up Kentucky Gold?

I thought kristov was from fonterra, alcohol being a byproduct of milk production.

Genuine question - $45 for a 3 hour session and you have to pay for your beers on top of that - is it really worth it?

Absolutely - 100% especially the Friday, 11am session.

If anyone is looking for a decent price on some GREAT beer, try the cellar door at Baylands Brewery in Petone.

Great, great beer (personal favourite is "Red 5 Standing By").

1.25l bottles, fresh from the tap are between $11 and $15.50.

I went a few years ago with very low expectations, but had a brilliant time. Went on the Saturday night session and there was a great atmosphere, loads of really cool beers to try and general, all round fun. The only thing I would suggest is to drink all your tokens before they close the bars, as it is very difficult to change them back into cash. From memory they closed the bars 15 minutes early and between us we had about $120 worth of tokens (it was all a lot cheaper than what we expected), which they weren't going to change back to cash. It took a few versions of "We're not gonna take it" and "Fudge the police" (although I am pretty sure was on my own with that one) before they relented and gave us our money. Fun times.

Plenty of brilliant stuff at Beervana, pity most of it will never make it to the shelves. In particular, enjoyed the below beers.

  • Baylands Brewery Van da Tzar
  • Garage Project Cookies and Cream
  • Kereru Imperial Nibs
  • Funk Estate Stacking Cash West Cost IPA
  • Barley's Breakfast Stout
  • Little Creatures Return of the Dead

Also, anything by Behemoth and Beer Baroness is really good right now

Baylands have their Van Da Tzar on tap at the brewery, very nice, but not sure i could go a whole rigger of it in one go BUT they did say they had plans to put it into bottles, just working on the labels

Gets bottled Monday - great beer and the winner at Beervana. But you're right, if you buy a rigger, it better be for sharing as it's a strong beast.

Hunt down a Panhead Triple Eye. Lordy!

Everything an Armageddon and a Hop Zombie is, but on steroids.

Super over hopped and 13% trappist tripel style IPA.

BOOM.

Yep. It was a bit like a more wattery guiness, more of a cola flavour to it though.

was wandering home from Angel tonight, and stopped in a pub that I hadn't been in a few years. It has Tuatara Double Trouble in bottles. They were £11 a bottle (which is over twice as much as every other beer that they had in there) but it was good

Founders was always decent but quality has suffered since it was sold to Boundary Rd (in turn owned by Asahi).

There are some excellent Garage Project beers out at the moment (Los Lobos, Dirty Boots, Nerissimo, Golden Brown) and Baylands Brewery go from strength to strength.

Didn't know that about Founders, are they still based in the historic park in Nelson?

Not sure, generally they keep those locations to stay 'legit'. There are few that can maintain quality once a big brewery gets involved - Black Dog seem to be doing ok with the beers in their brewbars and Emerson's has maintained consistency but remember that Mac's was an independent craft brewery once and look at the rubbish they pump out now.
