Spoiler alert, it doesn't. Top tip however - try watching it on EPO. Improves things dramatically.

Is there anything more demoralising than going to get on the bike and finding a flat tire?  Had to swap tubes in the bike sheds at work before riding home, killing off my plan to do an Evans Bay and back loop before heading to the Hutt.

Now I have to hunt for a puncture in the tube and it's just a pain.

Agreed. But I think getting a puncture at any time is the worst. In fact I think it's the worst thing about cycling... even worse than motorists like Michael.

Puncture advice I've found useful

You get used to them, (punctures), I now tend to pay a bit more for bomb proof tires made by Schawlbe or my fav company Continental. Tires like Top Contacts, Gator Skins, Armadillos, or the amazing Black chillies. Schawlbe do Marathon pluses but they are a bastard to mount.  Avoid Kenda.

I usually take about 10-15mins to get a tube changed and always take x2 spares, they idea is to check to make sure you taken out whatever caused the flat.

Pinch punctures are caused by low inflation and can be spotted as the tube usually has  x2 slits opposite each other. It;s where the tube gets pinched by the rim. When you've fixed your flat check that no part of the tube is sticking out. I've changed gazzillions of tires but still make this mistake now and again when I've been in a rush.

Keep your inflation up to max recommended, or around 5psi below especially with road tires. I found with MBT's it depends on where you are riding, but too inflated make bike go boing boing, which can effect handling and safety.

Also particularly on bigger tires anything over say700cx 28 or 26" to 29"  go over them every month of so and dig out the glass with a knife that are burrowing towards the tube.

I normally ditch a tire if I get repeat flats.

Presta Valves  get a decent pump and be cool, it is so easy to snap the little lock off when you are p*ssed off with getting a flat or rushing - take it easy

The dreaded Bump or Bobble - This happens sometimes with tight tires and slightly big rims meet, when you cycle you can feel a bump or bulge every revolution, this can lead to a spectacular blow out but also just messes with your cadence and feels terrible. It normally occurs near the valve but can be a little further along.

Luckily the late great Sheldon Brown has advice - If you get a bump or bobble around the valve or it's tough getting the tire mounted you can try windowlene glass cleaner and spray that on the rim. Or over inflate by 5psi, if you hear a slight pop that means the tube has inflated and is now  sitting properly. Don't over inflate by anymore or you'll blow the tube.

If that don't get rid of the bobble push the valve up when the tire and tube are mounted that pushes the tube up in the right place - best bit of puncture advice I ever found this on mounting tricky tires, Sheldon bless you.

His whole defence is basically "I didn't actually hit anyone" ... well he should try riding on a bike when a truck skims that close to you. Actual contact doesn't matter. Plonker. Hope they throw the book at him.

Yeah weak defense, I mean if a bloke said "I ran around firing a crossbow on a busy road, but didn't  aim the bow specifically at drivers, passengers or cyclists therefore I'm innocent" I think at the time he would have had an armed police response unit waving guns at him.

It's the mentally that once you are in your car you are above the law that is common with drivers.

I'm pleased there is overwhelming evidence against him.

I just don't see a heavy sentence. I reckon, (sadly), a 2 year suspended sentence and some some sort of community work.

I haven't been able to exercise for a month, and have spent the majority of that time getting drunk on my couch, so any cyclists want to crash into me they better get a decent amount of speed up unless they want to come off second best.

For those who haven't seen my other post that FT is referring to, here it is....

I am sure there used to be a cyclists thread on here, where all the people who cycled to work occasionally would bitch about cars not respecting them, or whatever.  Problem is, I cannot find it.  So I am going to use this thread to say that 4 times in the last 6 weeks or so I have been crossing at the corner of Boulcott and Willis Streets in the morning, and had to step out of the way of a cyclist going through a red light.  I hope all of these cunts get hit by a speeding steamroller.

tbf Frankie, I cycle through that intersection and if I spotted you I'd crash the red to try and clip you.

Although as I just turn left into Boulcott off Willis it's probably not the bit you are crossing.

that is the bit I cross - from that shitty old hotel to the shitty body builder place.  If it is any consolation, if I saw you standing on your bike at the red light, I would kick you off.

Problem with crossing there is that there is two lanes of traffic, so you step out from behind a van or something and the bikes are moving quite quick as they haven't seen you.  If I had quicker reactions I would kick them off as they went past but I just have to limit myself to yelling (sometimes quite loud as I have my earphones in listening to some trendy music) "fucking red light you cunt", which I immediately feel embarrassed about.

fuck that noise - cyclists are pricks around here.  Told one to get the fuck off the footpath the other day as it seems that cycling along footpaths is considered acceptable around here (along with running red lights, wearing lycra when old and out of shape, and generally not bothering with any of the standard road rules).

Exactly the reason we need some proper cycle lanes. If the option is between getting mowed down by a car/bus/truck or taking a footpath some choose the footpath. Which is wrong (and I don't do it) but if you got some decent cycle lanes I'm sure they wouldn't do it anyway.
P.S. A a cyclist I don't do any of the other stuff you mentioned either (other than lycra sometimes... but that's just for kicks...)

well, the option is actually between following the road code and being a cunt.

I have just decided I have about as much patience and tolerance for the issues facing cyclists as I do for the issues facing people who nonce up kids or support Chelsea.

it's pretty simple dairy - and it is probably only a few nutters who cause the issues - same as the few bad car owners out there.

Cyclists appear to ignore red lights, yet complain if a car hits them or comes close during this event, they regularly ride 3 or more abreast and again complain when a car or truck comes too close.....the list goes on. It comes down to being incosiderate on the road space available.

I have no idea who mr wellingtonbikecam is, but I am tempted drive round in my car until I find him, and then run him over. And then ask a bus driver to not respect him, and then run over him again. And then run over him again.
