I personally think this could be a logistical & infrastructure embarrassment. Have they revealed where the 2014 Com Games are going to be held?

Why do they even bother anymore, Half of the commonwealth countries are suspened or have nothing to do with "Mother England" anymore. Lonegunmen2010-09-14 20:03:14

Am only aware of 2 being suspended. Out of over 50, is not half?

They did it for the winter olympics too. How many practices do they need?

Three for me, and two for them.

Delhi Games village 'unfit for athletes'

More strife for the games, can potentially see us and some teams bailing out of it eh? essentially 1 week to clean the athletes village..

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Does that mean the 5 sports channels will then be used for football instead

Allegedly

Now with the collapse of the footbridge leading to the main stadium I can see this event being on Saturday morning's Newstalk ZB Cancellations. "...all junior rugby grade games - cancelled, Dehli 2010 Commonwealth Games - cancelled...".

Shouldn't have been awarded to Dehli in the first place.

Shouldn't some kind of Games committee checked all the venues about 6 months ago to see how everything was tracking instead of a week out?

I think they did (may not have been 6 months but it was a decent while back) and the checkers we're told by the organising committee that everything would be done in time. from my recollection.

what an embarrassment.

end of the commonwealth games for good?

Hopefully it will be left up to the athletes to asses the risks so it doesn't get political...

Australia say India should not host Commonwealth Games

I don't get why people don't like this event. Sure, it isn't the Olympics and most of the countries do not have strong links to Britain. The reason why I watch it is for sport. I think most sports fans would watch it, soccer fans might not be so interested.

I don't see why everyone is wanting Delhi to fail at hosting it too. They are a developing country and are trying to improve their standard of living, a successful games would help to bring them further into the developed world.

Interesting take - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/commonwealthgames/8023911/Commonwealth-Games-2010-fear-of-criticising-India-has-led-to-current-chaos.html

This is what he said: ''The Village will be fantastic. We will begin working there today and, once the final security lockdown is complete, we will begin living there from the weekend onwards. The accommodation for England is looking good and yesterday they began the final deep-clean'', he said.

Less than 100 hours later and the situation was so dire delegations around the world were delaying arrivals. Everyone has seen the pictures of squalor and filth and piles of rubble and exposed wiring and dodgy plumbing.

<!-- BEFORE ACI -->
And the blame game is being being played out around the world as the athletes finally start to arrive.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

There are worst places you could hold an international sporting event. For example, Stadium Southland.

For me, it's more about the arbitrary qualification criteria than anything else. How valid is a gold medal win in field hockey when competitive nations like Germany and the Netherlands aren't allowed to compete? Sure, the winning team is #1 in the Commonwealth, but who cares about that? I'll be watching some events but on the whole, the tournament means very little. Only real exception is Netball - the only nations who play it are Commonwealth members, but the idea of there being any competition in the sport is laughable regardless.

There's a difference between wanting something to fail, and criticizing something for failing. Sometimes it's hard to tell them apart though. I myself am critical of how India have failed in organizing it, but I strongly supported their right to host it. If done correct, this could have been a fantastic tournament. It'll take a hell of a lot for India to salvage it however, though I hope they do.

Does the same measure apply for tournaments like the upcoming Euro 2012 which, while involving some quality teams, misses traditional powerhouses of football such as Argentina, New Zealand, Brazil and various other teams which aren't as good as the aforementioned 3 but quality nonetheless (Japan, Australia, Cote d'Ivoire etc)?

To a degree, yes. I put more value in winning the World Cup than winning Euro. And I'd imagine most Spaniards would agree that 2010 was a better year for them than 2008. The scale is bigger, the achievement has more value.

That being said, the criterion for entering Euro 2012 is far less arbitrary than the criterion for entering Delhi 2010 (in my personal opinion). Regional tournaments make sense and have value, rather than tournaments based on membership of a sociopolitical group with a partially-applied historical basis.

That being said, I'll still be watching and will enjoy it for what it is.
