Does Chch have a problem?
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Yet ANOTHER instance of racist abuse in Chch. Interesting how each instance gets reported in isolation.

Funnily enough, the first time I visited NZ (about 15 years ago) I was told that there was a big racism problem in Christchurch. Having never lived there, I couldn't comment on whether that's the case or not.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

There's a certain element that gives it a really bad rep, but I don't think it's as endemic as it seems.

That kind of sh!t makes me cringe though.

I went to the South Island once. It was the whitest place I've ever been to. The dairy owners are white, the fish and chip shop owners are white...it was like the freakin' Twilight Zone!

Well, yes.

But that still doesn't explain the lack of "Patel's Dairys" or "Papadopoulos' Fish and Chips".

...interesting that The Press doesn't seem to think so. You know if as Kiwi got attacked in say, London or New York, we'd get wall to wall on the racism problem in either city's nation.

Mmm... maybe when it's this close to home some institutions DUCK the issue?

It's that Nor'wester that they get down there. It turns them all frikkin loopy.

But a good comparison is to compare the Auckland and Canterbury rugby teams.

That's an unfair comparison, Auckland is a lot closer to Samoa, Fiji, Tonga etc...

I think you must be thinking of Iceland or something.  All of the dairies and fish and ship shops are owned by foreigners down here (and that isn't a bad thing, just pointing it out).

Too right.  People focus on racism by whites and how the British and Americans had slaves etc.  They conveniently forget the Egyptians enslaved the Jews and some other African groups enslaved whites.

Which in the Christchurch context means what exactly? Should we tell the woman , mentioned in the OP, that "tough there's racism in every culture"?

Lads am born and bred in Canterbury (and no...my mum is not a Merino) and there is definately a racism problem. There is also an incredibly unique make up...as in the asian population far out weighs the maori and islander population. Most of the racism is direct towards the asian population (it starts with the driving jokes)

Add to this the fact that Christchurch has a very large "old boys" network running it fuels the problem even more as most of these "old boys" are old white men. Too top it off when people in CHCH booze they're more agressive than HN trying to find a donut. I used to feel safe as in town down south but now whenever I go back you can see people looking for fights. Well average. Would not move "home" again in a hurry, especially with the nix around!

No and i'm not condoning what these people did, but, that sort of stuff happens quite a lot all over the place, i'm sorry she was verbally abused the way she was but she wasn't beaten to a pulp as can happen in other instances of racially motivated attacks.

So you have to be beaten to pulp before it matters?

And of course, if someone did get beaten to a pulp, there'd be someone to say 'well, at least they weren't lynched like it happens in other places'.

No, i'm just saying it happens,it just doesn't get reported everyday.

Ofcourse what happened is wrong but as giddyup mentioned, theres racism absolutely everywhere, in every country of the world.  I most certainly think what happened was awful but i'd bet it happens a lot in the north island as well.  Racism is global.  So people should focus on eliminating it in their backyards before pointing out problems with racism elsewhere (unless ofcourse the racism elsewhere is that much worse than their own, but I know for a fact the difference between North and South Island isn't that much).

Without disagreeing with the 'there's racism everywhere' viewpoint, if that is the case why does Christchurch have such a reputation for racism then? Why is Christchurch singled out? I've never heard anyone saying "Oh yeah, Te Awamutu's a really racist town" or "Napier? Full of skinheads"l.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Back to Chch, I've been there once and I loved the city, but as soon as I mentioned to anyone that I was from Auckland (which I quickly learned not to do) the conversation ground to a halt. One guy in Borders - a staff member) was chatting away with me about football (I was buying a copy of British Football Week) and when I mentioned where I was from his whole tone changed. Petty in the extreme.
Also, my wife has a cousin who lives in Chch after spending most of her life in Auckland. She has said that she generally won't mention to people she doesn't know well where she is from as they can "react in a bad way" (her words).
Rascism? Placism? I dunno, but it is unnecessary and does them no favours with regard to what the rest of the country thinks of them.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

The narrow minded petty parochial views of Canterbury/Christchurch are best seen with the debate surrounding Wylie/Hart and Deans/Henry. Village of the Dammed i say!

The Jam is right,

I changed schools this year from a lower class school to private education. Once people know you are from that other school they change towards you. I hate Christchurch for it.

Some of us Chongs (NZ born Chong I might add) are card-carrying YF supporters .  I guess I don't need a Yella Feeva t-shirt (but I got one anyway).

Btw, I would boo at Lei Lei Gao if he turned up against the Nix.

A sign I saw just outside Christchurch once read:

"Say no to goats"

Which is fine (if a little random) on its own.  The thing is that underneath goats someone had spray painted:

"...and niggaz"

And under THAT someone else had spray painted:

"...and chinks"

And THAT sums Christchurch up fairly well I think.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Not defending that, but a sign like that is inviting tagging of that nature and would probably get the same in Wellington, Hamilton, or Auckland. loyalgunner2008-12-19 19:00:20

Is chch worse than anywhere else in this country? I live in ChcH, there is a lot of violence and crime - you just need to be in town on a friday night to see that  alot fuelled by booze.  But remember it only takes a few to ruin for the rest.
A body found in teh Avon yesterday of a prostitute, a taxi driver murdered here a couple of weeks ago  - their are some evil people out there - look after each other this xmas time guys.

I think you are right I'm sad to say.
I was in Welly last weekend and I noticed alot of friendliness and tolerence  (apart from the jerk who asked me the result of the nix game as he walked past and when I tld him his response was - C%#ts - ( had my son with me so was real impressed)).

In Chch there are alot of people with attitude looking for trouble.
I don't know why..... or what the solution is
