The engineer reports came back all good. Only some very minor damage that will be fixed shortly.
Well thats a tad disappointing. I was looking forward to a nice rectangular stadium being built in its place, even if it did cost us the World Cup game.
I think we all were!

So what you are saying is it needs someont with a run away Bulldozer to hit the stadium?

Home last night after a 10 day, quake avoiding holiday and the only damage......? Little Nixie took a header off my bookshelf.

Either that or he was trying to escape!

I'm still here in Upper Hutt, and seems most people in Welly are ok as well. Certainly was a decent shake though!!

Fuck this stupid day.

Did not enjoy this afternoon at all. Funny how these things affect you as I haven't been scared in an earthquake before now but was quite rattled after today's one. I guess once they get under your skin all the aftershocks are just that much more unpleasant.

Heaven knows I'm miserable now

Felt the biggie again here in Napier.

Our warehouse got a good old fashioned rattle. To be honest I made a B-Line for the open roller door when I worked out what was happening!

Glad to hear that everyone is ok, if a little shaken! (Pun Intended!)

Sod this for a game of soldiers.

There were some quite upset people at work and I was shaking a wee bit after the first one.

I decided to leave for home after the first one.  Surprisingly no broken glass on the streets unlike last time. On my way to the bus stop there was some twunty parking warden twunt marking car tyres. Twunt.

Got home just as primary school was finishing, but Jnr Jnr was stuck across town (secondary school) and had to wait for ages to get a bus back to K-Town.  I tried to go and pick him up but gave up when I got to the Terrace as it was gridlock-city.

I walked home after the first one, from railway station to island bay - took me about an hour......too many people crammed on busses and grid locked city made it impossible to get anywhere.

Hang-glider the way to go. Just need to plan the approach right. And make sure to avoid the props on the wind turbine.

Finished work at 5pm, walked outside and jumped into my car and drove home with very few delays (I did get one red light which pissed me off slightly!)

Not sure what everyone is complaining about!!!

My sympathy to Wellingtonians and Marlboroughites after your recent shakes from down here in Christchurch!

Hope the Westpac Stadium is free of major damage for the sake of the All Whites play-off and the Phoenix season.

Contrary to some sketchy media reports, it seems no actual engineering assessment of the structure has been carried out yet.

At most, only a superficial visual inspection has taken place and that really has no relevance to assessing the stadium's safety.

Your quakes have not been anywhere near as big as ours in Christchurch, so it'll probably be okay - but there's no guarantee...

Experience in Christchurch is that a lot of significant structural damage is not visible to a cursory inspection.

I saw the AMI Stadium in Christchurch a day after the Feb. 22 quake and not much damage was visible to the stands -yet they sustained major structural damage and it's not economic to repair them.

This on the Westpac Stadium website: http://westpacstadium.co.nz/update-following-earthquake-of-16-august-2013

"Engineering assessments on the building itself are being carried out on Monday 19th August.  The Stadium building will remain closed until these have been completed."

The stadium is built on unstable land but you have the advantage over Christchurch that your stadium was built with earthquakes in mind as a real possibility, whereas AMI Stadium here was plonked on liquifaction-prone land with few precautions taken.

From the website of BECA the engineering company who were project managers for Westpac Stadium:

http://www.beca.com/projects/buildings/sports_facilities/westpac_stadium.aspx#.UhCgp5I3CSo

"[In building Westpac Stadium] inherent challenges included a site on a narrow strip of re-claimed land close to a major earthquake fault line. This required four months of preparation with vibro-compactors to prevent liquefaction during an earthquake."

Not sure if I posted way back, but back in the day when I was a student at Canterbury, there was reasonable media coverage of liquefaction and the risk it posed to Christchurch.

This was sometime in the mid 80s to mid 90s (exact date is a bit of a blur as is much that happened in those scarfy years).

my office was closed today, and it has been confirmed that it will also be closed tomorrow - not because of any specific damage but because an engineering assessment has not been completed.  Anyone want to get drunk with me and stay up all night waiting for the Man City vs Newcastle game?
