CNN zoomed into Australia to show where New Zealand is this morning. No wonder Americans are geographically challenged.

Funny you say that. Been watching the Earthquake news on TV1 this morning - they break to an ad for Godfreys of Christchurch, advertising their big vacuum cleaner sale this weekend.Well whoop-de-do, our house has been torn down by an earthquake, but let's take our mind off it by going vacuum cleaner shopping. On second thought, it could be quite timely with the big clean-up...

those ads have been bought and paid for, therefore tv stations are obligated to screen them regardless.

True and Radio NZ has been paid for as well by tax payers, so no  need for commercials which is excellent.

The answer to life's problems are rarely found at the bottom of a beer glass - but it's always worth a look.

If I were a news reporter I would have gone to Darfield and said something like this:

"I'm live here in Darfield, at the epicentre of the earthquake and there is absolutely nothing here...so everything is pretty much as per usual here."

There was a great interview with the owner of the pub/hotel in Darfield on National Radio at about breakfast time. "We're all fine, we had some damaged pipes but there's a plumber staying here so he fixed it pretty quickly and now everyone is in the bar drinking and having a good time."

I loved the CNN lady making it sound horrific "rescuers are looking for possible survivors", then when she spoke to the TVNZ reporter he said "no, we don't think that there is anyone trapped in the rubble. The earthquake was twelve hours ago and things like the power are coming back on" The CNN lady looked totally crestfallen, their newsroom must have figured something like "big earthquake in far-away country, there must be hundreds dead!"

They should just go fishing for bodies in the Avon and make it look like there were casualties.

Three for me, and two for them.

Lying in bed last night the bed was continually moving from very small quakes - quite disconcerting.  Had a fair size one 10 minutes ago but still nothing on the main one yesterday.

Bring on the Nix.

Afternoon all. Just got power 10 minutes ago. 34hours without power. Geez, the shake was crazy. Woke up and hide under my covers.

We've been slaughtered with aftershocks. Rattling the house back and fourth. No damage for us at either of our houses.

Back in time for the phoenix this evening :)

Funny timing that Jim Anderton said in an interview on Friday that it "It'd take an earthquake" to lose the election to Bob Parker.

One dead, apparently.  From a heart attack assumedly linked to the earthquake.  Hopefully the number stays at 1.

I like Jim Anderton apart from when it comes to the issues of suicide, alcohol, and drugs.

Will be interesting to see how the earthquake affects the local election. Seems that Jim has been polling reasonably ahead. Often in disasters, voters will go for experience. Bob Parker has the experience of being a current mayor. Jim Anderton has decades of experience in parliament, including being a senior minister etc.

As soon as I saw Parker on the television yesterday I said that his re-election is guarenteed. He has received massive coverage, coming across in control, assertive and compassionate to the voters. Disasters are re-election gold.

Was thinking the same. Jim Anderton will need to work hard to keep his support -  pointing to the fact that overall he has much, much more experience in public office. Though, if I was him I'd be reconsidering the decision to not resign from parliament if he becomes mayor - that could well damage him even more now.

And, haha. Yip, I can admit to making puns / jokes on the earthquake, although not on here as of yet. I do have sympathy about what happened and for those affected.

The earthquake was extremely violent, I mean really really violent, i was in bed at 430am, and it woke me up, at the start of it, it just sounded like a wee one  that would stop, but then all of a sudden, it was massively loud and shooked the house so much, i mean you had to go through it to believe it, I tried to walk to the door way, but i couldnt make it, because the house was shaking so much, finally I made it, (once the violent part of it stopped), but it keep going and going and going, when it finally stopped, I knew this wasnt a little one and there would be serious damage to the city.

The streets are a mess.

Hats off to the council though and civil defense people, power, water and such are back on. Neighbiours were helping neighbours, the only two negative ascepts of human behavior  were the two looters and the guy selling bopttle water for ten bucks on the street corner. Other than that people were great.

So they reckon damage to be est 2$ Billion. probably more I reckon. Few my mates houses got big ass cracks through the walls etc. Kinda lucky they are renting, but feel for the landlords.Azevo2010-09-06 13:56:37
