The Wellington Phoenix announce the appointment of Gareth Morgan to the position of Technical Director.

Morgan brings a wealth of football knowledge with him, having two years’ experience as an owner of the Football Club.

Phoenix General Manager David Dome says the appointment of Morgan is an important addition to the Phoenix management team and signals that the Club is committed to utilising the range of skills possessed by those involved in the Club.

“Gareth is very passionate about the Wellington Phoenix. We are extremely pleased that he has agreed to widen his involvement with the Club and take on these additional responsibilities on top of his already busy role as a Club owner.”

Interim Coach Chris Greenacre seconded Dome’s sentiments, and is looking forward to working with Morgan in the off-season.

Morgan is confident he can add to the Management team.

“After selling Gareth Morgan Investments, I am excited to get stuck into a new project. I have been heavily involved with the Phoenix this season, travelling with the team and looking at sophisticated fitness and video analysis, along with being very involved with the Football School of Excellence this season.

“This opportunity is very exciting and I’m looking forward to shaping the team with the new Head Coach. So watch out Tony Popovic and Ange Postecoglou”.

Morgan’s appointment is effective immediately.

Personally think this is a good move as I have noticed Gareth at trainings and so the more say he has on the field then the better in my opinion

Not unhappy with the appointment to be honest. Brings a lot of experience and essentially formalises what he has been doing behind the scenes anyway. Congratulations.

better to have unity on and off the field I guess. Gareth does have a lot of connections so hopefully that will give him an edge in scouting players. I know people are gonna think I am being optimistic, but hoping we give him enough time to prove his coqching credentials before we criticise him

Why it is quite good is that it isn't outside the realm of possibility

I reckon this is going to be great. He'll sign a plethora of attackers, since "defence doesn't win titles".

Stoked, hopefully he can emulate a Cotterball style of play.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

So how will this appointment work in with Ricki Herbert who is "Technical Football Adviser"? And who was our former Technical Director?

Gareth Morgan has stepped down as Technical Director from the Wellington Phoenix with immediate effect.

Chairman Rob Morrison said that “While disappointed, we have accepted Gareth’s resignation after an alleged late morning training ground incident involving clip boards.”

Got a call from a friend earlier. He'd seen this link and was....well for a second the two of us were in midst WTF... then  I noticed the calendar....  pair of muppets...
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I have to say - I thought it was quite funny, though most of the people on FB didn't.

You gotta be able to laugh at yourself. Obviously the Nix realized the whole total football/Gareth at training was a cock up and made a joke about it.

I've heard worse jokes to be honest.

I thought it was quite funny, a good way for the club to step back and admit that they know what they did wrong in a light hearted way.

Well done the Nix, one of the better April Fools jokes I saw. Good sense of humour from the management. And Gareth, he must have been in on it.

Yeah I will raise my hand and say this got me. I read it and was like 'Oh this is a fucking piss take', jumped on here and found out it was.

Well played Mr Morrison. You got me this time but we shall do battle again.

(incidentally, I was 'got' last year as well on April fools with the announcement of Metallica splitting up. It took me two weeks to twig when it was not a big ticket news item)

I heard he broguht a hunting rifle to practice and was picking off non-native wildlife around the grounds as his first act of technical direction.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Phoenix CEO David Dome managed to keep his sense of humour despite the clubs disastrous season.

“We recognise it has been a tough season for the club and the fans so we had a talk amongst the owners and the board and said why don't we do this? A fun thing to end the season with and they were fully supportive of it.”

Is this galling?

For any attempt at sustaining and capitalising on what the club has achieved to date, it seems clear that's not what they're about.

A fan is a fan.

3 Sport laughed when reading the intro to the story mentioning Gareth's appointment as GM.

One Sport referenced the appointment and labelled it (and the season just gone) as lame.
