I'm looking at doing a spot of fishing over the summer here in Hawkes Bay and was wondering about licences. Are they compulsory for the casual fisherman like myself?

More likely to be Beach and/or Estuary fishing not freshwater.

No licence needed for saltwater fishing - just need to be aware of catch limits, sizes.

This Sunday at Queen's Wharf there is a session where you can learn to bait-up and cast from 11 am - 2 pm (free).  Then when you've reeled in all the cockabullies and spotties from Queen's Wharf you can go to the Tards game and throw fish at Harry and Marco.

Is there such a fish as the Tardfish?

EDIT: It would appear so...

Was down at Queen's Wharf this morning, kids caught their first spotties (however even smaller than Marco so had to throw them back - the spotties).  Also saw a big brown jellyfish swim by.

I think they have the blood lust now so might be out again next weekend if the weather is fine.

Nope - we've been told that out by Shelley Bay (or around from it) is good.  Might try there this weekend if fine (not).  Petone pier always has a few people.

Used to fish off the overseas terminal as a kid - don't know what that is like these days.

Last weekend we were told that the smaller the hooks the better for kids.  Bait - fish! A small amount - half a finger nail for a small hook and replace every few minutes as the "juices" will be lost.  Can use bread and some fish mixed up in a slurry to create a bit of burly too.

I got some dead/damaged mussels from Pak n Save - I'm going to try these as bait.

It's what we were told last weekend at Queen's Wharf (run by Pete Lamb's Fishing).  We got some spotties as did a whole lot of other kids (just bait, no burly).

If we catch anything edible I'll let you know.

This afternoon we went to Burnham Wharf (off Shelley Bay Rd).

We used the small hooks and some old mussels for bait. Jnrette got 4 spotties - one pretty massive (about the size of a small trevally) - meal size if it was edible.

Jnr Jnr got two.

Jnrette almost caught a large fish straight away but it came off the hook just as she got it to the surface (looked too large to be a spotty).

Now that we have decimated the Evans Bay spotty population we have a good supply of bait for the next hunter gatherer / man& children vs wild session.

A good Northeastern lad (Tyneside even i think).

Next week I will be teaching the kids how to snare an orca using only an old shoe lace, a pointed stick and a baby seal.

Get in!

Bear Grylls?

Actually I fancy myself as that guy from Hunting Aoteoroa (Howie?).

He gets to do every kind of killing and eating animals there is.

Weather looks good tomorrow so we will try out our spotty bait in the morning.

Probably not at Miramar Wharf as it will be a Northerly.

Lots of nibbles but no bites today. Tried Petone and then Miramar. I think the spotties were wise to us this time.

When someone in Queensland invites you fishing don't go.

Unless it's on the Goldie on a kick arse deep water power boat. Then, you say yes (and start dribbling).

Another perfect Wgtn day.

We hit Queen's Wharf in the afternoon and the spotties were jumping on to the hooks.

We used squid and mackeral as bait this time.

Might have to start making berley to get the big edible fish to take us seriously.

Took the kayak out off Karehana Bay near the reef yesterday, caught a couple of good sized gurnard and some small snapper over the sand. Flasher rigs with squid went down well.

Queen's Wharf again - Jnr Jnr caught 3 Kahawai (two undersize so went back into the water).

Food on the table tonight.

Theres not actually a legal size for kahawhai, just a daily catch limit.

Thanks! Just checked again and Trevally have a 25 cm limit. I skimmed through the table last time and didn't register that Kahawai have no size limit.

Anyone tried out soft baits from the shore?

Spotties are no longer fun and we have only got kahawai just the once.

Going to check out soft baits tomorrow and might get a spot of fishing in before school starts again next week.

That is one fish that I would rip the hook out messily and then make into berley.

I should use the Gouldie lure - some great catches so I'm told.

We now have some "Gulp" nuclear chicken soft bait (from Pete Lamb's in Lyall bay). Too windy to fish today, but also learned that we should use bonito rather than squid for bait (softer flesh so hard to stay on the hook but gives out more scent).

Possibly a weekend trip.

I've never had much luck with soft baits off the beach, great in a boat though.
Best bet for kahawhai, I find, is half a pilchard held on with elastic. I've been catching good kahawhai of the beach at Paekakariki. There is also good kahawhai to be had at Titahi Bay. PM me next time you're heading out for a fish, I might come along with the kids.

Well, a big long off-season for us hunter-gatherers.  January was our last outing.

Celebrating our first year with our very own tackle (ooh err) - from the Rebel Sports Labour weekend sale back then. So we went out on spur-of-the-moment fishing (theory being that if we didn't plan to do it, the fish would be taken by surprise).

Attempted to entice some fish off Queen's Wharf on Saturday - nothing, nada, and windy as.  Today Jnr Jnr and I went out to Oriental Parade just as the wet weather moved in.  Jnr Jnr got a 5 cm cockabully.

A gentle hit out...

Man no updates in 2 years! Seeing as we're heading into Spring id bump this back up from page 14...

Have been stock piling fresh bait lately, big hauls of mullet, mackerel and paddle crab for snapper fishing this summer. Have been out Makara off the rocks a few times lately, catching tonnes of blue cod too and the occasional tarakihi which is a good bonus as they dont come into shallow waters for too long.

Any one else been active lately?
