Update on the international series: Canada's goalkeeper announced as Andrew Engelage. 22, no NHL experience, highest level is 12 matches over two stints with their AHL affiliate the Toronto Marlies (the farm team for the Maple Laughs). He did ten matches with them in the 09-10 season, wasn't retained, and was only re-signed on an amateur contract after a series of injuries. Not listed on the Marlies website. Won the Memorial Cup (championship for Canada's major youth league with Windsor. Decent numbers with the ECHL's Utah Grizzlies.

Basically a prospect, and one seemingly less-than-valued by the Leafs (in all fairness, youth development isn't known as being a strong suit for Toronto - I'm not being biased or trash talking). From the press release:

Douglas Webber Group wrote:
Before his current Toronto Marlies team of the American Hockey League, Engelage  played professional hockey for the Utah Grizzlies and Reading Royals of the ECHL. Prior to turning pro, Engelage played for the Windsor Spitfires of the Otario Hockey League and helped his team capture the Memorial Cup and set the OHLs single season record for wins by a goaltender with 46. Engelage doesnt have the NHL experience behind him like John Graheme has to offer USA, but has shown an exceptional talent throughout his amateur and pro years, with a clear ability to stop a puck. His Grizzlies coach Keven Collie says he will be an NHL goalie very soon, and being in his peak years of physical ability should  counter the NHL experience Grahame brings to the ice.

I suppose this will help offset the idea of this being an old-timers series, and give the angle of an opportunity to see future NHLers as well as washed-up former NHLers.

how disappointing is that.  Well as much as I hate to say it, Boston deserve it.  4 out of 7 games absolutely hammering it. Oceanic62011-06-16 14:51:06

The VPD Chief was saying that rather than Canucks fans, this was sparked by troublemakers (specifically "anarchists") posing as such in order to stir up trouble. Although I've no doubt legitimate Canuck fans were involved. My ex got amongst it, but that wasn't due to disappointment, it was due to her being a drunk idiot.

Apparently police have reported that many of the arrested were from Seattle, Portland, Montreal & Toronto known to be "professional" rioters.

DRAFT DAY! Will begin at 11 with Edmonton picking Ryan Nugent-Hopkins first. Sens first pick at 6th unless we trade up - which may very well happen. Winnipeg expected to announce their adoption of the Jets moniker - AS THEY DAMN WELL SHOULD - although sadly the historical Winnipeg records will reside with Phoenix. Toronto expected to trade their first pick, rumour has it they're about to accept an offer in exchange for a $50 Canadian Tire dollars and a bag of pucks.

Also, loving Ottawa's new coach. WE'VE GOT THE BEST MOUSTACHE IN THE LEAGUE!

1. Edmonchuk select Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
2. Colorado select Gabriel Landeskog
3. Florida select Jonathan Huberdeau
4. New Jersey select Adam Larsson
5. Long Island select Ryan Strome
6. Ottawa selects Mike Zibanejad
7. Winnipeg JETS selects Mark Scheifele

Very happy with Zibanejad - was hoping we'd trade up then draft 2/3 of Landeskog, Huberdeau and Zibanejad. But ah well, we've got a fantastic pick.

Hearing Winnipeg's GM refer to his team as the Jets.... absolutely fantastic. Seemed like True North were insistent on a new name, but they've listened to the overwhelming support for the Jets name and are going with it. Also stoked to hear them give a shoutout to St. John's, NL!

With Boston's selection, the full extent of Toronto's offer sheet signing of Phil Kessel is apparent.

Toronto gained Kessel, while Boston gained Tyler Seguin and Doug Hamilton. Oh, and a Stanley Cup.

I'm not going. The product looks garbage (size and contents of rosters), and it's a bit too costly in regards to both time and money. I'll get my hockey fix when I fly down and catch the Dunedin leg of the NZIHL's Otago derby.  'mon the Stampede!

On the bright side, the Nix pre-season match in Dunedin is perfectly timed for us to catch the Winter Games hockey finals. Ice Blacks FTW!

It probably will be crap, but going to see live Ice Hockey will be awesome.

Lucky you getting to go to Dunedin.  What day are the Ice Blacks playing?

Indeed, but paying so much for tickets and transport to watch a bunch of has-beens and never-actually-weres play in a watered-down exhibition matches (2 lines per team = less energetic hockey) isn't my cup of tea. NZIHL and Ice Blacks much better value and far more meaningful.

Winter Games hockey is on the 17th-21st, Ice Blacks playing in a three-team tourney against Australia and China (was supposed to be four IIRC, Korea pulling out). No hockey on the 19th.

So tell us, Oceanic6, how was Vector Arena?

Since it's been a while:

The new Winnipeg Jets logo. Been some bitching about the "militaristic-ness" of the logo. IMHO they should have brought back the 90s logo, but I can understand the desire to promote this as a new team - even if I myself refuse to recognise the (soon to be renamed as) Arizona Coyotes as the same team as the original Winnipeg Jets. The wings shoulder-patch is fantastic

The new St. John's IceCaps logo, being the relocated Manitoba Moose. Loving the shapes of Newfoundland and Labrador on the mountain in white, but kinda average otherwise. Good to see them involve the Caps name in recognition of the hockey heritage of St. John's. Seriously considering buying a sweater of theirs if it looks good.

Also - Winnipeg Jets forward Rick Rypien was found dead at his home in Alberta today. Sad stuff. Never played for the Jets having been a new signing. With him, Derek Boogard and Tom Cavanagh, it's been a tough year for hockey. No official word yet on how he died.

Last bit - NZIHL final will be between the Botany Swarm and the MIGHTY Southern Stampede on the 27th. Funnily enough I may be in Auckland that weekend anyway for a conference, may be able to sneak away for it if I do go up.

Can't resist showing off how gorgeous the new Sens heritage sweater is.

This really is one of the best jerseys in the NHL... hell, if not the best sweater in hockey full stop. It's a perfect mix of Ottawa hockey history and modern design. Throw in the story of how this was inspired and partially designed by a Sens fan... I can't see how this could have been improved upon whilst still adhering to Reebok's design specifications. I really am in love with this sweater. Totally makes up for the disappointment of the 2011-13 adidas Nix kit.

I've been tossing up between getting a Senators heritage sweater and an IceCaps home sweater. I love the IceCaps jersey even if it is just the Jets home sweater with the STJ logo (it looks better for St. John's than it does for Winnipeg IMO), but it's nothing overly special nor unique. And the Sens sweater is too damn beautiful to resist.

...oh yeah, and Botany defeated my Stampede to win the 2011 NZIHL title. I managed to attend the final along with Footpaul, who is always a pleasure to hang out with even though it wasn't until he decided we should visit the bar that the teams starting scoring again!

Yikes, sorry N-Bomb completely forgot to answer you!

Pittsburgh are defo a team to watch, even without Crosby they're doing well. I expected both Boston and Vancouver to be doing better - the Canucks are a good team who choked, whereas Boston were a worthy winner last season. The Rangers certainly look to have a better season, signing Brad Richards could prove to be massive.

Love seeing how well Edmonton have started the season, especially with Smyth back to finish his career with the Oil. And naturally, I'm looking forward to the upcoming Leafs collapse!

They have the same problem as the Chicago Cubs - the support they receive even at their worst results in no financial impetus to improve.  I personally dislike the Sabres more (who we are currently playing - they're up 2-1).

NHL All-Star game voting now open:
http://vote.nhl.com

Step 1: Select Daniel Alfredsson
Step 2: Select four other players
Step 3: Log-in and submit.

If Alfie doesn't get in, it'll be a tragedy. It's probably his last season and the All-Star Game is being held in Ottawa. The man deserves selection more than anyone else.

I've only been able to follow online - no TV, and my connection is too slow, ARGH. The Sens have had a surprisingly good start for a rebuilding team - this may not be best though, it could result on us missing a high draft pick whilst still not being a playoff contender. Toronto have started well, but like ever year they'll collapse. Edmonton are doing well too, and Pittsburgh are doing great even without Crosby.

As for the Sens heritage sweater - one should be on my doorstep before the week is over!

The Caps haven't proven to be a good playoff team, but if that changes they'll certainly be a contender. And I stand by my statement that Ovechkin is better than Crosby - even if #87 earned my eternal love in the Olympics!
