Film recommendation.

The Wrestler was good. Rourke was great in both that and Sin City.

If you want to see a good horror I'd recommend Rec. It's Spanish but it's very well done. I think there's a cheap and shameless hollywood knock-off called Quarantine which I won't be watching, but Rec is a good one.

Grandma's Boy is an excellent comedy.

Yeah, you get the impression he loves himself, that Tarantino bloke. It's impossible to criticize any of his work because there's always someone who'll tell you that it's meant to be that way. For example, some of the acting in Inglourious Basterds was poor and I said so and then I was berrated as "it was meant to be like that".

I think that's true though, particularly the Mike Myers scene in Basterds.

People should really watch Pulp Fiction at least, because it's genuinely good.

Jackie Brown is fantastic. A lot to do with the great cast, and the Elmore Leonard story, but give QT his props, he directed it brilliantly.

I'm a relative Fincher fan. Se7en, Fight Club, Panic Room, Zodiac were all good. Alien 3 (fan of the series Aliens, Cameron's being my favourite) but the new cut of it is a big improvement on the original release, suggest people check it out if they only seen first cut. Also 'Curious Case of Benjamin Button' was an interesting concept, and fairly entertaining.

I've read about Zodiac Killer in San Fransisco
is this film about these events (60's-'70's)?

Fight Club has the Pixies at the end
good use of music in film

well i watched "No Country for Old Men" last night
pretty good
best film I see this year although the only other film I watch is Iron Man

the psychopathic killer dude was excellent actor.
I think Milllers Crossing was better but this was better than Fargo

those brothers have certainty made some very good films.

Donny Brasco - I watched that last night for the first time (Extended edition - extra 15 mins). A very well done movie.

Good film, Johnny Depp is good in that (as always). Similar to Mou Gaan Dou (Infernal Affairs) Hong Kong movie trilogy, then remade as hollywood movie Scorsese's 'The Departed' which is also very good.

The Departed is a very good movie but the first hour of it is possibly the boringest hour of anyone's life.

Love Donnie Darko, great film that.

Does anybody know of any good horrors? I like horrors but good ones are few and far between and I don't have time to sift through all the fecal matter that is the majority of horrors.

Watching an oldie at the mo which is quite good - 3 days of the Condor. Robert Redford.

Horror? The Omen, The Exorcist, even Poltergeist had a few scare moments. Such as the clown under the bed. bad if you have a Clown phoebia. I don't.

Want to see [REC] missed it at last years film festival, have been told it is a very good horror. Also was told 'Orphan' was surprisingly good, maybe not great, but that's in the theaters now.

Have been branching out to crazy Japanese films; Watched 'Battle Royale', worth a look... Death Note 1 and 2. As well as a few animes; Ghost in the Shell, Akira and some Miyazki films. On Japanese, still haven't seen Seven Samurai and any other Kurosawa, need to sit down and see some of them.

REC is a very good movie. Well worth a watch, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought Orphan looked good. It's got an average rating on imdb (from memory) but I'll just rent it for free when it comes out (perks of working at Video Ezy).

I've seen Battle Royale, it was quite good. I know I'll be viciously attacked for saying this, but the Americanised version of it (called The Condemned) is a more enjoyable film. People love to say that the original movie is always better but I can't agree in this case. And in a number of ways Battle Royale isn't original either. As a side note, the reason the children are put on the island to fight in Battle Royale is very, very weak unless I seriously missed something.

The Exorcist scares the sh*t out of me but somehow fascinating. I find "Seven" quite disturbing.

These are not films but TV series that you can get on DVD - "Band Of Brothers" & "Underbelly - Series 1" Apparently, the latter can not be shown in Victoria & Victorians are not allowed to possess copies of the DVD because of on-going court cases/investigations.

Hostel is great, Wolf Creek is good also. The Orphanage (not to be confused with 'Orphan' that is out now) is really good too.

Last night they had "The Grudge" on telly. WTF was that all about? It seemed very disjointed.

One episode drew a parallel to a useless ex-boss of mine. The voice-over said, referring to a commanding officer..."He was a bad officer not because he made bad decisions but because he didn't make any decisions". In the end of the episode that officer was relieved of his command during an attack because he lost it & lost momentum, & couldn't make any decisions during the battle which cost too many of his unit's men.

I'm sure the tin case box set is in Whitcoulls. They have both versions going very cheap at the mo.

Horror movies:

Some of the classics are still the best (Exorcist, Omen, Poltergeist...)

Most modern horros are tripe but Se7en was brilliant (is it horror or thriller?) The Ring was good. Stir of Echoes and Shutter are ok (i.e. have some good moments).

Inglorious Basterds looks like garbage. Another attempt by Americans to rewrite WWII.

Band of Brothers (although not a movie but must be mentioned)

Flags of Our Fathers
Letters from Iwo Jima
Downfall - one of the best but don't watch when you're tired as it's in German with subtitles so need to concentrate (actually Letters is the same)

Flags of our Fathers was a snorefest.

People say Inglorious Basterds was amazing but it really wasn't. Enjoyable enough but it was too long. Like other Tarantino movies it relied on dialogue (dialogue which wasn't particularly good at all). Not by any means saying it was bad, mind.

Between the 2 Clint Eastwood directed movies - Flags Of Our Fathers & Letters From Iwo Jima, I thought Letters was better. It showed the human side of a soldier.

Das Boot rates as a mention, again with English subtitles. It's not the same having English dialogue, it takes away the authenticity.

I've not seen Inglorious Basterds or Valkyrie, but the thought of Pitt & Cruise respectively playing such characters puts me off.

Kubrick's 'Full Metal Jacket' and Oliver Stone's 'Platoon'?

Films I've seen recently (actually that I can think of that I've seen in last few months) that I thought were pretty good, 'In Bruges' Colin Farrell is pretty funny in that and also 'Frost/Nixon'. 'Yes man' was surprisingly alright. No one actually went on a rant about how amazing 'The Hangover' was, I thought it was good, but was expecting much better after what everyone had told me.

Hurt Locker is really good, as is District 9

Gran Torino had good reviews, but is f**king rubbish. Avoid.

I thought Hurt Locker was pretty good, but no where near as amazing as I was lead to believe it was going to be. One thing I did find a bit weird was the fact that the phrase "hurt locker" was never mentioned or referenced in the film at all - in fact, I still have no idea what it means or how it is related to the movie (although I can obviously guess). I was a bit pissed when I got there, so maybe it was mentioned, but I can't recall it.

I thought Gran Torino was pretty good, actually. Although, to be fair, there could be a movie with Clint sitting in a chair wearing a welders mask and reading a book for 90 minutes and I would think it was a masterpiece. I want to be clint.
