I'm not a conspiracy theorist but Oliver Stone's "JFK" is quite compelling/believable.  Also read the book the film is based on by Jim Garrison, the then New Orleans District Attorney who investigated the assassination.

Gran Torino is absolutely brilliant.  Clint's acting is phenomenal, great story, most of the acting was alright (except one of the Hmong actors), some good laughs, good drama.  Real pity that it was his last movie acting in (or so I heard).

He directed Changeling, though, which I thought was a really good movie.  I'm no fan of Jolie (at all) but she did well and it was a good story (loosely based on true events) put together well.

Saw 'The  Taking of Pelham 123' it was alright, a decent action movie.

Just finished watching 'Cemetery junction' and realised Coming-of-Age-Films I watch, I generally like.

Favourites include: City of God, Donnie Darko, Almost Famous, C.R.A.Z.Y, Breakfast Club, Ferris Buellers Day Off, This is England, Boyz in the Hood, Dazed and Confused, An Education, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Into the Wild...

So anyone got any other recommendations?

Into the wild isn't so much a coming of age story as a romanticized version of the true story of a guy who committed suicide by ill advised camping in an extreme region.

I like keeping up with the steins, across america. mirromask is about growing up even if combines coming of age with muppets - add in labyrnth as also a good one. cinema paradiso, boy, Y Tu Mama Tambian, and one of the most outstanding is an argentian movie XXY

Saw Departures recently. I liked it.A Japanese movie.
Also saw A single man. Colin Firth is great.

yes I saw Departures early last year and as it was within six months of my mum dying wasn't sure if I'd cope with a movie about someone seeing off the dead but it was handled brilliantly and the main character had such dignity towards both the departed and their left behind - plus its quite funny and I was even able to laugh stealthkiwi2010-07-10 10:06:33

Just watched "Fan Boys" which is a laugh. Lots of parodies and "in" jokes. Star Wars V Star Trek.

Was at the Embassy theatre last night watching 'Ghostbusters' with hundreds of other movie goers. Was brilliant seeing it again after many many years. There were even 4 guys dressed up as Venkman etc

I like horrors but haven't seen your 3 recommendations Stefan. One of the most atmospheric and scary movies I've seen is the Spanish movie The Orphanage produced by Guillermo del Toro of Pan's Labyrinth fame and that is also a scary movie in parts. another one that freaked me out is the original Japanese version of Deep Water

I dislike the way hollywood remakes other countries movies ( for the lowest common denominator of americans who can't read subtitles) but must admit I find The Ring is one of the few jap horror remakes where the us version is as good as the original

The Last House on the Left sounded a bit 'rapey' for me, personally.  Haven't actually seen it, that's just what I've heard.

Rec and Rec 2 are great horror movies.  They're Spanish and really, really good.  More people are probably familiar with Quarantine - the American remake for people to fat and lazy to read subtitles.

Saw Predators the other night and it's quite good.  Adrien Brody as a tough guy though?  Not convinced.

There is a rape scene which. ive never seen in a movie before and goes too long for how graphic it is. despite that it is good.


Also. Inglorious Basterds.
Looked like a good movie and had its moments. But it was about 80% boring chat and 20% actual war scenes. Plus brad pitts accent was f**king annoying.Stefan2010-07-10 21:24:19

I highly recommend everyone watches the original on DVD, if only for the cast commentary. Without doubt the best such commentary I've ever heard. Most of the time it's the actors talking about who they f**ked from the cast, how Sean Cunningham and Wes Craven had no idea what they were doing, and generally lamenting at how they could have made such a horrible movie. Utterly brilliant.

Inglorious Basterds, in my opinion, was quite good but lacked enough war and scalping etc.  Also think it would have been cool if Bear Jew was 7 foot 5 and took the heads off the Nazi's with a single swing.  I don't really like Tarantino at all though, so that has possibly influenced my opinion.

Recently watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest which was really good and if you're looking for a laugh then Office Space is the way to go.  Recently saw it and it's actually hilarious.  Could be described as rofl-inducing.  Made by the genius men involved in King of the Hill but funny in very different ways.

Cum Glazed Brits 18

Anyone around my age will have all their childhood memories restored with Toy Story 3, it was incredible nostalgia.

I thought that after Cum Glazed Brits 12 they really dropped the ball and by 14 it was just terrible.

Apocalypse Now for light family viewing.

John Carptenters "Vampires" was a decent movie made even better with James Woods in fine form.

Nah, it's just as nasty and horrible. But then you watch it with the commentary on, and it's hilarious! (make sure it's the "Collectors Edition, as I think the other editions have Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham commenting.)

Loved that film. One of the best "B" movies ever, imo.

Another good one is Dead Snow.  About Nazi Zombies.  You can't go wrong.

Toy Story 3 - wow!

Pixar continue to create masterpieces enjoyed just as much by adults as children. They have yet to make a bad film and TS3 is one of the best yet.

Toy Story 3 has 9.1/10 on imdb from 35 000 votes.  Often they start off high with a few votes and then go down sharply, but that's heaps.  I look forward to it coming out on DVD.

I watched the Royal Tenenbaums today and wow, easily one of the dullest movies I've ever watched.  Hoping King of the Hill in ten minutes will make up for its sorry display.

Not a Wes Anderson fan? That sort of humour is either you love it or don't get it.

Gone off imdb a little, like having a look at Metacritic and Rottentomatoes too.

It's the only of his films I've seen.  The others don't strike me as my type.

I'll make a mental note to avoid them.
