As many of you may know (and if not you should) I ref rugby in CHCH.

I was doing a match between STAC and Linwood at STAC today..

So anyway 2 mins before full time with Linwood leading 26-14 after a fairly decent game, not really any foul play, I award a try to STAC, when the Linwood players believe there was a knock on.

All the Linwood players start abusing me verbally which I ignore. I walk back to near the point where the kicker is preparing and one of the Linwood players decides they'll throw the ball at me.

I told them to go and have a sit down have a sit down for 10 minutes.

So another Linwood player walks over and starts pushing me with his shoulder, trying to intimidate me.

I told him to sit down aswell, again for 10 minutes. Though in retrospect it should have been Red.

Well I have been doing this, the kicker has lined up his kick. And is standing in position waiting for me to blow time on.

At this stage one of the Linwood players goes on what I thought was an early charge. I tell him to stay and he decides to kick the ball off the tee, too half way.

At this stage I've had enough, So I suspend the game and award it too STAC.

i used to ref rugby in rotorua. as you could probably imagine there are some rough and ready schools in dare old vegas that quite fancied having a go at the little white guy. never thought about carrying a knife, mindew i never had a situation like that though. closest came in a senior bs game i did once where a massive brawl broke out, probably 25 of the 30 players involved, i carried on play because i didnt see what started it. a try was scored, i wasnt going to penalise anyone because i didnt know what had happened. fair to say the team that got scored against was more than a bit preplexed

It's a weight grade (Under 70KG) so I don't know ages for certain but I would say most would be 14-17

Good work PG, I've been in your boots before and it's not always fun. I used to ref youth rugby in Tauranga - not by choice, it was the classic  "One coach refs the first half, other coach refs the second" system (coaching being the most fun ever, I highly recommend it!). A family friend coached a grade or two above me at the same time and found himself having to call the game off as a 0-0 draw because he kept getting abused by everyone - players, coaches, and especially the parents. The closest I got to calling off a game was the last game of the season, and it was as a coach rather than as a ref - the first half I ref'd my boys (who were top of the table or at least very near it) against one of the more dodgier teams, and I had to warn a few players. Second half, the coach had identified our best players and sent his roughest players on a mission to deliberatly injure my boys - head high tackles etc. Luckily they weren't successful and it only ended with minor knocks to two players, but if it had gotten more out of hand I would have called off the game.

There's massive issues in Oz getting refs (and coaches) for kids and lower grade sport... the only exception seems to be AFL.... hmmmmm....

The AFL doesn't use kids as umpires, but plenty of lower leagues do. And they cop a hammering from ugly parents, too...it'd be an absolute biatch of a job, considering so many of the rules of the game depend on umpire interpretation...

Front page story on the Dom today about a Hawkes Bay ref with 15 years experience quitting due to the lack of respect he was being shown by teams. He'd had a gutsful. Gooner 4 Life2008-06-19 13:09:36

This is no good. The AFL is trying to stop umpires being insulted, and rugby is always brought up as an example of a code where the players treat the officials with utmost respect...be tragic if this trend is allowed to continue.

Na, It was fairly tight, but Linwood played a little better. Too bad 3 silly players spoilt the match.

Perhaps it is a reflection of young people today who value nothing and respect nothing as well. When we were kids and did any of this we copped one around the ears and learned to respect authority and/or our elders. Sad to say but the generation  aged between 12 & 25 today just dont give a f--k or at least that is the impression they seem to be or want to be seen portraying.

Sideline referees/parents don't help set the example either. There's winning and then there's WINNING. Today they don't know how to be good winners or good losers.

Looks like your in good company PG.

A West Coast rugby match was abandoned at the weekend after a player allegedly threatened to shoot the referee.

The senior-grade rugby game, between Grey Valley and South Westland, on Saturday came to an abrupt halt when an unknown Grey Valley player allegedly told the ref Steve Manzies he would put "a bullet in his head", The Press reported today.

A spectator said that the incident happened after a Grey Valley player had been yellow-carded.

"The South Westland players had to actually escort the ref off the pitch," the spectator added.

West Coast Rugby Union chief executive Mike Connors confirmed a meeting with Grey Valley had taken place. "That's the end of the matter," he said, declining further comment.

However, Menzies, said the West Coast Referees' Association had met the union and sought assurances from the Grey Valley club that referees were safe.

Menzies said no-one was charged as no-one knew which of three players made the threat.

Menzies, a member of the union board, said the union was taking the matter seriously.

"There are ways and means of dealing with things," he said. "And target practice is not one of them."

I was a bit pissed when I red that aswell. I'm 16 and I "give a f--k".

And to use that generalization is ridculous. The incident mentioned in the first post is the only time I as a referee have had someone be what I would consider disrespectful to me in the 40-50 matches I would have done. When you consider that I ref I've refereed around 1200 players (admittedly I do some teams more than once) it shows that 99% of players have great respect for refs and more often than not for authority in general...

Well said PG. I'm a football referee and a 16 year old, and the amount of respect I get is huge. I never get any abuse.   I don't know any one who has that attitude that you have bluntly stated LG. You need to get out more, not all teenagers  are like the ones in South Auckland.

i've experienced this same kinda thing in football as a player up in aucks. i play for Albany football club in under 19 grade 1st div., n still in the grading round we had to make a trip to te atatu, which doesnt have the best rep in the world, and also happened to be top of the table without a loss.
problem one started where our coach the week beforehand completed a reffing course, and was allocated our match as his first one. game went reasonably smoothly, until the 40 min mark when he gave us a penalty, which wa slightly dubious, but nevertheless we missed it

we started the 2nd half and found ourselves a goal down in 5 mins, and equalised quickly, this is when the sh*t started, few calls rightly go against their team and the parents, and players lose it completely, i subbed onto right wing infront of their parents n supporters etc, they went crazy at me, coach repeatedly telling me to fck off, when i told him to calm down from yelling at the ref, i got taken out, guy got yellowed and we got more abuse, game went out of hand, we ended up winning 3-2. we have a grudge match soon when we play them next lol

its amazing how this sort of sh*t happens, as a player its so frustrating
