Air New Zealand is removing a scene from its in-flight safety video after complaints from members of the gay community.

The offending scene depicts a coy All Black Richard Kahui turning down an opportunity to peck the cheek of gay Air New Zealand flight attendant Will Coxhead.

Operations and safety manager David Morgan said among the complaints was a suggestion from a professor that the video could lead to gay male suicides.

Hang on...WHAT?!

How could you possibly reach that conclusion. Over reaction much?

Maybe post other things in here that make you do a double take and say "Hang on..WHAT?!" could be interesting, who knows.

Before the anti-PC brigade get too worked up over the alleged comment made by one suspiciously anonymous professor let us all reflect for a moment on the far more considered and wise words of Grant Robertson MP in the same article:

Grant Robertson wrote:
I took it in the spirit of fun. But I can certainly understand some people might be concerned about it. Air New Zealand are behaving responsibly here. It is their decision

And that's an actual quote from a real person, not some out-of-context piece of hearsay being relayed to a reporter by an Air NZ employee!

My main complaint about the "gay kiss-off" in the safety video is that it is just one of a succession of terrible sight gags and jokes in an apalling badly acted video involving the horribly over-exposed All Blacks. In short, it's sh*t.

To be fair, its just our sensationalist media trying to make a story out of nothing.

More I think about this story you'll probably find the people complaining aren't gays, but rather the "Cristian family the video damaged my son/daughter for life lets all go to church" types.

Yeah i definetly know that. That quote was actually very sensible "I took it in the spirit intended - fun. But can see how some would be offended"

My shock was at the completely random one leading to gay suicide. Im not getting worked up. I posted it as it was quite funny (not suicide, but the fact they wrote that someone said an all black turning down a kiss on the cheek on a video could lead to suicide)

I suspect if this "professor" actually said anything of the sort it would be more along the lines of this being a very small and relatively innocuous example of the kind of light hearted jibe that if repeated over a long period enough period of time could eventually build up the pressure on someone already struggling with their sexuality. Which is quite different to saying the video "could lead to gay male suicides".

Anyway, if Air New Zealand are sufficiently concerned to alter the video then good for them.

So on a related topic when are we going to finally get our first openly gay All Black?

Depending on the exact definition used around 2% of the male population are gay (rising to as high as 7-8% if you include bisexual or "have ever had a homosexual experience").

There have been well over 1,000 All Blacks so in theory at least 20 of those were or are gay, and maybe up to 200 have had some kind of homosexual experience. I suppose you could argue that gay men might be less likely to play the game of rugby (mostly for spurious reasons) but even so, it seems unlikely that there has never been a gay All Black.

Of course, it's entirely an individual's business whether they are gay or not, and whether they choose to share that information with the world. It's just that an openly gay All Black* would be a really healthy and positive thing for the country, in my view. I'm sure it would do a lot to break some taboos and help reduce depression and suicide rates among young gay men.

*I'm picking on the All Blacks in particular here because of their standing in the nation's consciousness and the fact that they are so strongly associated with what it is to "be a man" in this country.

It was interesting reading a lot of the stories in Britain following Gareth Thomas coming out in Wales. It would be fascinating in a kind of morbid way to see what would happen should an All Black come out.

I'm guessing it's not Robin Brooke

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

What amused me was the steward in the clip really is Gay and he's upset at it being removed and thought it was a completed over-reaction by a few others.

Secondly, good enough for Graham Henry to kiss Mils, good enough for the steward!

Thirdly,  as the steward said, some people in this country are just too precious. The clip has been running for a few months then the few complaints all happened last week only.

Personally, I found the pre flight clip funny whilst making a point about safety instructions. It was a good clip and should have been left alone.

I think that the NZRFU had to modify the script when they realised that Dan Carter would be unavailable to play the role played by Richard Kahui.

In the original version the Steward and Dan Carter join the Mile High Club with Richie McCaw hanging around at the back of the ruck for some loose ball...

This will age me but I still remember the huge kerfuffle whn Ian Roberts came out (about 15yrs ago now). It must have been a widely known fact amongst the players for years and they were mostly great with their comments and public acceptance but man the media had a frenzy

*sigh* yet another waste of a great body lol

On a related note I see FIFA and Blatter are giving the pink dollar a good reason not to support the 2022 World Cup.

Can't believe Blatter has the gall to say "Football is a game that does not affect any discrimination. You may be assured ... if people want to watch a match in Qatar in 2022, they will be admitted to matches." yet they chose a country where some people aren't welcome

I thought the granny streaking down the aisle was worse than male cabin crew gesturing Kahui for a kiss. The whole video was well done.
