Since  there are two of them I'd say it was the new black.

I walked from the city to Eastbourne once.

I don't recommend it.

If an ice rink isn't commercially viable because of lack of people, what chance does a light railway have?

I've done this as a run a few times. Clarrie Gibbons I think its called, in February.

Always seems to be a lot longer than you think (especially round all the bays at the end) and the part by the motorway isn't much fun.

I did it years ago (I was 17 I think) with a mate after a party up near the botanical gardens. We had lots of heavy, deep stuff to talk about (mainly girls, Public Enemy, girls, art history class, girls and girls.) It just keeps going and going, and those bays all look the same, you think you're around the last one and then bam! there's another.

Might be fun to ride it though, hope that lane idea does get up.

Light rail = reduced buses. There'd be demand. That being said, I don't know if light rail would offer much more than an expensive alternative to buses.

As for an ice rink not being commercially viable, what do you base that on? Not criticizing just curious, I've yet to hear anything negative about the chances of a permanent rink.

Mehhhh never man !!
No I'm  still going to have a go at the rump of Prendergast followers left on the council who 2 minutes after the election is over  are now  whining about the new  Mayor not being inclusive enough  (front page today's Dompost)for goodness sake give the woman a chance !
Its about  time the sycophantic  Mercer and his ragbag of corporate cohorts stopped bleating about the electoral system  used and accepted  that their leader  lost the  election fairly  and squarely ,Celia Wade Brown is the most preferred person for the job not Kerry and that is simply that  !
Regarding the article in the Dompost it sounds like there's a few squeaky bums in the council worried about what kind of portfolios they might get this time round ,its a bugger when the trough runs dry !
The Queen  is dead long live the Queen  !get used to it!!

(ooh that feels so much  better now  Harry!)

Good to see that the new Mayor has flagged the endless  junkets on the rates  to China that were a speciality of the last chain wearer!!
Good start

I also see that she's declined a council credit card. What is so Green about not having a credit card?Wongo2010-10-20 23:46:23

Not sure there'd be a successful light rail in wellington. seems to me the idea needs some thorough investigation before any design/route work should start. Passenger uptake will be key. No point in designing and building the thing if the demand isn't there.

There's some interesing elevations between wellington and the airport too. Steepedt gradient on the DLR in london is about 5.5%... I expect the MT Vic bus tunnel would be the only suitable way through the hill

What's so green about having a council credit card?
The decision to keep it would still have been a policy decision.

Not sure what the credit card refusal is all about but the light rail proposal may have some merit ,I agree that  it will have to be researched thoroughly before anything goes ahead .
The previous Mayors support for  grandiose ideas like  a flyover at the basin reserve and the gigantic fish zoo  at Te Raekaihau Point were bizzare and expensive concepts ,i just hope the new Mayor is a little less reckless and extravagant  with Wellington  ratepayers money!

Talking to the ice rink developer in Auckland a month ago. He'd been to scope it but said it was a no go-er.
