I had a couple of kids in my class last year who decided (intermediate level) that they were emo. Dyed their hair black and put Bullet For My Eat World or whatever badges on their schoolbags. Lasted about 3 weeks. Then they were into nu-metal or something.
Movements like these are targeted at pre-teens these days. Let them have fun with it and us older folk can just sit back and make tssskkkk-like noises.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

when I was a young boy, my father took me into the city to see a marching band.

He said "son when you grow up, will you be the saviour of the broken, the beaten and the damned?"

I said no.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

If you're Emo and you know it, slash your wrists!
If you're Emo and you know it, slash your wrists!
If you're Emo and you know it (and since you REALLY want to show it)

Was at Big Day Out kast year ( My Chemical Romance were there as well) and the unfunny MC'ss at the Lily Pad decided to give this poor sod some grief about killing himself and being Emo.
Well he was about 25 and the crowd got stuck into the MC calling him a t**ser for not knowing the difference between an Emo and a Goth.

At least Goths have superb music

I'll put this as nicely as I can - if you hear the word "emo" and you don't immediately think of some great post-hardcore bands like Rites of Spring, Dag Nasty, Sunny Day Real Estate and Quicksand then you are a f**kwit.

The teenage fashion trend currently defined as "emo" is nothing more than that - a fashion trend.

We need to remember, however, that all teenagers are temporarily f**ked in the head and vulnerable to ridiculous fashion trends.

Emo's one redeeming feature is that it might take the more curious teenager back closer to it's roots and other excellent bands like Samiam, Jawbreaker and Texas is the Reason (who take their name from a line in The Misfits song "Bullet" which makes it probably the coolest band name ever). From there it's only a hop, skip and a jump to some of the greatest sh*t ever - Fugazi, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Husker Du, Mission of Burma, the list goes on.

Give the kids a break - everybody was a dick when they were 16 (and if you weren't what the f**k were you doing?).

Here here! 'Emo' music manifests itself in 'Indie' theses days. Bands like.....well most of them are influenced by bands terminator just listed or ones with a connection to them, Pavement being a big one.

Haha, plenty of truth to that but they and plenty of other bands of the 90's were also influenced by 'Emotional Hardcore', about the only current Indie band I can think of that talks about being influenced by Flying Nun bands are The Shins who idolise The Clean.

The rest just talk about Pavement, Beat Happening etc.

the definition of emo has stretched so far these days that if you dress remotely different from the status quo you're going to be called it, regardless of what music you listen to. I can't stand the music personally. But the hatred of emo's is so widespread these days its scary, especially when "they" (whoever they are) don't do anything to affect or hurt anyone else.

It was the same with "gothics" when I was in high school.

Dye your hair? Gothic. Listen to music that isn't on ZMFM 24/7? Gothic. Hang out in Karori cemetary drinking vodka? Gothic.

Apologies for the length but this is genius, as stolen from Encyclopedia Dramatica:
When I was an emo

My father said I looked like a woman

And smacked me in the head

He said

"Son when you grow up, do you really want to look like a f**king drag queen?

And be beaten and be damned?"

He said

"Will you cut your hair, change your clothes, and just stop f**king whining, 'cos no-one gives a sh*t?

Because one day you'll see that,

A MySpace page doesnt mean that,

You have any friends at all."

When I was an emo,

My father said I looked like a woman

And smacked me in the head

He said,

"Son when you grow up, do you really want to look like a f**king drag queen?

And be beaten and be damned?"

Sometimes I get the feeling they're all laughing at me (oh wait, they are!)

And other times I feel like I should die (Yes I should!)

Through it all, I whine and bawl, have tantrums in the streets.

When you're gone we want you all to know

We'll have a laugh,

We'll have a laugh

Though your dead and gone believe me your torment will go on

Have a laugh

We'll have a laugh

And in my heart I cant contain it

The lulz are too much to explain it

And we will send you reeling from decimated dreams

The internet hate machine will kill you all

So, watch out, blacks! They'll take it back

Lets shout it loud and clear

The swimming pool is closed

We hear the call to LULZ

To have a laugh

We'll have a laugh

Though your dead and gone believe me your torment will go on

We'll have a laugh

And though you're broken and defeated we're still pissing ourselves with laughter

And on we carry through the lulz

Ooh oh ohhhh

Disappointed faces of your mom

Ooh oh ohhhh

Take a look at me cause

I could not care at all, f**king emo

I'll never get free

Cause the world, will always hate me

Anon will laugh, they will break me

Want it all

I'm gonna whine this part

Wont stop crying or get over it

I should be ashamed

I'm gonna show my tears

Look at my hair, such an awesome fringe

Listen here, because it's only..

I'm just a man

I'm not an emo! (I like pop punk!)

Just a boy, who's meant to whinge this song

Just a man,

I'm not an emo! (I like pop punk!)

We -- don't -- care

Have a laugh

We'll have a laugh

Though your dead and gone believe me Your torment will go on

We'll have a laugh

And though you're broken and defeated we're still pissing ourselves with laughter

We'll have a laugh
