Individual footballers you would pay to watch

Three for me, and two for them.

The whole Beckham thing and people only going to watch him got me thinking, what footballers (or sportsmen in general i spose) would you pay to watch just for them.

Here's my provisional list:

Zinedine Zidane
Thierry Henry
Dennis Bergkamp
Robert Pires
Ronaldo (The Real one)
Juan Roman Riquelme

If i was to pick a few other sportsmen i would probably throw Tiger, Nadal and Tendulkar in there.

Sachin Tendalkar, Ronaldinho at his prime, Warne if I was in india during the ICL lol. Lewis Hamilton, Tiger, Both Nadal and the Fed express. Possibly even Chris Gayle who is IMO the most underrated player in world cricket. Kallis and Andrew Johns aswell.  Gangsta!2008-12-04 23:33:52

Slightly off topic but here goes anyway.

99.99% of you will never have heard of him (Ginger Eejit will have!) but there's a guy who used to play for Partick Thistle called Chic Charnley. Possibly one of the most gifted players I have ever seen in all my time of watching football. Unfortunately, he was also completely bonkers. Among his claims to fame are that he holds the British record for the amount of red cards received! Now retired, but the money I spent watching him was well worth it.

There are hundreds of stories about Chic but here's a certified one.

'The Jags are playing Falkirk away, and in the warm-up some foul-mouthed teenage fan is belabouring the maestro about his ability. Chic is idly caressing the ball with his left peg. "Go on, f****** hit me," shouts the callow youth. Chic slams the ball, from 30 yards, smack into his face. "Hah," responds the lad, spitting out teeth, "bet you couldn't do that again." Exit remaining dentures.'

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Not sure why you would pay to see an Individual play football when it is a Team sport!

I saw Francis Lampard play for West Ham and while he was good he didn't look anything special.

Also when you look back to the successful Real Madrid sides over past 10 years and Chelsea's Premier League successes of the 2000's theres one name that barely ever gets a mention yet he, for mine, was the reason both sides were so damn good to watch and that was Geremi!

To analyse and study the individual on his own and what he does throughout a match that makes him so successful and brilliant to watch. I remember a few years back a movie/doco was made on Zidane which was about his final game at Madrid, it was just the camera following him for 90 minutes, it was brilliant.

Three for me, and two for them.

Purely hypothetical but would Zidane have been as good as he was for Real Madrid if he were to have played at say Derby or Coventry?

Awesome player I agree but the players around him did contribute somewhat to his brilliance!

No, but he still would of been brilliant. He was amazing during Euro 2000, not since Maradona in 86 had anyone dominated a single tournament so much. World Player of the Year 3 times, 3 goals in 2 WC Finals, That goal in the 2002 Champions League final. By no means a big match bottler.

Best player of the current generation and i'd probably gamble that if he came down here a la Beckham that everyone on here would love to see him in the flesh.

Three for me, and two for them.

Think the crowd for the Galaxy game in Wellington shows that it happens, C-D

Of course he would have. He wouldn't have won as many trophies (if any) but his skill and ability would have still been clearly evident. Guess a bit like Ronaldinho at PSG.

Personally think Zidane's one of the best footballers ever.

A good example of fans who went to see Beckham in Wellington.

When we saw the La Galaxy team hotel everyone was waiting outside for Becks right, while Donovan was causally leanin out on the balcony on the first floor. Good time to jump in and throw stuff up for a signature then as he was practically invisible to most there!

What amazed me about Becks visit last year was the ignorance shown towards utter legend Ruud Gullit.

Three for me, and two for them.

If we're looking at players in their prime, I'd take a look at Puskas, Garrincha, Pele, Maradona, Zico, Eusebio, Duncan Edwards, Best and Cruyff, to name a few.

The Bulls of 96/97 when they went 72/10 would have been a decent side to watch. The Yankees of the early 2000s would have been a bit special to but thats all a bit off topic

News is more football than footballer.

And if any of you gave a donation to Lei Lei Gao's charity game then you have paid to see both Feverish and Cnut play.
