Should staff who refuse to get a Employer funded Flu jab be allowed to take paid sick leave when they get the flu?

Discuss.

And lo, the thread was over, and the sheep returned to whence they came.

I like tautologies because I like them.

So another issue is some people are actually allergic to the jab itself (Don't ask me what in it I am allergic to, but I had  very bad reaction one year and GP has advised to not get them as the reaction with my immune issues was worse than going without it).

I'm a big supporter of everyone who can getting it, my wife does and my daughter as well, and I encourage everyone in my office to get it as well.

I'm allergic to eggs, and have been advised not to get the vaccine, as it is made in egg culture. I'd get it otherwise. Definitely some people can't get it for medical reasons.

I hear if you get vaccinated there is a good chance you'll become quite artistic.

Read a lot about this a few years ago, mostly WHO stuff and they describe it as a scatter-gun approach and flujabs being dubious but they supported it.

Basically I've seen many people come down with bad colds and have a few days off. That's not the same as Flu. Most people will encounter Flu fairly rarely.

So no it's all HR, drug company bollocks obviously.

Well I got  me one a few months back. So far no flu, AIDS, MERS, SARS, or ebola.

Money well spent.

Still unfit as bugggery so thinking about getting another jab soon.

The point is that there is a fair amount of bullying going on when people have a bad cold, take time off They then get bollocked for not having the flu jab when they never had the flu in the first place.

It's part of a wider HR-centric control of the workplace that employers are eager to support as it undermines workers rights.

Damn I supported CND but was never a reader of "socialist worker" but these days I actually wish I'd paid more attention.

Really? I thought it was a nice gesture by the employer. No compulsion and no issues if you get flu or a cold later with or without the jab.

I work for a small, family run employer who in my opinion is more interested in the wider benefits to their employers health rather than trying to undermine an employees Sick Leave entitlements.

I simply asked the question as I jokingly told one of the younger staff members who opted against the jab that in some other countires your sick leave entitlements are waivered, knowing full well that younger staff member was very gullible and would google it!

A Dr once said that the flu jabs protects against 4 strains and it was always the 5th one that hit New Zealand.

No elaborate entrance sign, no sundeck, no hair straighteners, no curved "communications" screen.  We do have plunger coffee and some girl guide biscuits.

First winter working in Canada i did not get a flu jab and was sick on and off most of the winter. Like most others where i work.Second winter i got the flu shot and didn't have one day off.Felt great.

As we don't get sick pay at my company that is good value. Also we don't pay for the shot here.

There was some sort of employment tribunal decision a wihle back where they ruled being hungover was a legitimate reason to take a sick day, the answer then is yes - at least as far as the courts are concerned.

yep. You can't get disciplined for taking a sick day for being hungover.

You can get disciplined for poor performance as a result of turning up to work hungover.

So you're always better to call in sick!

nothing wrong with taking a duvet day or two as long as you don't exceed the 5 days sick leave in your contract.

Saying that many here are probably beuracrats - do you get 10?

Youth of today consider sick leave as a right - use it or lose it.

All I work with regularly ask how many days they have and use them a day at a time.

Is it a benefit or a right?
