Not football but...I used to play inline hockey, and due to lack of proper equipment, I played wearing a bicycle helmet instead of something more suited for hockey. I was playing defence, opposition centre had the puck behind my net, flanked by a wing, I went in for the hit. Centre dumped the puck and sharply moved away, the winger behind him didn't react in time, I was already committed to the hit, but it didn't go as planned - full facial collision. Me in a bike helmet, him with a full cage. We both hit the rink, he was fine but a little shook up an had to be checked for concussion. Me, I had a broken nose - a proper nose break mind you, not just the cartilage but also the bone around it. My lip was cut up and I lost some gum - however I didnt lose any teeth despite the stereotype of hockey players (I wasn't too concerned, I was dating a Canadian, she would have understood). There was a square foot of blood on the rink, which was promptly mopped up as I skated to the bench (with help - I had a minor concussion). Ended up needing stitches. This was years back when NZ was still the champion of that rich mans dick measuring contest disguised as a yacht race, 2003 I think.

Worst recent injury was second degree sunburn during a recent lacrosse tournament, the one at Rongotai College I promoted earlier this year. I couldn't play the second day match against Auckland and we lost by one goal. I played the first half of the first day match and we won by one goal. Was totally gutting, especially considering how much I love to play (and how rare I get to, due to lack of a local league...for now)

Injuries, eh? So far, I've had a ruptured cruciate ligament, torn medial collateral ligament, torn adductor muscle, broken ankle (which still has the pins in) and torn cartilage. just had my umpteenth knee op in November to take the last of the knackered cartilage out. I can feel the arthritis coming to get me. Still playing, coaching and refereeing tho'.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

02 was my worst year for injuries. Broke my wrist and fractured my hip in the same year. Although since last year i have had ongoing problems with my left knee, not serious enough yet to keep me out though.

Three for me, and two for them.

Back when i was 12 or so I was playing in goals for Mana reps VS Taranaki. Was a typical crappy winter day with a muddy field.  Anyway, I had a one-on-one with one of their strikers.  I dove at the strikers feet then felt a sudden sharp pain just to the side of my kneecap.

It turns out that the striker had a stray bit of glass stuck to the bottom of his boot thanks to the mud, and during the collision it cut my knee open.  So while I was on the ground in pain, one of my team mates came over and said "dale are you all right man". Then noticing the gash on my leg followed up with "oooo yukkkk".  Apparently you could see down to the bone.  So I got a nice trip in an ambulance, some good drugs and 9 stitches including 3 internal stitches.

Good times.

I think you mean "cars"?

For the record,
torn ligament knee, cycling, operation on cartilige to clip a bent piece off,
distorted vision in one eye, cricket ball (it looks like broken glass through that eye)
scar, the other knee, swimming
scars, hand and fingers, climbing
bizarre scar on the tongue from a boney piece of chicken

Am particularly proud of the last one.

I had shingles at the rather early age 20. To make things worse, this was when I worked kids holiday programs - a job I absolutely loved. Since I was carrying the chickenpox virus, I had to stay home for a week, with no sick leave. The most painful thing though? For some weird reason, I didn't feel any of the usual excruciating pain shingles is known for, I felt completely fine and able to take on the world. But I wasn't allowed to, due to the risk of infecting hundreds of kids with chicken pox.

I had my trick used against me by being distracted into trying to balance a beer can on my chin, which was really a setup for me to be punted in the balls...

I dunno if that's an "injury" per se, but I think it may be the most eye-watering thing so far...

I caught pneumonia last year.  Luckily only 1 lung got infected.  If 2 been infected I would've landed in hospital.

Lots and lots of minor head wounds, knife wounds, drunken falling over onto heater wounds etc. But my favs are;

- Bike tag on a bike with no pedals. Fell off, bike pedal spoke into calf, riiiiiip. 9 stitches.

- Drunken trampoline flips on the last day of 7th form, over-rotating and landing forehead first on metal frame. 10 stitches.

- Hit by a car crossing the road in Petone. Only hit my left leg, which got broken in 7 places. Traction for 2 months.

Speaking of scars, i have a reasonably sized one that runs along my stomach from an operation i had when i was 6 weeks old. Apparently i couldn't keep any of my food down and had i not had this operation at that time i would have died only a few days after. Funny when you think about, almost said goodbye to the earth and can't remember a thing about it.

Anyone else have near death experiences they'd like to share? Preferably ones they can remember.

Not surprised in the least at your sunburn. I was at the first Auckland game and it was crazy hot. My first lacrosse experience though and I thought it was VERY entertaining. Especially since that big lad from Auckland checked that little fellow from Wellington when he was off-balance.

I've got some x-rays of my ankle with the screws in and some interesting photos which the surgeon took while he was digging about in there.

Dunno if I'll be posting them on here tho'. Don't want to encourage you
