I read something about closer ties and part of that meaning we will now have 10 tests against them in the next 7 years. That is bugger all! Nothing to brag about there, I'd hate to think how few tests we'd have if we didn't have 'closer ties' (whatever that means).

Meanwhile they said we'd have something like 40 ODIs against them in the same period. Sigh. Cricket is going down hill fast.

Yup, just read the details of the deal. What a joke. The Big 3 are killing the long-term competitiveness of international cricket for the sake of a quick buck today. Not surprising but fudgeing disappointing.

Remember, that 10 tests in 7 years includes the 5 this summer that were already scheduled.  So what we have 'negotiated' is 5 tests in 6 years. If you inlcude the gap between those tests in 2021 and the NEXT lot, it will optimistically be 5 tests in 8 years, but could possibly be 5 tests in 10 years.

Baz tonks a casual 158* off 64 in the English T20 comp for Birmingham. Same score he got in the very first IPL match. 13 fours and 11 sixes.

how are we too nice? Is there even such a thing?

Most of the cricket world would say they're too big a bunch of cods.

Only a cock like Brad Haddin would confuse playing the game in a good spirit with "being too nice". Obviously the only way to be truly competitive is to gloat over an opponent after they've just got out in a world cup final.

We would still have been nice with Vettori and/or Boult playing the whole series and then we would have beaten them. And I feel confident saying we would have won an extended test series too.

Damn, I do wish we'd played better in that final in Aussie though. Faulkner was a bit of a secret weapon. Though Starc bloody shouldn't have been.

On the niceness front too- who is more of a dickhead- Starc or Johnson? Who is a better bowler? Aggro crap is not necessary to play good cricket.Though I did enjoy the bowling of both John Bracewell and Pat Symcox.

Harris has retired. One of the few likeable Aussie cricketers. Always came across as a decent bloke and a superb bowler too.

Pretty much the opposite of Haddin.

Three for me, and two for them.

Agree he was my favourite Australian player out of the current group. Humble guy

That knobhead Haddin dropping Root on 0 only for him to go on to make a 100 is what you call cricketing karma.

Three for me, and two for them.

I watched him drop that, was an absolute sitter for any keeper - no idea how he managed make such a meal of it (would have been nice if he did that for Taylor in the final). Said at the time I hope root goes on to score a big ton so Haddin has to suffer for every run so was good news to wake up to.

I like the majority of the Fox team who do the Big Bash. Wish CA would go with fox and dump channel 9. Never going to happen though

That just makes me wish that a) We had been given a third test against the poms; and b) that we could play test series against Australia more often.

Nice result though. I'm no England fan but even by the standards of Australian cricket teams this bunch are massive sharkcods

Shane Watson's new bat

Can't believe Watson reviewed ANOTHER two LBW decisions!  How is he not banned from using the DRS if it hits his pads?

Permalink Permalink

Brilliant stuff. We were on top at all times after the first morning. Really happy. Think the Aussies will be a bit stunned by that. They were expected to win the series comfortably. LOL at Watson too. Walk across the stumps, LBW, review. Rinse and repeat. He has to go now surely.

A great article that could well have been written yesterday, rather than almost two years ago to the day.

He should know the Laws inside and out. He should, just by feel of where the ball hits him, now know whether he is out or not. I mean his leg never moves, so he's more reliable than the blue stripe on the pitch or any weapon technology that a TV company can pay for. He is the constant.

And yet, he never seems to believe it is even possible for him to be out lbw.

Was trying to find that one earlier, remember it coming up in the last Ashes.

to be fair, could part of it just be that he's taking a punt? He's bats down the order so is usually the last recognised batsman when he gets out. I did kind of think that was the case in the second inning of this game.

He used to bat at 3, until quite recently actually. So most of his reviews wouldn't have been a case of the last batsmen gambling on it.

I said similar during the Big Bash last year Buffy... he's not at all what I expected and it's pretty clear why he was a successful captain. But his ability to break down what he's seeing and explain to the viewers some of the how's and why's behind it is quite refreshing. It's what the Channel Nine guys used to (particularly Chappelli) do in the 80's and 90's.

Now THAT'S a run chase. Thought they had let the foot off the throat on a pitch that looked trickier than first appearances.

Sodhi was excellent, we really need someone to fill that Vettori shaped void in the side for ODI/T20 and keep the run rates in check. Not sure he'll ever do that but Mattress has been poor for some time now.

Really rate Sodhi, not necessarily as a one day player just yet but as a test wicket taker. Craig admittedly is doing a sterling job at the moment but give it a year and I think Sodhi will be in the test team. Actually wouldn't mind both of them if Anderson or Neesham could stand up on the bowling front

Agreed. Limited overs bowling, especially for spinners, is about keeping it tight and keeping pressure on but wrist-spinners are just that much more likely to bowl a full toss or a rank long hop and relieve the pressure. You can afford to do that on a 4th or 5th day test pitch with runs on the board because the next ball might rip and turn, but in a T20 or ODI there's less margin for error. That's what made Vettori such a great limited overs bowler - he might not have turned it much but he had so much control he was just impossible to get away. THat pressure helped other bowlers and increased the chances of run outs too as the batsmen tried to keep the run rate up.
