Got to say, BMcC may take the headlines, and fair enough, but this game reinforces that Kane Williamson is the real backbone of our batting lineup. Crucial innings from him.

Really poor batting there. Whatever level you play at you don't leave your gloves up there to a short ball.

I think he was trying to play a ramp shot to that short boundary but it was a bit too close to him

Who cares how close it was, we won and that game will go down as one of the most amazing ODIs ever. It's a true piece of cricketing history!

I dunno, we just beat one of the other favorites, and our bowling attack is on fire. Our batsmen did throw away stupid wickets but Kane avoided the mega choke and Baz batted on with real heart. I still have faith

He was great, the only blemish being: Why the hell did he take a quick single early in that over of Starc's ? It so nearly cost us the game.

Thank god he didn't have to learn that lesson the hard way.

I know I'm old fashioned but I love the fact that with Williamson there are never any histrionics. There is none of the bellowing and leaping up and down and fist pumping that seems to be the norm now days whenever a batsmen does anything even vaguely noteworthy. After he ran down the wicket and won the game brilliantly with a six it was just a quietly clenched fist and handshakes all round. A nice contrast with the usual Aussie behaviour.

I am Australian and I predicited that outcome about 4 weeks ago.

Great game of cricket but when you put in perspective of the tournament it makes absolutely fudge all difference to where either nation plays their finals matches and I think the Aussies knew this.

Bragging rights are with NZ this time but I feel that was your final.

Disagree, 7 runs to get, 3 wickets in hand, you take that run everyday.  Southee was still to bat and he bats at 8 in test cricket.  it's not like he was batting with Chris Martin.

Kane is the most humble bloke you'll ever meet if you ever have the pleasure. And one of the most hard working to boot. McCullum has these traits too but not quite the same class. He is a great leader though. McCaw level.

Weird, i'm sure i read someone on here say something about them raving about themselves all the time.

Agreed. You'll be hard pressed to ever find 55 overs that were as highly charged and as thrilling as that was.

Some really sharkhouse batting from both teams though. It's like the T20, modern bat, short boundary slug-o-rama has meant that basic technique is sometimes forgotten in the quest for big hits. Things like getting behind the line of the ball for instance. The game has become so geared towards batsmen that they've actually forgotten how to face aggressive swing bowling when they have to.

Good job we've got Steady-the-ship Williamson.

With those rapid loss of wickets near the end, I was starting to think whether Dean Barker had given a pre-game motivational speech or if Chris Cairns was in the croud somewhere :)

The Aussies can't handle the pressure. For all their arrogance and smack-talking they're actually really mentally weak.

We squeaked in. 3 players did well, I hope the others start performing against the tougher teams. Today was a good yard stick for us. Williamson saving the blushes. Bloody nice six to win it with though. "Right off the meat of the bat" - "blow it out your arse Bill" - The 12th Man. We should have gotten him over here to do the commentaries. Heaps better than Nisbitt and Smith etc.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Haha, classic match thread post from me. But I stand by it (sort of)- we got the wobbles but we won. And I still feel that on paper the Aussies are man-for-man a better side than us. We have a better captain and a better attitude and that was the difference IMO.

Also, Vettori deserves a big chunk of the praise along with Boult, Williamson, and Baz. Just when the Aussies looked like they were getting away he tightened the screws. What a legend. Winning the World Cup would be such a fitting signoff to his career.

Who cares if we squeaked in by one wicket. We held our nerve and won it. That's massive. I'll take a one wicket win over aus any day.
Oh that's right. Sorry. I forgot that it doesn't really count unless it's a test match win over a South African - Australian hybrid team in England. And we back it up three years in a row.
You haters can go on hating. I'm going to enjoy the win.
