I'm glad they tried to get as high a NRR as possible instead of taking longer to get the total. Good to see them not batting for their averages. Wickets mean nothing at the end of the game, run rate does mean something.
We were never in danger of losing that match.
If you can chase a total like that in 25 odd overs on that pitch in Dunedin, you're showing you can adapt to all conditions. Sure, they lost wickets but at no point would they have felt they couldn't make it. Dunners, Hamilton and possibly the stadium could be slower paced pitched and I was surprised not to see N McCullum and Vettori both in the team yesterday on that surface.
While they lost more wickets than they would have hoped, they got a few valuable things out of it:
- A test on a tough pitch
- A challenge bowling first when it seems like they prefer to bat first if they can
- An outing against a team they will be very unfamiliar with
- Improved their NRR above Australia's (who have a tricky game against Bangladesh next - who are better than England IMO)
"...sure beats doin' stuff."
