Good to see they're expanding their services here... is there any reason Wellington misses out?

It's prob gonna be cheaper for me to get to Goldie/Brissy via Auck/Chch... Why aren't we getting the same services from the budget airlines bluddy ridiculous...  (and yeah, I know we get a few PB flights but that isn't very many).

They should substitute Qantas flights as they've done on a lot of routes in Oz... ppl want the cheaper fares - especially now the way things are going

I was hoping they'd come out of Wellington too, I want to go to an "Away" game but at the mo, $1,000 all up (includes accomodation) is just too much for a 2 day trip. Lonegunmen2008-10-14 09:21:29

Not so serious, but ultimately reasonably-pointed response: too windy.

Slightly more serious, equally as condescending, but potentially more accurate response: runway too short (and, no room for improvement)

Cue: aeronautical GENIUS to 'blow' my helpfully-intended response to smitherines.

I could go on...

Good logicness... although they work ok for Air Noo Zullund and Qld And Nthn Terry Air Srvs so maybe their planes are heavier? lol

Its nothing to do with the runway I wouldn't have thought. Jet Star fly 737s(?) and the airport already takes them. I dont think it can take the new airbuses and the like but i doubt a budget carrier is flying them

Err, longer runway equals heavier planes on take off, equals more fuel and  longer distances and more passengers.  Why not extend the runway again or move it all to Paraparumu.(never know how to spell that one).   So to be serious for a second, big tourist numbers need 747s/777s/A330s/A340s/A380s.  The last 747 in Wellington was a half sized stubby 747SP.
Do yourself a favour and extend the runway.

Artist's impression of extended runway at current Wellington Airport site?

Maybe they should have a ramp - *nnnnnnnnnnnnnrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE...eee..eeeeeeeeeeee...*

For some reason the Wellington International flights only seem to be 'connecting' ones - save direct to Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, and Melbourne.

Maybe saw Fiji once or twice in 4 or 5 months too...

Landing charges at Wellington Airport.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

But chief executive Bruce Buchanan said Wellington's landing charges were too high to make services to the capital viable.

The city's short runway also created some operating constraints which hit profitability.

"The airport charging regime is probably one of the worst in the country and therefore it is not one that interests me tremendously in terms of getting into it," Mr Buchanan said.

Short runway, restricts plane size + higher landing fees than anywhere else = low profits!

You were close - only missed one "a"

The problem, IIRC, is that Pram's runway is shorter than Rongotai's and since there's housing at the end of it there's no room for expansion short of compulsory acquisition. Which leads to problems in itself (see "The Castle" )

there is nmo easy, cost effective answer to the current runway sitaution in Wellington, moving ti to Palmy is dumb - too far from the main city, extending the current runway is hideously costly, reclaiming the ocean floor etc, and as Robb has pointed out the others are too small anyway.

I think the only realistic answer is to put a massive bubble over Wellington, kind-of like 'The Simpsons Movie'...

Extending into Evans Bay means the glide path too steep from Newlands.  Too expensive to extend south end ie major major earthworks & shore protection because of southerly storms.

They are planning to extend the runway further south (yes, into the Cook Strait)
It's detailed here
