Good to see this self righteous twat got arrested.

Now if rent-a-crowd could just f**k off permanently it would be even better.

I don't even understand what they're protesting? An individual tennis player (not representing any country... It's not the Davis Cup) is trying to make a living... but she can't because she's Israeli?

I 100% agree with you, She doesn't go into the media spotlight and say she supports what her country does and theres always too sides to the story it isn't just Israel, this Minto guy is  a bit of a joke.

The man is a fucking idiot...so glad he got arrested.

Also good to see Peer get through to the finals today...I only got there after the first set but I never heard any chanting aimed at her in the second and third sets (and the bunch of protesters outside looked to be pretty well marshalled by the cops too when I entered the centre).

yeah totally accurate description of both the protest and the rational behind it guys.
great stuff
we should silence all protest in fact, and accept whatever the person with the most money tells us to do. if that don't work, start shooting people, preferably terrorists.

For me, I had more sympathy for the Catholic Priest who got prosecuted for dripping red paint over the memorial to Rabin (I think it was) than the crowd at the ASB.

I thought he was targeting the right image (if not quite right with the man).

I don't see anyone saying that protesting should be banned. Rather, people are saying that this protest is grossly misguided.

Just because people have the right to protest, doesn't mean they should exercise it.

Very Ghandi-esque of you Arsenal!

Protest is a very valid form of ...um... protest! (or expression) but it serves to polarise society.

I read Minto's blog and think that he has missed the point. But of course the group's aim is not so much to ruin the young woman's tournament, but to create maximum exposure for their cause*. They are doing this very well and the casualty is this tennis player who has no direct connection with the group's issues.

Yeah it depends on what their aim is really. If their aim is to gain more publicity, they have certainly done that. If their aim is to get NZers onside, they are not doing so well.

They should lay in to the Telecommunications industry.  They spend 10's of millions with Israeli companies that have a much closer alignment to the Israeli government and military than any sportsperson.

Real big of him to single out a female tennis player

I think that is part of the reason - it creates more headline.

Whether you agree with him or not Minto is true to his beliefs and will have made a considered judgement call on this. I admire him very much for his commitment but I don't always agree with his actions.

yes, it would be more big of him to not protest whilst women and children starve, are denied freedom of movement, schooling, housing and rudimentary health services.

Who needs to agree with his actions or beliefs? It's supposedly a democratic society, lads. It's protest and dissent that will make us great and have been the catalyst for popular change that has benefited swags of society. Suffrage-Civil Rights-Gay Rights-Vietnam- Iraq- GE-Globalization-Climate Change.

all started from grass roots rent a mob dickheads. Funny that eh.

The end justifies the means?

It's knowledge and technology (acheived through education) that will make us great and afford us the luxury of dissent

Don't really agree with the arrests - people have aright to protest on public property, (yes even with loudhailers) even douchebags with a crazily tenuous link to a legitimate grievance against someone.

Is this poor women not allowed to earn a living because she is Israeli?  Should we picket Yosi Benayoun at Perennial strugglers Liverpool games to give up football?  What about Israeli garbage men - are they allowed to work Foal?

I'm not disputing his or their right to protest and I can see the publicity angle on it by singling her out.  I just think it sucks it's being heaped on a chick trying to play tennis, although she may find the same treatment when she heads to the U.A.E seeing as they barred her from last year's tournament  but must allow her to play this years tournament for the event to go ahead

Actually, like some others have mentioned here, I agree that the treatment of Palestinian's has been atrocious and is worth protesting. However, I think singling out 1 young tennis player who is simply trying to make a living is ridiculous, to point that it  negates any feelings of support that I have for his protest. I agree with a lot of the things he protests about but the ways he does it, often, truely f**ks me off.

He broke the law, despite receiving three warnings from the police who were completely fair and never attempted to stop his protest. All he had to do was turn off the megaphone.

I fully support anyones right to protest, including his (despite being pro-Israel and finding the whole protest a joke), but if you break the law while doing so, it's your own fault. He has nobody to blame but himself.

Desecrating a memorial is pretty un-classy, regardless of who it was. Yatzhik Rabin, however, was one of the most pro-Palestinian Prime Ministers Israel has ever had - in fact, he was assassinated by an Israeli because of the Oslo Accords. Seems a little like biting the hand who feeds it IMHO.

Minto is just a moron, who is really hurting the cause he is trying to help. Personally I support the cause but his tactics are creating the wrong message. Do the people he's tryi9ng to help really need to be seen as having their supporters bashing up on an individual.

Hey  Robb

I am fully supportive of the State of Israel.

I am not supportive of the wall in Gaza or other polices aimed at that group of palestinians.

I am fully aware that there are other Palestinian communities that have benefited from Israel's existence (but still experience restrictions and discrimination from the government).

The issues surrounding this that lead to the resulting actions taken by Minto and others are complex and pretty intractable IMO (I've had lengthy conversations with right wing and moderate Jewish Israelies)

Not going to indulge in this thread anymore as there is enough angst on the topic (see KFC ad thread).

Cheers

well if by politics you mean this is hardthink dhrrrrr...

cos there's plenty of politics in sport with Aussie joining the Asian confed and us getting a bit of a look in at the A-league, or all the rugby games being played in Asia or the IPL upping the stakes in cricket...

or if you mean allowing racism in sport, or one class to use sport to legitimise their institutionalised racism internationally...

sure the protest is likely to achieve little, but then again how much do most of us know about Israel and Palestine? And would we want someone else to care if Australia annexed us?

And isn't a democratic society supposed to have a low threshold when it comes to expressing an opinion and protesting?

not saying they weren't being boorish.  I wasn't there so I don't know. But do we really want cops arresting people outside a tennis match because they were participating in a non-violent protest?

Or do you only have a right to protest in NZ if you are a trucking union/lobby group and you don't want to pay for the road you are damaging?

ehhh. sorry enough already.

But I bet a few of you bagging John Minto didn't know that John Walker's gold medal (in I think it was 1976) was a soft one. His main rival didn't race. Why? Because African nations boycotted the Olympics because we played rugby matches against South Africa.

sheesh.

Any Israeli players (Benayoun perhaps) keen to sign for the 'Nix? we could do with the extra crowd numbers...

I just hate the fact than an Israeli player who doesn't present any Israeli views and is jsut there to play sport get's targeted. That's my issue with this.

I love politics, but I don't think it should be forced on sports people who want nothing to do with it. However if they want to use their position to influence their political views then they deserve to get it given back to them.

John Minto - dial-a-cause and he'll be there. He and trevor richards were involved in that other protest group, Fight All Racist Tours back in the 70's. Or was it HART? Same thing. and as said, it attracks all the dial-a-protester crew. same old types that look like they're either on a sickness benefit or an un-employment benefit. you never see any blue collar or suit and tie types supporting these "Causes". I'm just surprised Honi didn't make time. i mean the whole of the middle eastern problem would be solved if that female tennis player didn't come to NZ.

Get a f**ken life Minto you Minty Ad.

what dial a protester crew? who are these people? why would having protesters in suits and ties give any movement credibility? do you need a man in a suit and tie to tell what is right and true?

and for what it's worth HART was unequivocally proved right, despite the men in suits and ties happy to pay tax for the cops to crack heads

one of the main problems with democracy is not protests, it's the commentators who simply lack the ability to ascertain the protests value and simply gauge it on it's most prominent spokesperson. Such lack of political analysis and unwillingness of genuine inquisitiveness is supported in the main by a compliant and bought and paid for media. Why delve into the issues when certain members of the public have pre-decided it's Minto so it's not appropriate/worthy?

I think Minto is a knob, and I love sport (I even watch rugby) but I would have been one of many people (including blue collar and shirt and tie workers) heavily involved in HART had I been born and old enough at the time. As stated before LG, what do sickness and unemployment beneficiaries look like?
