Or if you're after something localish in the Tom Waits/Leonard Cohen vain, I highly recommed Delaney Davidson.  I think he's based in Wellington these days after living in Switzerland for a number of years.

Just came back from Laneway in Auckland. Foals were amazing pity you're not getting them in Welly.

But Yeasayer are awesome. Ladyhawke is top and so are Blonde Redhead & Deerhunter.

So slap on your Wayfarers, turn up your shorts, jeans, or even capris. lace up your black canvas sneakers and go.

Loved it aye, 'Spanish Sahara' nears on orgasmic. Loved rocking to Balloons, Red Socks Pugie, Olympic Airways and Antidotes stuff too. Yannis gets the crowd into it too.

I'm currently driving the wife mad with this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4Ng1zHselU and this  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQbD47glYcg&feature=related

Pity youtube don't have Ancient Watery Gods from the album Striped Paint for the Last Post which is my Fav Moon Wiring Club song.

It's been described as  Hauntology and there are a couple of other bands with very similar styles from the Ghost Box label  http://www.ghostbox.co.uk/home.htm

The Arcade Fire's album 'The Suburbs' won the Grammy for Album of the year (although lost to the Black Keys for Alt Album of the year). Rather interesting, since they don't feature heavily on the charts. But top quality album

It may be a bit too mainstream (and girly) for you lot, but I am loving the new Adele album at the moment.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

I picked up a compilation CD of various South African music last year.  Still not tired of it.

Some of the groups/artists are:

Mango Groove (Pennywhistle)
Sipho Mabuse (Jive Soweto)
PJ Powers (Wozani)
Lucky Dube (Come Together)

Can anyone out there reccomend other songs by these artists or other SA groups worth a listen?

(If you suggest Clout with their song "Substitute" I will hate you)

I was excited when I saw the new song "Dont sit down because I moved the chair" Then I heard it.
Not the arctic monkeys I used to love.

Maybe the old coot isn't so bad after all - The Beatles (Ying Tong much better then their other hit "I'm walking backwards for Christmas") and Big Country.

Just finished watching some great mindless violence (xxx; the next level) and thought I heard some PE - Fight the power. Also this was the music for the closing credits.

Falls Festival for you EN? New Year '12 in Victoria Australia? Or Tazzie or even Southbound in WA?

Arctic Monkeys and Fleet Foxes and also Tim Finn (You a fan?) at all these Festivals.

I really hope the Arctic Monkeys come to NZ then, BDO again... nah rather a dedicated concert

Sounds good, although how I'll get that money in time...

Yeah, think they would be loads better in a more intimate place (like the Power Station?) rather than a packed out stadium like BDO. But still!

Doloras mentioned Kate Bush in another fred so I took a trawl down mammary lane on the interweb and found this: http://onlybootleghere.blogspot.com/2007/11/kate-bush-1976-phoenix-recordings.html

Greatly enjoyed her first three albums.  She drifted out of public view for a few years so never got back into her later on.

Kate Bush is considered one of the greatest female recording artists and her 5th album Hounds of Love is truly amazing and the only album I have ever owned that I never get bored of.

After the Red Shoes 7th 1993, she left her partner, found another and had a child and wanted to give her son a normal life. She lost significant family members also so did withdraw until 2005 with Ariel.

However her influence is truly epic. Women singer/songwriters are pretty common these days. When Kate Bush started in the late 70's it was a different matter.

Hounds of Love should be in everyone's music collection.
