The Lemonheads, The Dickies, Cheap Trick and Shonen Knife all coming soon. It's a power-pop-punk tsunami.

probably a little bit..........um..............not traditionally punk enough for most of you in this thread, but went to see Sigue Sigue Sputnik on Saturday night. Tiny little place (about 100 people there) and it only seemed to be the lead singer with a load of young guys as opposed to the original line up,  but it was decent.

Why say that Tony James the bassist was in some great bands? Sigue Sigue Sputnik certainly had their moments as well.

So I'm guessing it is Martin Degville who is still on board?

I knew of Tony James from Generation X, but he wasn't playing the other night.  My statements on them being possibly not traditionally punk enough for some of the people in this thread was more to do with the fact that they seemed more novelty punk to me, what with the outfits and pantyhose on their faces (the reason I became interested). I really don't know enough about the genre to know of their standing within the punk community, and thought that if I posted in this thread that I went to see the punk band Sigue Sigue Sputnik that I would get battered for daring to suggest that they are a real punk band. I vaguely remember some comments in here that were pretty disparaging about Green Day, and didn't want the cred that I had worked so hard to build up shot straight down.

I just always remember them as a rip-off of the slightly earlier Specimen, maybe rip off is too strong as both bands were all part of the Batcave scene.

Termy and HH would be able to shed more light on it.

Anyone go to Stiff Little Fingers at Bodega last year? Probably the best gig in a long while for me. Jake Burns still the same vocals after all these years!

I err on Frankie Mac's rationale : I simply remember them as a glammed sex pistols affair. Anyhoo, I was entrenched in metal when they were kicking about

SSS were alright but I would call them a new-wave band rather than punk is all. They're one of those more mainstream punk/new-wave bands who then get people into some other stuff so it's all good. And as a fan of GWAR I'm not going to slag them off for dressing up. Love Missile F1-11 was also in Ferris Buellers Day Off which is about as good as it fudgeing gets.

As for Green Day - I still love Green Day, especially those first three LPs (incl. Dookie - quality record). They were the American Buzzcocks back then. Not quite as enamoured with their later stuff but there are still many good songs on albums like Nimrod and American Idiot (along with some dross).

As a long-time fan of SLF I was pleasantly surprised at just how good that gig was. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Haha that's funny because I was too. Seems the road of metal tends to lead to punk at some point.. Still lots of metallers I know would sport Mohicans etc. Punk and metal are easy bedfellows.

Sure are. I could even pin the shift to one momentous recording: Napalm Death's 'Scum'. It had the extremity of metal I was listening to, but the politics (and DIY aspect) of Punk.

I'm in as well. See you there.

Can't quite believe they're playing at Valhalla (although it is the spiritual home of all things metal in Wgtn). Surely those two bands could command a bigger venue? It is a Tuesday night I suppose.

my crew cut at 10 yrs old earned me the nickname Buster, that stuck for the next 6 yrs (even if the haircut was only revived 30 yrs later). Great band that put on an awesome show in a 1992 freshers week.

See you at valhalla, I am seriously looking forward to it.

Will do. And Bullion, make yourself known to us two old gits. We're mature enough not to worry that your allegiance  is to the wrong side of north london!

no allegiance to any club in london.

Didn't see this earlier so didn't look out for you guys, really enjoyed it. Have the new album and the most of the new songs come across really good live.

So gutted that the whole soundwave thing went down like it did. Some good punk bands were coming to NZ off the back of it including the mighty Refused, definitely one of the bands on my bucket list and one that I never thought I'd get to see live. Supposed to be coming back later in the year though.
