Does anyone know if there is a legal limit to how many times you can go round a roundabout? A mate of mine just got a sizeable fine for this (cops were tipped off by a member of the public) on the grounds of operation of a motor vehicle causing annoyance. Going round a roundabout 3 or 4 times doesn't seem to equal a 600 buck fine to me.

bl00dy hell! That's an expensive lesson. I guess the MOP NARK didn't have a sense of humour unless it was during peak hour traffic.

It was at 11:30 at night in Feilding, small rural town. Not exactly rush hour!! Its madness, think we've got a fairly strong case for it.

True, unless they were screeching tyres. But I can understand how you feel.

Well in the movie European Vacation - Clark Griswald when round the roundabout at the Champs Elysees for most of the day (he couldnt turn out of the traffic).
Perhaps that could help your defence.

It's only an offence if you cuase an inconvenience to someone else, sounds like the complainant is the bigger nusiance.

sounds like the cops were short on the weekly quota as well, i mean to be rung by a member of public and get to the scene of the crime all in the space of you boys doing 3-4 turns around the round about. they were either just down the road at the fish n chippie or your 3-4 turns were done at snails pace

The complainants followed us and we were ages away from the roundabout when we got pulled up. We weren't screeching tyres, weren't driving at an excessive speed round the round about.

Same thing happened to Homer Simpson when they went to London. He wasn't fined, although he had a crash with the Queen's coach later on.

Even if it is an offence...$600 is very very steep for something so undangerous and such a stupid thing to be fined for...

Thats way more than speeding fines even

I feel sorry for ya mate. I got $20 towards your fine if you want it!! Just PM me with the details. Thats a problem today, no one knows how to laugh anymore for fear of not being PC. Personally, I would've laughed at you guys going round the roundabout.

$600 is ridiculous for such a little offence. Especially at the time of day. It was a bit like the time my dad got a ticket for driving a few K's over the limit at 4 in the morning on the Petone Esplanade. Silly policeman being up at that time of the morning anyway, we were probably the only car he'd seen for a few hours.

Yeah, fair enough, but I thought a warning would have been better rather than a fine of $60ish

Do you have the name of the exact infringement listed on the ticket and fine info etc? My dad is a lawyer for Land Transport and has been with them or the MOT constantly for the last 19 years, he's had to sign off on pretty much every traffic law out there and he can't actually remember ever seeing that name for an offence. He's suggested the officer has actualy made up the offence, he says it should have been 'careless and inconsiderate' driving and a date in court (where you probably would have got a fine of less than 600 I'm sure)

7.3 Unsafe vehicles and loads

(1) A driver must not operate a vehicle in a condition or manner that causes
or is liable to cause---

(a) injury to any person or animal; or

(b) annoyance to any person; or

(c) damage to any property; or

(d) distraction to the driver.

Sadly it seems the fine is correct legally, seems pretty damn stupid for the cop to go for it though.

I think the fine is way over the top...

And having annoyance in the same category as causing injury is just stupid.

Seems like a boyracer crackdown law, hence the high fine, and annoyance factor.

Think you have a good case to get off it though...you werent doing any of the above...you were giving the cop something to do,not annoying him!

All sounds a bit harsh to me.

Bit sad though, if a good night out in Fielding is driving round the local roundabout over and over again.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

guy who was driving was 17. wasn't really for enjoyment, we were being indecisive basically. of course it wasn't the smartest thing to do but 600 bucks is really a bit much.
