But if her cousin was beheaded by a group of white people, she wouldn't hate all white people would she?
New Zealanders are more racist when things aren't going well for them and need someone to blame. ie immigrants taking their jobs etc. I was dreading the fallout if NZ hadn't qualified for the world cup. I would like to think the majority of kiwis would have been gracious in defeat, like Mr Bahrain was, but in reality it would be a different story.

I saw this great French Canadian movie a cpl of years ago called Steel Toes.
Its about a montreal white supremist who truely hates all non whites and believe that Jesus Christ will return after society is cleansed of all impure races, including Jews, who he believes are spawns of Satan. One day he takes out his anger on a Hindu East Indian grievously injuring him so that he is hospitalized but passes away. The supremist is arrested and lodged in a cell. He is unable to afford a lawyer, and one is appointed for him. But the lawyer is jewish and as unhappy at taking the case is as his client. The movie shows how the lawyer uses a defence of how many unemployed white males in canada are struggling and live just off starvation level so that they understandably grow a hate towards immigrants who they see as stealing their jobs. It was really interesteing and had the lawyer slowly starting to feel sympathy for the neo-nazi while the supremist was conflicted as discovered the lawyer/Jew wasn't an animal like he'd been bought up to believe
One of my all time fave movies is a Danish flick called Adam's Appler and its a black black comedy about a Neo-nazi getting out of prison and having to live in a halfway house run by a crazy priest who forgives everything including violence against himself
And last night I finally saw The Boy in the Striped Pajamas which while sad I have to say I found way overated as is kind of concentration-camp lite for the masses
the first 2 movies give a good view of both sides of racism - the victim and the perpatrator. the last one shows how people can try and make themselves unaware of whats going on around them

Yeah probably not.
I thought that too about the Bahrain game. Met a group of Bahraini fans in McDonalds afterwards and they looked absolutely Gutted but they still smiled and spoke to us. If we'd lost I wouldn't have gotten all anti-Bahraini on everyone but I doubt I'd have smiled, shook hands and said that their lot were the better team. Credit to them.
Those movies sound interesting, SK. I've seen Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - it was quite good, but struck me as ludicrous how easily Bruno got into the concentration camp.

I didn't dislike Boy in the Pajamas but I've heard people rave about how it changed their lives and how they cried all the way through it. These are usually ignorant people who really seem to have previously been oblivious to just how bad the camps were. A way better movie is Playing with time a true story about a jewish violinist who was forced to play concerts for guards within the camps

I wonder if there's anything to the theory? Do teams require at least one anal retentive white dude, with a sensible haircut and a stick up his butt, to marshall an army of players who get by on instinctive flair and feel for the game? Every ounce of my being wants to dismiss it as racist rubbish, but when it comes down to it, the guys professing this theory are infinitely more qualified to make the call.

Ok just re-read the question for the poll, it's dodgier than the anti smacking referendum.

If there's any truth to that theory it's only because stupid racist f**kwits like Haden and Laidlaw have contributed to it becoming systematically institutionalised over many years. If all an eight year old youngster ever hears from a coach is "you're brown so we'll stick you in the loose" or "you're white so we'll stick you at first five" then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. And then you get morons like Haden and Laidlaw pointing to it as evidence that they're right!

The very notion that Pakeha don't have a culture is ridiculous and frankly offensive. Our history is short and diverse, but I believe there are traditions and aspects to our way of life which define our culture. Not everyone may subscribe to every part of it, from barbeques to Saturday sports but that doesn't mean there is no Pakeha culture. And just because we share a lot of our traditions with the likes of Australia and the UK doesn't mean we have no culture. Maori culture is in many aspects not very dissimilar to other Polynesian cultures. There is certainly no time limit to when a people can claim they have a "culture", sure some cultures may be richer than ours, but we have one nonetheless. To think otherwise is to be some sort of cultural-supremacist, rating your ethnicity's shared history over others. Who I am is largely determined by the country of my birth and its traditions, as well as my family's 170 year history in this country. Compared to the age of most countries, that is not a hell of a lot shorter than Maori have been here. I think there is such a thing as a shared Pakeha experience. Did we learn nothing from Michael King?

Well said. You don't need to have cultural dances, a completely unique language or anything else to have a culture.

"English journalists, in particular, are often heard whingeing as only
they know how. Two Pommie scribes came to blows yesterday at the boxing." <-- That is the second to last paragraph and if that's what you call racist then I'd say your definition of the term is far too loose.

Personally, I think if you have far too loose a definition of racism then racism will be all we hear about and people will just be over it and as such won't be nearly as disgusted as they should be when legit cases arise. Maybe that's just me.

Exactly. The worst racism should be fought the hardest. Comparing stuff like that to people getting beaten up or worse just patronises the victims.
I like tautologies because I like them.

If it potentially causes more harm than good (due to apathy) then I don't think it's necessarily a good idea.
There are already enough racist dramas happening and some of them are serious and some are such tosh. The last thing we need is more insignificant (and probably not racist at all like the paragraph you put up) ones. I mean that whole thing about Eskimo lollies - what a waste of time, who really cared?

"Eskimo" is considered an ethnic slur by most Inuit in Canada and Greenland (but not in the USA). Is using the name in NZ intentionally racist? No, because (due to lack of knowledge rather than deliebrate racism) Eskimo is incorrectly considered an acceptable term in NZ. Is it a big issue? No, because you'd have trouble even finding an Inuk in New Zealand, let alone one who cares enough to make an issue of it. There's a good argument for it being racist, but it's not necessarily a sign of evil and not necessarily a problem unless Allens plays to expand to Nunavut.

You make a good point with this, in southeast Asia (notably Hong Kong) there's a certain shade of brown that's modified by a word starting with the letter N that I'm not going to type out fully. That's not considered a racist term over there (well, the word itself might be depending on context, but the color is just a normal color).
