Awesome result, I reckon they can hold on to it for one week more than the last time. Now if QPR & the Nix win tomorrow, it'll be a perfect weekend!

Great performance tonight, to be fair thought that performance was an indication of how much better Wellington are. If it had been close it wouldn't have been a reflection of the strengths of those two teams.
Good week ahead in Wellington

Imagine if Tasman win next week. If there looking for a case to keep them in the competition then having the shield at the end of the season could be there solution. Anyway what a result so happy we finally have it again.

Congrats boys, always good to see teams break a drought! I'd love to see Canterbury get the chance to challenge for it, now that would be a game!

Tasman wont exist next season, bother Marlbrough & Nelson want to go their seperate ways. If Tasman won the shield, it'd go into limbo. canterbury will win the shield if Steve Walsh has anything to do with it!

Fully deserved by the welly boys, great performance, shame about Piri's kicking though could have blown the score out a bit more to really rub it in.

I remember that game Robb. And BOP put a chip through in the final play but Ben Blair just got there first and grounded it. Right?

Huge reception at the airport for the Lions. Must have been a few good hundred people there.

Indeed. Gut wrenching stuff haha.

For some reason I remember that easily.

And the sad thing was that the BOP player who was chasing (Delany maybe?), his new born child had died just a few hours before the game.

Yet you still avoid the question regards losing to Manawatu? blocked that out of your mind have you?
Cantebury in the NPC in the last 5 or 6 years have a pretty poor record, one championship in 04 and that would be the only final they have been in for a while as well.

Since the turn of the century Canterbury has won 2 NPC/ANZC's, Auckland 4 and Wellington and Waikato one a piece.

Will also mention that we've held the shield for around 2 or more seasons on 2 seperate occasions (23 wins and 14 wins) since 2000.Gangsta!2008-09-21 16:26:13

Official victory parade is down for Tuesday lunch time:

NEWS RELEASE
20 September 2008

Tuesday parade to welcome Shield heroes

The heroic Vodafone Wellington Lions and the Ranfurly Shield - will be paraded before adoring Wellingtonians in a lunchtime parade along the Golden Mile on Tuesday 23 September.

Acting Wellington Mayor Ian McKinnon says the parade will offer the perfect chance for Wellingtonians to welcome the Shield back after 26 years absence - and pay tribute to the team.

Tonight's game was one of the great tough Shield challenges - the Lions overcame some terrible pressure from Auckland in the first half.

"By holding the parade on Tuesday rather than Monday it'll just give Wellingtonians a little more time to get over the fact that the Shield is back in the Capital - and to prepare for a rousing reception."

The parade will start at 12.45pm outside the old Government Buildings at the north end of Lambton Quay, head along the Quay, into Willis Street and Mercer Street and end at Civic Square just after 1pm.

Cr John Morrison, the Councils Economic Development and Recreation Portfolio Leader, says the Lions performance tonight has ended 26 years of psychological torment in the Wellington Region.

I know that Council staff this week went looking for local people with experience in organising Shield victory parades in the Capital but found that most have either sadly passed on, or are in rest homes.

However I know Wellingtonians will be out in force on Tuesday and itll be a parade to remember.

In our heart of hearts weve always known the Wellington Lions are far and away the hardest and most entertaining provincial side in the country. Now the long dark years of paranoia and self-doubt are over. Life is good and we are content.

...ends

I'm part-Tasmanian(?)

Would be a great laugh seeing what the NZRFU would do.

Plus we don't....

Next week is final round, then onto playoffs - which have no shield.

I did add the question mark...

I've lived half my life here and half in Nelson.

Support Canterbury more though cause I live and was born here.

Why isn't it up for the finals? I thought teams could challenge at any time? This bloody split round stuff is crap, the top two teams (Canty and Welly) won't meet (in theory) until the finals. GAY.

I'm over it, Warriors gets my rugby attention for now

yep i was there- 20-30 thousand- hard to judge. the city stopped worked for an hour, literally

hardened parade veterans said it was a unique vibe-different to 7's cos it was celebrating a victory.

good fun
