So we're having a discussion about what song identifies NZ to outsiders.
As an example, Australia would be Men at Work - Down Under or John Farnham - You're The Voice.
Go team.

Er...Crowded House...was a big hit in the U.S...
But everyone thinks they are Australian - thankfully.
What's our "anthem"? Like I know those others are quintessential but not really anthems I don't think.

A lot of Kiwi bogans think this is greatest thing ever...
Concord Dawn's cover of Slayer's "Raining Blood"?
People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.
Funnily the first time I went to Europe I spent some time traveling around Russia, the first night we were there we were hanging out at someones apartment and they were watching a Russian soap, I didn't understand what it was about but in a romantic scene the background music was anchor me by the mutton birds, on the last day I was there I caught the train from St Petersberg to Latvia and they were playing don't dream it's over by crowded house on the train, which I thought was kind of a funny coincidence to bookend my trip.
Of course no one knew they were kiwi tunes.
As far as Kiwi Anthems, I think Home Again by shihad is the quintessential Wellington anthem, seeing as it's about returning to Wellington and all. I always thought it should have been the Fever song before kick off.
What is rated as NZ's best song is Nature from the Formyla penned by Wellington's own Wayne Mason (later of the Waratahs).
April Sun in cuba was a reasonable hit internationally for Dragon.
Six months in a leaky boat, and history never repeats by split enz were both the lead singles off of top 50 US albums.
The songs that people know from NZ are undoubtedly how bizarre and don't dream it's over. The biggest selling NZ artist of all time is the guy that makes pianos by candlelight...
Actually it has to be Royals. I was visiting a friend in Vancouver when it was number 1 over there and it was insanely everywhere. We even went to a local venue to watch some eclectic punk and a few of the bands got together at the end to cover it.
