I'd rather people got tasered than shot at ... I'm a bit concerned over how accurate they are - say, in a domestic, the man is grabbing the woman; is it accurate enough to only take out the guy?

Better than giving our police guns fulltime......and the sh*t they face every day and every night on every shift now they need more protection and help. This is a form of weapon that scares the be-jesus out of offenders when a cop is telling them to put down the knife/bat/club and gives them some assistance in the fight against the ever increasing crime rate in our community.
I know if someone burgled my Mum or assaulted my Sister I'd like them to be tasered......twice!!

Better than taking a life although shooting an offender does break that offenders offending cycle and ensures it doesn't repeat.
however, in all seriousness, I am all for them. The do gooders complain that 11 people died from their use in the USA. but how many times have they actually been used? the numbers suggest thats actually not too bad. After all, they wouldn't be used if the crim just gave up to the Police instead of trying their luck.

True, not such a bad idea considering the complete lack of remorse shown by offenders whom have comitted murders in the last 15 years in New Zealand. Todays generation of murderers seem to have a "I don't give a f**k" type attitude and value nothing, not even the sanctity of life. they seem happy enough to take someone else's so why not lose their own??
Sorry dude, this should be on another thread but tasers offer a lot better outcome for the offender than an armed defenders bullett.
Again I say, if offenders give up when caught instead of trying it on wth the police then the taser wont be used. It's not a draw taser then fire then ask questions society here in NZ. The Taser is used in seriously threatening situations only.

Well Keith f**king Locke, we'll just have to issue the police with guns instead. They already have them anyway. You always see them on TV carrying M16 assualt rifles & bullet proof vests and that's just the constables let alone the Armed Offenders Squad. Better they get incapacitated than shooting & killing them. Apparently, just showing the taser & "arching" them make the offenders surrender.

yup, give the cops something to knock the crims of their feet without having to engage in some hand to hand melee! its about time they cops got some form of offence.

TBH the only people that should care as to whether or not cops have tasers are those likely to be getting into trouble. Personally i've got my eyes set on a clean record, maybe using diversion once but only if its a quality, news worthy prank, but if the cops come there is no way i'd give them an excuse to use it!
Bottom line, if you don't run they won't use it.

I have some issues both for and against tasers. One things that nags me is that tasers aren't seen as lethal force. Gun in hand, you know you squeeze the trigger the target may die so so caution comes in to the issue. Tasers in hand the level of caution about pulling that trigger changes.

thing is though, in American cops are armed to the teeth, yet America has more violent crime than here.

...don't count on that. It's possible (personal experience) to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I see Michael Bott is trying to make a name for himself as a humanitrian and human rights person. but he made a BIG credibility mistake today when he said people are going to die as a result of Taser use, Old people and people with pace makers will die.
Well Michael, FFS, Old people with heart conditions/pace makers are not out there breaking the law in such violent/threatening ways that require an armed or taser response. The police are not going to go driving around and tasering people for the hell of it. You sounded like a very cheap politician with your comments as reported on the radio today.
It is the young/middle aged persons high on Meth or dope or alcohol or any combo in the middle of violent acts towards to public and or police whom will get tasered only after they have been warned. Tasers are to be a last resort. Do your homework Mr Bott. Perhaps your Legal Aid fees might increase??

no im just saying, in terms of rehabilitation as a method to deal with criminals worldwide. it has been proven to not work, certainly nowhere near to the level that people like foucault had imagined when they started inventing the modern prison system. so really we are putting up with it until something better comes along. wouldnt say it's any more effective than the death penalty.

I agree. The reality is that crime will exist as long as there's poverty on one side, and huge profit margins on the other side of the crime spectrum. Unless you eliminate these, crime will still be around regardless of whether you adopt a rehabilitative or draconian punishment approach.
To mitigate effects of crime, you really need to target its source, but that's easier said than done. Until we figure out how to deal with that, we'll have to put up as you say.
