Trevor Gatfield of Grant Plumbing:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/education/69960078...

But not everyone goes to university, and not every job requires graduates. Is NCEA telling employers what they need to know about potential new hires?

"I don't give a f... about qualifications," said Trevor Gatfield of Grant Plumbing, who often hire school leavers.

While they put a lot of weight on prior experience, attitude was key.

"Are they willing to get their hands full of shark?" he said.

This is right to a point. Attitude should always trump qualifications. On the other hand I remember having to give quite a bit of maths tutoring to my old flatmate who left school in 6th form, and was trying to pass his papers to become a qualified plumber. So the idea that people with the right attitude can just leave school and find a trade job without worrying about literacy/numeracy skills is not 100% true either.

I think the people who don't like school and drop out then become successful usually have the ability to learn things they missed at school as they come across them. Some don't and won't ever either.

Lol.

Reminds me of a time about 20 years ago when I was briefly employed as a plumber's assistant in a Kings X house reno (used syringes everywhere). I was wearing heavy gloves but my boss was bare-handed, and despite the open scratches on his hands he went about clearing mounds of shark from the blocked drains with gusto. I suggested he should be wearing gloves too. "Mate, when you've been handling shark long as me, you're just about immune to everything."

Yeah, right.

Haven't played for years, since lessons in the 3rd form (30 yrs ago) - just the occasional bit of noodling here and there.

On a spur of the moment about 18 mths ago got a cheap strat and amp from the RS (as you do) and had the odd garage session mucking around... then about a month ago I dropped it and munted the electronics... the hankering since had gotten strong so off I went in search of a bargain - did some research, found out the RS are dumping their Vintage stuff as the brand hasn't taken off here (despite rave reviews o/seas) so off I went... a few stores later and the Vintage's didn't really gel (LP's) but two Tele's were rather awesome for some reason (nfi what - they just "felt" great, to me) as did the $1800 American strat (of course).

So I pulled my head out of my arsenal and chose one... $850 later and now I'm looking for someone/where to get a couple of lessons so I can step it up (and yes, I know there's heaps online but I'd prefer to get some actual direction from someone who knows what they're doing - and what I should be) before I go too far down the rabbit warren.

I'm in the thriving metropolis of Lower Hutt... funny about the P bass Foal... THE BEST guitar neck I've ever had the pleasure of playing with (and I use that term VERY loosely) was on a Squire Fretless Jazz... the two Tele's I tried (crafted in the big C) were a clear and definite second! (but still felt much better than anything else I've felt, south of a couple of grand).

Isn't language brilliant?

I stumbled across this earlier today:

And now have just heard this on National Radio:

http://www.radionz.co.nz/audio/player/201762025

And both of them reference the 1980s minx Karyn Hay - who won a Frank Sargeson Fellowship in 2004 (for writers).

That could equally apply to why people don't watch the Nix as oppose to watching LA Galaxy.?
