I've just watched TV1 news, or most of it. The lead story in the whole bulletin - not just Sport - was about some All Black t**ser - who I've never heard of - not getting kicked out of the team, or something similar. It was all to do with him getting pissed and doing something stupid.
Who f**king cares? If you must, put it on the Sports news, fair enough, but leading the whole news?. Give me a break! Give us a break!
For God's sake, we've got a general election a matter of months away, some murderer somewhere had been arrested, another 7 year old murder looks like it has been solved after an arrest, and worldwide the tyrannical Mugabe is in a meeting with the other African governments and still being tolerated by most of the world in spite of killing thousands and rigging elections, and the Us are a few months off electing their first ever black President. And what do we get? f**king rugby.
i'm not just ranting because it's rugby, although God knows I loathe the game, I'd be ranting if it was any sports story. There is far more important stuff happening in the world than this. The media treats us like we are a nation of morons, mainly because so many of us consistently prove to them that they are right.
I'm still shaking my head in disbelief.
What's the bet TV3 led with the same story?

TV3 is pretty bad as well, I avoid both these days. Prime isn't so bad given it's only 30 minutes so they tend to put the most important stuff in but its not great.

Almost ALL media in NZ is far beyond the south side of sh*t. My mum just got back from Montreal and commented on how fantastic their news was in Canada, with genuine experts giving opinion (not just quoting whichever minister is involved with a particular issue) and also making free comment on the politics of issues. Here its a sin to suggest there could be anything wrong with government. The amount of fluff stories also does my head in.

I HATE the fact the news plays a sports story first, then expand on it in the "sports news", where the f**king story belongs in the first place
I like tautologies because I like them.

I'm glad someone else noticed. I watched TV3 news and it was 13 minutes of that clown half back coverage, followed by 20 seconnds on a murderer arrested and then 2 minutes on Mugabe. Then the sports news was just as bad and basically a repeat of the first 13 minutes. Lonegunmen2008-07-01 21:31:31

Cullen invented "smug". I hate the condescending way he talks to us, in a "I know what's best for you all" sort of way.
Still I can put up with smug politicians more than I can deal with this country's rugby obssession at the moment. My hated of rugby and the kiwi mentality that goes with it has reached new levels tonight.

Thats the way Helen seems to speak sometimes as well though she's a damn good politician. Imagine it will be similar with Key, along the lines of 'you've all been mislead over the last 9 years.'

I dislike the rugby obsession as well, can't we just be really obsessed about pretty much ALL sports, like the Australians?

Also, Colin Meads was 3rd in a poll of most trusted NZers. He actually fronted a campaign for one of those finance companies that went bust and all!

If we ever need proof they're two-faced liars, there you go! It's not like it's news however, what also isn't news is that the average kiwi is either too apathetic or simply too stupid to realise whats going on. I am personally very skeptical that we really are the 3rd-least corrupt nation in the world or whatever it is.

I think it's brilliant (well, quite sad actually, just funny) that the Minister of Finance sees no connection between an 8 billion dollar surplus and tax cuts.  I mean I don't even pretend to understand economics and I can see a connection that sticks out like a sore thumb. loyalgunner2008-07-01 21:49:38

I quite like at the end how Helen Clark said she didn't want to see smacking banned. Now, there are issues where situations and the information availiable change and it changes politicians minds (it actually gets my goat when MPs are criticised for changing their stance for a good reason. Its in fact a good thing, do we want to get f**ked over because the gvmt was worried about getting crucified for changing their mind?) but surely child discipline is an issue a woman in her 50's should have a solid stance on?

I don't think you need to be a parent to have a stance, in fact she said in that quote that stopping smacking was like preventing human nature.

He also has a past that will one day come back to haunt him. At the moment it is all protected by court order and so even those that know about it can't blab, but one day it will all come out. The very fact that he is still allowed to have such a high profile - the powers in the media are surely aware of his, um, indiscretions - says it all about the country we live in. Some people are just considered to be bigger than New Zealand itself.

Forgot to mention that last week TV1 news actually had an item on about Britney Spears' sister having a baby. I kid you not. Simon Dallow must have been cringing inside as he read it. They carry on with crap like that, and they'll lose him. He's the best newsreader NZ's had for years, but his intellect is wasted on just reading other people's idea of news.

Nice thread Jamster! I've lost count of the number of times I've been watching the news and turned to my (Kiwi) wife and said things like "How f****d up is this country when, with all that's going on, the lead story on the news is about Dan Carter's underwear".

Been a constant source of irritation since I moved here.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Aussie is much the same... just a third network to give another option... and they do have have the ABC there as well to give you the actual news, rather than some muppet's idea of same or a thinly veiled attempt to promote whoever they'd paid the $$$$$ to for the 'exclusive' interview which is what you get on the other three (plus SBS I s'pose, which is great for international news). What we need is some half-hour show in late primetime like that american Entertainment Tonight show.

Having a 8 billion dollar surplus doesn't mean that there is an extra 8 billion dollars to spend.  This figure doesn't take into account debt repayment.  Thanks to a certain govt in the 1990's govt debt has been extremely high.  However since labour has been in govt, they have used some of the surplus to reduce debt to a more manageable level.  So 8bn isn't 8bn.  It's a lot less.

Smacking isn't banned.  This is another example of TV journalist being craptacula by naming it a anti-smacking bill.  It isn't.  It's a bill to prevent parents from using section 59 of the crimes act to get away with seriously abusing kids and claiming it was for corrective behaviour.

But back to the topic.  I too think Tv news is very sh*tty.  I generally stick to listening to morning report and checkpoint on national radio.  They spend far more time than just 30 seconds on a new item.

Yeah, it was more of a friendly jibe I was going for. You're right, the media misrepresents a heck of a lot of stuff, everyone gets fooled at some point. You're also right about the debt.

Can we just get back to hating the media and the moronic majority that they cater to here in NZ? Y'know, the rugby following, golf playing, yacht watching fishing enthusiasts that seemingly make up 99% of this country's population. That's more fun. Start talking party politics and there'll never be a winner.
And please remember the maxim "whoever you vote for government wins". TheJam2008-07-02 11:07:49

Noticed that the other day. I've always ignored the Business section and just gone straight to Sport, then skim over News and World. Read the Business section out of boredom one day and thought exactly the same thing.

Agree fully with your comments about Simon Dallow. He also gets another plus for seemingly hating Tony Veitch - last week, Dallow was hosting the TV1 breakfast show, and their reporter somehow mentioned the names of all the seven dwarfs in the course of a story...10-15 minutes later, what's-her-name blondie hosting the show tried to recount the names of all the dwarfs, but came up with only 6...she goes, 'who's the seventh one?' to Simon Dallow, and he goes, 'Tony Veitch'.
I couldn't stop laughing the whole day.
