Two New Nix fans - we finally made it to New Zealand!

After what seemed like an endless waiting game to get launched from Toronto, we've finally arrived in Auckland.  We'll be heading to Napier on April 5th and look for a place to live. We've got accomodation sorted for three weeks there, hopefully we can find something more permanent during that time.

Really hoping that we'll still be able to make it to a Nix game before the season ends. Also hoping to catch an Under 20 game in the World Cup.  Have to get some minor details like setting up a bank account, finding housing set up before doing that though.

The first game they played after we arrived, the Nix lost 3-0. Hopefully we aren't bad luck!!

Can't wait to get to a game!!!

Will probably be on here with a lot of questions. One burning question: are coffees usually $5 per cup or do some stores sell it cheaper? At this point, we just bought instant and are making it at our hotel.

Toured around Auckland today: was great, but we look like utter idiots getting used to driving on the opposite side of the road of what we are used to!

Heading to Napier from Auckland April 5th eh? Adventurous? Catch ACFC v Hawkes Bay Utd @ Kiwitea St in the ASB Final then cadge a lift on the HBU team bus to Napier same eve.

I have no clue what time we'll be arrving that day. Plans are still up in the air at this point. Main priority when we get there is to find a place to live.  Interesting times ahead!

Thanks for the welcome!  We'll just do a mix of making instant coffee at our hotel and trying out cafes.

Where's the hotel? Just to get an idea of where to suggest cafes.

Near the Airport. It's called Sudima. We are off to Rotorua for a couple of days before we'll get to Napier.

Thanks, ya the Timmie's will be missed, but not enough to fly back for it! LOL

I find Tim Hortons a bit weak. The nearest comparison in NZ may be mcdonalds for a cheap(maybe) quick coffee.Been a long time since ive been there.

You are going to have a great time for sure.

Yep, Timmie's isn't exactly strong coffee, but it's handy to have in a pinch. You can't beat the price for a quick coffee and snack!

Starbucks are around. Anyway, welcome to New Zealand, you will enjoy living in the Bay. It will be great to meet you both at a Nix game. Playing Sydney towards the end of April, that might be a good time for you.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

One other thing you might find expensive - genuine Canadian maple syrup.  I have a sister living about 2 hours out of Toronto. I've been a Bluejays fan for the last 25 years.

welcome Steph.  (Managed to defeat the spell checker that time)

Coffee generally pretty good here as long as you avoid Starbucks unless you are really desperate!  But expect to pay 5.00 anything less is a bonus.

Hopefully you will make it to a match before the seasons end although obviously have a busy few weeks ahead.

Welcome to NZ! Setting up in a new country can be a pain in the ass (I remember the nightmare of creating bank accounts, tax codes etc in Ireland) but it's well worth it once you get the initial hump out of the way. Hope you get it all sorted soon!

Super powers! I would have taken flying or x-ray vision.... but I guess the ability to "this" posts twice is ok as well.

I have no idea how you managed that. There's code specifically stopping you from Thissing a post twice.

I'm just going to go with "Jeff is a wizard".

Yep, about to start all that fun stuff here too. Hope to get the bank account sorted tomorrow. Then there are a thousand other things to do. All of this is tricky with no current address. Ah well, eventually it will get sorted.

I figured that the maple syrup will be crazy expensive here. Will have to use it sparingly. Where does your sister live? I'm not into baseball, but am a TFC fan. Still really annoyed about them firing Ryan Nelsen though. I doubt they will have a good season...again. Management of that team is so bad!! Not sure how the Jays are doing.

Yeah, I got into a death spiral for a bit where I couldn't get a bank account without a job, and couldn't get a tax code without a bank account, but then couldn't get a job without a tax code. Or something similar. Finally took a friend of a friend who knew a bank manager to break the cycle for me. All whilst trying to get between the various locations in different areas of Dublin using public transport. Not much fun at the time.

PO Box at a NZ Post Shop only needs a passport to get, maybe worth looking into when you get to napier.
