Do not stress about 1st year workload. 1st year Uni was one of the best times of my life. Not an overly huge step up if you have done OK at bursary level (especially in Arts and Business papers), slightly tougher with science papers. Unless you are doing a competitive entry programme (eg. Health Science - > medicine; vet; law...) then it is a cruisyish year study pressure wise, and a fantastic year socially!
My main advice is get involved in as much as you can as soon as you can, you can meet some fantastic people, and the longer you are there, the less time you will have to take part in the awesome extra curricular things uni life offers.
Edit: the other advice I have is don't be afraid to get help if you are struggling. All uni's have fantastic people in student support that are willing and ready to help. They won't come to you, but if you come to them they will bend over backwards, whether its counselling because you are struggling with pressure/being away from home, or study skills/academic writing help. This applies to lecturers aswell, don't be afraid to go to them and ask questions, almost all (there are always one or two grumps that think teaching just interrupts their research) are really willing to offer their help if you come to them, but you need to make that first move.aitkenmike2010-02-24 23:04:34
2nd Year though - made the mistake of thinking it was just like first year. Don't make that mistake. I only scraped through, after flunking miserably and appealing emotional distress from some family issues to get to do resits
Final year - never want to go through anything like that again, The final 4-5 months doing my final year project doing 50-60 hr weeks at the uni - eugh.

Allegedly
And you'll want to meet people sooner rather than later. If you're in a hostel then that'll be easy enough but if you're living at home then it's far harder.
I'm starting second year now and a bit worried about it but should be sweet.
Second was harder but they have ben due to the previous years effort to exterminate my brain cells with alcohol.
Third year was far easier than second.
Fourth was far easier again.
And this last tri should be the easiest yet.
Cue the flack I get for being at uni for my 5th year in 3....2....1....

And the beers of Belgium at Leuven
I'm up to my 6th year, and don't look like leaving any time soon. Even spent all summer here.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Went to America straight out of high school to do football coaching at a summer camp and travel around the States. Then jetted to England to work and play football. Travelled around England and Europe basically trying to watch as many football games as possible. Highlight was seeing Ronaldinho score a bicycle kick against Villareal at the Nou Camp. Flew back after Christmas via Australia for New Year's on the Gold Coast then back to Wellington.
Went to Vic to do a BCA in International Relations and a BA in French and Chinese. Realised it wasn't for me, so went to Massey to do a BBS majoring in Sport Business Management whilst also studying French. Will finish just before I jet off for South Africa for the best graduation party ever.
Gap year is definitely the way to go in my opinion, gives you a new perspective after school. Only thing is you lose contact with your friends or hardly relate to them when you get back. You just have to settle with hanging out with this lot on the forum

Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I'm doing a paper on that too.
i found the first year harder than expected cause i had been out of study for a while and my son was born 1 week before course started.
having to resit a couple of subjects, but 2nd semester last year was way easier than the first, so it's just about finding the best way to study.
good times though.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.
