Mate, are you some kind of flake? I never whaled - you should get your herring checked. Coming across like a Squidney FC fan ffs...

Whaling is so awful, whales are such incredible creatures, and just the way they are killing is so sickening!

How is that different from killing any fish or mammal? Are you vegetarian?

I always thought it was more to do withthe fact they're going extinct etc?

The difference for me (along with the extinction thing) is that I think (I admit I have limited knowledge) that it can take hours for the whale to die after being harpooned.

Method used by Orcas is pretty horrible, less than humane even. Orcas hunt in packs, find a mother & calf, they separate them, they swim over the top of the calf again & again until it is exhausted & drowns. This takes about 6 hours!!

I have heard this about Orcas. Thing is though we can't control what the animal kingdom do to each other. But we can control what we as humans do to them.

B*stard Orca's, hunting in packs like that,  picking on innocent juveniles. They should be banned, & so should all the other characters from Lord of the Rings.

You seem to be floundering there when you resort to cheap skate shots like squidney.

Nothing wrong with my herring - the sturgeon checked it out and said it was all hoki dory.

I think it's great that despite the anti-whaling popularity which has swept many areas they still allow certain indigenous groups to hunt a pre-determined number of whales.  I couldn't give you the name of the tribe off the top of my head (First Nation People from Western Canada I think but open to being proven wrong) but from what I've heard they use every part of the whale, leaving nothing to waste.

I've heard that too. I reckon it's actually a shaggy dog story.

The Nootka? They're the nation most known for whaling, and I think they've stopped. I had the thought in my head that most West Coast nations saw whaling as taboo, but I was thinking of killer whales. Little idea on real whales, although what you mentioned reminded me of something I'd hear years ago - Google did bring up a CBC article on one Vancouver Island tribe that signed a 25-year moratorium on whaling which sounds about right. Either way it sounds like it doesn't happen.

Google and Wiki suggests whaling is only undertaken by the Inuit, which is north coast.

Norway is big on whaling. Buy it from the supermarket.

So how come we don't see Sea Shepherd & Greenpeace hassling the Danes & Norwegians? Maybe because they're not yellow?

I think it's because the Japanese hunt whales in our waters but unless I'm majorly mistaken a lot of it happens well outside our waters.  Still, it's closer.  I don't think colour really matters to them.

EDIT: Actually, I doubt it's in our waters.  Near our waters.

The Norwegians & Danes still whale whether it's close to their waters or not.

My point is the Japanese whale near us.  So easier to protest.

I would have thought that it would be easier for the Sea Pirates to hassle the Vikings (less ocean to cross and closer to refuelling places).

It's not often that I side with Japs (in fact hardly ever) but in this case I'd be quite happy to eat a few whale burgers and ram a few fat-fuelled catamarans.

Personally, I think that if we're going to rage war on people who kill whales for profit then we shouldn't be so disciminatory and should stand outside florists and protest at the disgusting practices that occur there. Firstly they are killing an innocent living thing then they have the audacity to try to keep them alive for as long as possible after killing them for the enjoyment of others...

Sickening behaviour in my opinion!!!

My mistake, thought NZ's one was being singled out.  So the other branches don't campaign against the northern European whalers, then?

Not that I have seen.

Also, why are the crew of the Sea Shepherd smashing glass bottle stink-bombs against the whaling ships & polluting the Southern Ocean with broken glass as reported in the DomPost early Jan? We have enough problems with this on our beaches let alone broken glass potentially harming marine life. You may say "...oh a few broken bottles is just a drop in the ocean (excuse the pun)...". I thought the Sea Shepherd organisation are, amongst others, champions for the enviroment?

I don't see anything immediately about the Norweign or Denmark campaigns .  But they are doing other stuff.

What happens to those dolphins is absolutely shocking, I will never understand humanity and it's cruelness.   Makes me sick.

I suppose one aspect of it is bolstering your crowds. I imagine Sea Shephard dislike Norwegian whaling just as much as Japanese, but know that by focusing their efforts on Japanese whaling, they can bring anti-Japanese people on board to increase their size. It's a common strategy - animal rights groups do the same by focusing on cute and cuddly seals, rather than less attractive chickens who are treated far worse.

And trying to get eggs from seals is a bit fiddly.

And let's not forget the anthropomorphism used to try and win people over.

"All this whale wants to do is finish it's degree, get a job, get married, buy a house, settle in and have children but the Japs come along and muck it all up."

OK, they're not that bad... yet.
