Who scored the winning goal?

Three for me, and two for them.

Help me settle a debate here. In the following scenario who is deemed to have scored the winning goal.

Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-1. Messi scores Barca's first before Ronaldo equalizes. Midway through the second half Iniesta puts Barca 2-1 up before Xavi makes it 3-1 later on.

Is it Iniesta or Xavi who has scored the match winning goal here?

Three for me, and two for them.

Neither or both, depending how you look at it.

For me,matchwinning goal is the one where without it you would draw. so if the score had stayed 2-1 then Iniesta would have scored it.

Doesn't really help I know!

Playing with words really. I don't think either one was a match winning goal.

matching winner has tio be the goal that puts you infront, anything that occurs after that is cream on the top, there fore Iniesta's goal was the winning goal.

But without it they would have won 2-1, strictly speaking.

They either both are or neither are.

Probably best to look at American sports for this, they love stats. In the NHL, Iniesta would be credited with the game winning goal, so I would assume its the same for the MLS.

Basically - "this". From what I can tell it originated as a hockey concept that was later adopted by football (real football, not gridiron), so I'd assume the same real applies.
