Obviously a pretty big decision as to who should replace dear leader..... Ive never been a big Masoe fan, and being a chiefs fan would love to see latimer or messam. Being a rotorua boy pushes me towards Messam as i really like the way he plays. Shame Braid is injured, otherwise it would of been him

As they're now playing left and right flankers, I reckon just play Thompson and Kaino on the flanks with So'oialo at #8 (and skipper) and maybe bring Masoe in as cover.

on that argument id still go with messam, similar player to masoe just more dynamic. and i think they've moved on from Masoe. From what i hear Chris wants to concentrate on being a six and thats it

Yeah, good point - I like Messam and he'll be an All Black one day, so why not now?  Not so convinced on Latimer, although at least he's had game time.  How would he go chucked into a test against SA at Ellis Park though?

I reckon bring messam in but keep him on the bench as cover, give Thompson and Kaino a start with Rodney at 8.

Queenslander 3x a year.

We've got a great tradition of producing top class opensides - Nathan, Tremain, Kirkpatrick, Mourie, Jones, Kronfeld and now McCaw.

Ironically, McCaw's dominance has stunted the growth of depth in this position.  Marty Holah never got a chance and Daniel Braid is the same.  It's identical to what happened when Michael Jones was in the AB's....Mark Brooke-Cowden was a very good #7, but never got a look-in, so he buggered off to league.

Because McCaw always plays, his understudies never get a chance to play.  Then, when he gets injured, we're short of experience.

Messam has to be the obvious choice.

the thing that frustrates me about the decision to now play left and right flankers is that we didnt do it when we had holah who would have played for any other international team and we went with masoe as our back up 7.
now we play dual 7s and we only have the one world class 7.

I don't think its very fair to bring in a player and for them to jump ahead of the current squad members. I'd bring in Messam as cover but I'd play Thomson and Kaino with Lauaki on the bench

Looks like Latimer has the best chance.

Just heard on the Radio Sport news that Chris Masoe has come in for McCaw for the first two tests and then they will make a decision on whether he stays or they bring in another after the test in Dunedin. Also, Kevin O'Neill comes in as cover for Ali Williams. I have to say that I was expecting Messam and, if they brought in someone for Williams it would be Eaton.

And here is the article:
