I like the sculptures around the waterfront and the wind ones on the way to the airport but I'd be annoyed about a stupid sports one getting so much money. At least the big camera Weta put dwn Courtney Place sums up a major income earner and something many wellingtonians are proud of

Thats half the cost of another artificial pitch. if they want to contribute to sport in wellington, thats where they need to spend the money

can someone please explain why "It will cost $250,000 to design and install the sculpture and another $100,000 to relocate it to a permanent site."
seems a bit extreme to me. would rather the money be used for something else like UG suggested.

I don't know why I'm bumping this, but why don't they spend 1/100 of the money and get an "inflatable" sculpture, something very temporary that can be brought out for the WC and sacrificially burned when the AB's lose in the 1/4 finals to Samoa or something

well let's face it. whn the all blacks lose it's equal to a cold shower for half the population of NZ so a deflatable temporary erection fits the job quite well

So Mayor Prendeghastly, how long have you been an AB fan?
"Oh, since 9:15am this morning"
Isn't that what you said at the AW V Bahrain game?
"Yes"
So you are really into sport then?
"Only when it lifts my profile and Wellingtonians support my bid for Lord Mayor"

TANGENT!! A few weeks back I asked the Government "how much public money was going to be spent on the RWC" The figure, they offered in reply, seemed low...until I realised things like the giant rugby ball, above, are not counted as public expenditure...
Remember that other giant rugby ball thing that went to Paris, London and Tokyo..?
[quote]To promote New Zealand hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2011 this huge rugby ball will take up residence between City Hall and Londons most famous bridge. It will measure 25 metres long, 17 metres wide and 12 metres high and can hold up to 220 people.
...that doesn't count in expenditure on the RWC. Evidently that's merely a "tourism promotion".
dairyflat2010-03-15 18:08:31Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.
