with the amount of traffic number one gets I'm not surprised. I think it gets regularly maintained but replacing would be hideously expensive. As for the grazes I've never had one but understand the infections - it's down to people spitting and having dirt on the boots - both not allowed.

Maybe you should tell the birds not to shit on it either.

I understand part of proper maintenance of these pitches (not sure if this part is being done or not) is using an antibacterial agent to combat risk of infection. Dirt has all the enzymes which occur naturally in the soil to break down bacteria. Artificials of course do not. Ive fallen victim myself to infection (knee) from Wakefield and its not pleasant. If it didnt look bad enough constantly oozing puss, it hurt like shit for a while too.

Drainage. Pitches are sloped on all four sides I believe.

Whether or  not it is pure coincidence, at Upper Hutt in pre season there was a broken leg ankle and three pretty serious knee injuries resulting in a player being out for at least 3 months or longer.

As I say, may be purely conicidence but would be interested to know if anyone collecting injury stats on grass v arificial.  Another interesting point is that these injuries seem to have slowed. Perhaps it is a result of preseason "lack of fitness"?

In regards to spitting on the pitches, how can you possibly stop that? And while you're at it make everyone wear sweat bands to prevent sweat getting on the pitch? and slide tackles to stop skin grazing onto the pitch? 'avin a laugh.

No but you will never stop it because its a habit that people do without thinking about. If everyone always played on artificial maybe but when you change from natural to artificial weekly probably not.

From my experience Wakefield feels a bit harder than the others Ive played on. The grass seems a bit more course too. Never had any grazes at Te Whaea or Wellington Coll, have had a few nasty ones on Wakefield.

Today - same thing.
My conclusions:
1.  I'm really, really unfit.
 2. Wakefield is quite "hard" and contributes to real, really unfit refs getting cramp and sore calves.

I agree, it's tough, and a hard habit to not do....who has the time to think about not spitting when your struggling to breathe right?

I actually do. I'm conscious of the fact that I'm on an artificial, and just don't do it. Understand itd be tough for some though.

ditto, spiting on the whole is unneccessary - and kinda gross when you think about it.

Another physical mid league game on wakefield, another few layers of skin removed from the knee. Already oozing yellowy shit, its going to be a sore next few days

And we played on grass today - no cramp, some soreness after the match but nowhere near as much as Wakefield.

AJ13, I hope that infections not to bad, I got a pretty nasty one from the turf last year and wouldnt wish that on anyone (most people).

Olympic had a player carried off in their Cap Prem game today, buggered knee. I didnt see what happened or it whether the turf conributed to the injury.

Isn't your deltoids part of your shoulder?

It might be if he was talking about a muscle but he clearly said ligament which is part of you ankle!

Ah ok. I did see ligament and assumed that would have also been in the shoulder too.

ok so heres my knee 24hours later. The graze itself is pretty massive, but the oozing is on the worst part, the knee cap. Can hardly bend it

Nasty. When did that happen? Must have missed it.

I feel a bit more sore generally after playing on artificial. One of our guys has played 4 games in a little over a week on artificials and he had to go off after 25mins yesterday because his shins hurt or something.

Reckon there is something to it.

The player had new long studs on, so long his team mates queried to him if they were too long pre-match. He turned and his foot became bogged down by the fibres and ref said he 'popped' his knee. Ugly.

Was in the first half, one of your lads was making his way in on goal and i came across with a slider. Solid challenge and stopped the ball dead but fark it hurt. And i went down on it again in the 2nd with another slider and made it worse (the one which ended up with the ball being played out when i caught the same player and he went down)

Possibly going to doctor to check this. It started weeping pretty bad and running down my leg after ascending a flight of stairs today (which took forever), it was bad enough that i had to question myself if i had actually pissed my pants. My whole lower leg is noticeably larger than the other as well.

Its interesting because thats the result of people spitting etc on the field. And in the petone v rapa central league game on the new turf, some of the rapa players were spitting constantly. Theres lots of signs up asking people not to as well but when hassled about it, the ref said although its a council rule, its not a football rule so he couldnt do anything about it.

Which is true. Fact is that it's something people have been doing for a long time without even thinking about it. To try and get people to stop is going to be tough and the refs have enough to worry about. If they want to stop it they are better off sending out a memo to clubs.

yeah, refs have too much to watch and adjudicate on, don't make the spitting police too.

It's also supposed to be part of the maintannence of the pitches - to disinfect them but I don't see much maintenance go into the Wakefield turfs. Hopefully Petone and Cap Football manage the Memorial Park one better.

I would be more concerned about all the bird dung that gets dropped on the pitch. Imagine how many birds fly over an artificial daily
