Now that everyone's got some free time on Saturday/Sunday why not drop a line to the council asking them why we can't have more artificial pitches coming on line sooner.

If even 20% of the players and/or parents of players who are cancelled this weekend sent them an email they would have around 2,000 emails on the subject by Monday morning.

They more noise they hear about it the better and the easier it makes it for them to justify spending the money.

I agree. Desperately needed. Our grounds cant handle the pressure on them at the best of times, let alone a winter like this. Some grades have been cancelled half a dozen times this season. A bunch of astroturfs could take care of multiple social grades. Playing on astroturf has to be better than playing in mud or not playing at all.

you cant expect a council to dish up the money because of 2000 emails. there is something called plans and yes wellingtons has been altered a bit to deal with the ever growing demand of the likes of yourself to build artifical pitches. capital football is played over 6 city councils and yet capital soccer only approached wellington (that i know of porirua defiently hasnt been approached) - hence your demand is really only in wellington city where there is not only the problem of finace but also location.

If you (capital football) want artifical pitches you cannot expect the counicls to pay 100 % - us the players and adminstrators have to foot the bill aswell (other than subs) so do what every other non profit organistations do and go looking for money other than going straight to councils.

I suspect the reason the WCC has been approached is because (as you constantly remind us) the parks in Porirua are always SOO much better.

because we havnt got enough money to splash around on rubbish artifical fields - if you want them privatly fund them.

Are you serious?

Most grades are cancelled this weekend, some for the 3rd or 4th week in a row, and a significant number of leagues probably won't get finished this year.

The new generation of artificial pitches are good enough for FIFA internationals, why not here?

And let's not forget that Wellington City Council is already putting $46m into 12 indoor courts at Cobham Drive. That's more than enough money to replace EVERY football pitch in Wellington with artificial turf and floodlights. That would mean no more cancelled training or games. Ever.

And yes, every funding option should be explored. But councils (especially WCC where the biggest problem is) are still a big part of that picture. They are already spending thousands trying to keep the grass going that no one gets the chance to play on.

Not yet. It says listen to ZB on Sunday morning.

And it's Div 9 and 11. I'm not missing my game that easily

This won't happened without pressure - as WCC think a few square metres of artificial at Nairnville are going to solve all our problems.
We need a dozen astro-turf fields in the WCC ten year plan now.
Otherwise nothing will not change - training nights and Saturdays will be spent down Four Kings rather than playing footy.
The whole Cobham indoor project is a joke.

Councils are ultimately answerable to their ratepayers and citizens. If they are hearing noise about an issue they are more likely to do something about it. Plans can be changed and money can be reprioritised. It might take years but if we don't start making some noise about it now it will never happen.

Location isn't such an issue. We don't need new sites, we need surfaces on the current sites that we can use 2, 3, 4 times a day.

I just think it's a wasted opportunity when there will be around 9,000 - 10,000 players from CF all bitching about not getting a game this weekend but the council will barely hear a peep out of them. Let them know what you think - it's called democracy.

$2-3 million to "splashed" around on Karori Park and wasn't privately funded -  but what a great result !!!!!. A few artifical pitchs around Wellington  would help greatly

i think capital soccer should fund there own pitch, show councils what its worth get coummunity behind it and using it- then the council might actually see them for what there worth.

you can simply keep pounding councils with emails - but they will keep tapping delete, we will get a pitch within 10 years as set out by plan, capital soccer build there own put 400 games a week on it show what its worth then start fundraising for more as every other non profit organisation does through grants etc etc and negioate a split in costs with council paying majority.

pounding with emails and them just deleting them? ha there's plenty more ways than that. Submissions to the draft annual plan for a start. Letters to the Ed like I did yesterday.

So now we should lobby Capital Football?

But that's why the council is already putting an artificial pitch down at Nairnville Park, funded by the council (ie. ratepayers). Hopefully that pitch will convince all the doubters and also help the council establish the true cost vs benefit of artificial turf. Can't happen fast enough for me.

OK, fine. But why does any of that mean that individuals shouldn't also continue to lobby the council? I can't believe you are cynical enough to actually try and discourage ratepayers from telling their council what they think. What next? Don't vote in elections?

gosh you love to disagree with anything bob! None of what you've just said changes anything. our pitches cant handle current workload. artificials would be a solution. let's start talking about them.

sounds like a good idea,

the way things are going with so many cancellations we will be losing people from the game, just when Wellington football (and by association, NZ football) is in a position to grow, due the the Nix effect

Any word on the sunday double header games supposed to be played by Div 9 & 11 today? Cap Football's site says listen to Newstalk ZB this morning, but I've got the early shift at work today (so that I can play at 2.30), so can't listen to the radio

Can someone please let me know? Much appreciated.

it looks like Capital Soccer will be ending the grades with a few rounds to go as the grounds are in to bad a shape to play double headers.  This is going to hurt the teams in the hunt for promotion and hurt the teams in the fight for relagation.  But what else can Cap Soccer do, is there any fair way of finishing off the season?????

FROM CAPITAL FOOTBALL

You may have noticed that we're struggling to complete the season! We didn't have a good start to the campaign with the long dry summer leaving the fields short of grass. Our season is a week or 2 shorter this year as well, with Easter weekend falling outside of the football season. The weather over the last couple of weeks, and that which seems to lie ahead of us this week, has really brought the season to a crossroads. We've asked Senior Clubs for overnight feedback on several options as to how we tackle the remaining 5 playing weekends and, as is often the case in football, got a mixed bag of replies - but it's been helpful thank you.

The following principles or facts are important in determining how we handle the rest of the season:

- No matter what we plan some, maybe many, grades will not complete a full season.

- No matter what we plan if it doesn't stop raining none of us will be playing a lot more football this season! The forecast is for rain on and off through to next Wednesday.

- We can schedule a whole lot of double-headers to catch-up but the reality is that the grounds probably can't take it.

- Some junior grades of football, mainly those from the 12th grade up which share full-sized pitches with senior men and women, have been more drastically hit by cancellations than seniors have (at it's worst some junior grades that started later in the year have only played 4 games).

- In the coming weeks when we face ground restrictions we will play some junior football on full-sized pitches and some senior football will be cancelled.

So, here is what we are planning for the balance of the season, and please note that all of this is of course subject to grounds availability.

Horowhenua-Kapiti and Wairarapa - seniors and juniors - we are still hoping to complete full programmes this season.

Senior Men - Central League, Champs Premier League, Capital 1 and Capital 2

- we intend to complete all these leagues. However, for Capital 1 and 2 we will structure the draw for the remaining weeks such that key games which will have a bearing on promotion/relegation issues will be played first, just in case (in a worst case scenario) we can't complete the full draw.

Senior Men - Capital 3-13 inclusive - we will first and foremost concentrate on completing one full round. In most divisions that will mean that another

1 or 2 games will need to be played. If more games can be played they will be. If at the conclusion of the season a league is incomplete (which is

likely) winners and promotion/relegation spots will be determined as follows. If the final table shows teams in unassailable key positions (top and bottom so to speak) - the final table will stand. If the final table shows teams in top or bottom positions that could have been "caught" if the season had been able to be completed, the final positions and promotion/relegation spots shall be determined by the results of one complete first round.

Senior Men - Capital 14 A and B - with only one game to play these leagues will be completed. We hope to play Winner A vs. Runner-up B and vice versa, with the winners of those 2 games playing-off, but we may have to revert to a straight Winner A vs. Winner B if ground conditions continue to be as bad as they are now. If we can play extra games we will.

Senior Men - Masters - with only one game to play (or occasionally 2) these leagues will be completed. If we can play extra games we will.

Senior Women - Central League - we intend to complete this league.

Senior Women - Premier - we intend to complete this league. However, we will structure the draw for the remaining weeks such that key games which will have a bearing on promotion/relegation issues will be played first, just in case (in a worst case scenario) we can't complete the full draw. This league will require 1 or 2 "double-headers" in the sense of 2 shortened-duration matches on a Sunday. If we can't get the first of those double-headers completed by Sun 10 Aug we will abandon the double-headers strategy. If the final table shows teams in unassailable key positions (top and bottom so to speak) - the final table will stand. If the final table shows teams in top or bottom positions that could have been "caught" if the season had been able to be completed, the final positions and promotion/relegation spots shall be determined by the results of one complete first round.

Senior Women - Women's 1-3 inclusive - we will first and foremost concentrate on completing one full round. In most divisions that will mean that another 1 or 2 games will need to be played. If more games can be played they will be. If at the conclusion of the season a league is incomplete winners and promotion/relegation spots will be determined as follows. If the final table shows teams in unassailable key positions (top and bottom so to speak) - the final table will stand. If the final table shows teams in top or bottom positions that could have been "caught" if the season had been able to be completed, the final positions and promotion/relegation spots shall be determined by the results of one complete first round.
