what are the state of Petone memorial, bell park and endeavor by the end of the games?  Newtown held up well with two games on it.  Water logged rather than any muddy patches.

Petone Memorial was in great nick. Number 2 was even more conducive to winning soccer considering Petone Club's only points from the day came from there. SportZone2008-04-05 21:36:38

here's a report from newtown for Smithy and any one else who cares.... Wgtn United 3 Palmie Marist 0. 3 goals in first 20 minutes then the conditions took over, even Newtown 1 is not immune to rain. A good 1st 20 by us goals by Richie Gray, Ed Burnett (watch him it was a beauty), and Groomie (a TW playerin the making if ever there was one). Palmie then upped their game but a little naive, even so deserved a goal but Dale was too sound. All up we are happy. Seconds not so good though losing 1 zip to Nth Wgtn ,they need to bar up more.
ps not suprised about Karori Pk being unplayable, wot a joke that park is after all the dosh that's gone down that hole. How come Newtown can have 2 games completed after the hammering it got last year, TW all summer, the Nix driving their truck all over it, athletics running around, and a brand new park can't operate at the first sign of winter?

And here it is the start of another glorious Central League and what a match-up it was to kick things off!

Wellington Olympic vs. Western Suburbs

The beginning of the game started just as the weather conditions would suggest, scrappy. Both teams were looking to get settled in and possession was going both ways until the 5th minute when Jimmy Haidakis delivered a corner into the box only to be headered over by Jamie O’Conner who also took a piece of the back of a Wests defenders head with him, that saw him and the other involved Wests player get bandaged up before coming back on.
Both teams were frantic to clear their lines every chance they got to keep their clean sheet going for the longest and not concede early.
In the 13th minute Olympic played some good lead up football, but the final stages of the attack went begging.
Olympic looked too egger at times giving away unnecessary fouls.
The first scoring opportunity fell to Anthony Neonakis after Jimmy sent a ball over the Defence across the face of goal only to bounce back off the post.
In the first 20 minutes both teams looked settled although West’s scoring opportunities were few and far apart. Number 17 for Wests received a yellow card for a tackle on Mikey around the 22 minute mark. Olympics Defence looked solid with both Barry Lewis and Jamie O’Conner controlling our 3rd of the pitch.
Chaz Lawrence then showed off his precision with a well timed ball to Mickey Malivuk who shot straight at the keeper.
Wests had a solid half volley shot on goal in the 30th minute only to be denied by the diving Olympic goalkeeper T.J.
Jared Curtis then missed out on two good opportunities of his own after he scuffed one that was put in by Jimmy, and the other which he shot just wide.
The half ended with some late pressure from Wests, seeing the teams in a stalemate as they headed into the dressing rooms 0-0. Both teams enjoyed some good spells on the ball but it looked like Olympic enjoyed the best scoring opportunities, sadly could not put any away.

The second half began with Olympic applying much pressure on the Wests Defence seeing Mickey put in a great ball to Jimmy who smashed it into the net from a tight angle. Olympic then had a decent penalty claim when Simon George was brought down in the box although Jim let play go on.
Jared Curtis made a darting run up the middle of the pitch slotting a ball through to Mickey, who was then one on one, but a goal saving tackle form a diving Wests player stopped Olympic from getting on the score sheet.
Jamie O’Conner was then booked for a tackle that Jim deemed a yellow card.
Western Suburbs made their first sub of the game on the 50 minute mark seeing number 4 on and #7 off. Olympic then followed suit and Chaz Lawrence was replaced by John Gerondis in LM dropping back Anthony Neonakis to LB 2 minutes later.
Olympic seemed to be finding their range when a ball was put out to John Gerondis wide who then put Mikey in for a scoring opportunity but saw him draw it wide to squander another chance. Wets then enjoyed s spell of their own with some good lead up football only to be denied by a sliding Barry Lewis. Wests seemed to have woken up from their eternal slumber and were causing continuous pressure as Olympic seemed to sit back. Up to this point in the game it seemed Olympic were the ones in control with Wests taking a backseat. Although Roddy brown almost put his side ahead when he spotted Olympic Goalkeeper TJ off his line but his chip from 40 out drifted wide.
Olympic then answered with a shot of their own when the ball popped out to Mikey on the edge of the box who volleyed it onto the Wests goal line only to be cleared by the knees of their defender. Wests kept applying more pressure seeing a well timed cross met with a header float wide by inches.
When the 65th minute rolled around Olympic decided to up the ante as Jared put a great ball through the Wests Defence to Simon George who slotted it past the Wests keeper to put Olympic on the score sheet first 1-0.
The flood gates were opened, Mikey then managed to put his name on the board as he propelled a rocket into the Wests net from 30 yards out, off his favored left foot, 2-0.
In the 70th minute Wests made more changes that saw #19 and 12 on for #2 and 14. Wests looked like a mirror image of their last season’s selves as Olympic put another one by them to make it 3-0. Mickey Malivuk latched on to a Simon George drive and blasted it into the roof of the net from 8 yards out in the 73rd minute.
Wests tried to put themselves on the board after some good individual play in the middle of the park saw them set up #12 who should have done better with the shot.
Not to be outdone by Olympic, Ben Feld slotted one back for the home side making it 3-1.
Although not long after Mickey Malivuk doubled his tally that made the score line now a wicked 4-1 to the visitors.
Ben Feld almost grabbed another one for Wests, but was left to see his shot drift wide in the 80th minute.
As the 85th minute approached now Left Back Anthony made a dashing run down the left hand side form his own 3rd, into the box, cut back in between 2 defenders and put one more past a sliding Wests goalkeeper to make the score 5-1 and put the nails in Wests coffin.

Here’s what Matt Calcott, coach of Wests, had to say post-match, “Olympic played well, and the better team won on the day, our team’s performance was...disappointing.”
Olympic Co-Coach Craig Hopkins has this to say, “We stuck to our game plan and the boys carried out what we practiced, although we didn’t take our chances in the first half we managed to outplay Wests and played our football”

Overall it saw Olympic defeat Wests in a match that never really saw the Wests side in contention for much, and left the boys in blue something to sing about on the ride home and probably for the rest of the week.

It’s always a pleasure to face a great side like Western Suburbs and when you can leave Endeavour 5-1 winners, nothing can sum up a great day in Wellington like that.

Much thanks to all the Olympic supporters who came out to watch and to Wests for some healthy competition, which we can look forward to this and much more in the coming season.

Haha, you heard right, yeah I thought he had retired too. Apparently Ian Porteous wanted to look at his options. Was at the game, Upper Hutt had a player sent off in the first half for saying a frustrated F@%#. Upper hutt did well to come back to level at 1-1 till the last 5 minutes when Tawa sub came on and headed winner. Goalie got a hand to it but not enough.
PM me if ya wanna know more.

played against IBU's Moroccan striker yesterday in the IBU vs Marist 1-1 draw, he showed some good touches, but possibly not as many as we expected after hearing some of the reports from the previous week. He plays the offside line tight, but then again, most strikers do.

Thought Tawa would be strong this year...didn't expect them to be 4-1 @ Wairarapa strong though

Maybe Tawa are just good!  Remember they beat Petone and finished 2nd in PL last year and have retained most of that side.

Genuine title contenders.

Wairarapa - all that money, 2 games, 3 points. 2nd team, 2 games (both away mind you) 1 point. Yet to be convinced of the benefits to Capital Football of having these teams in our leagues. That default in Premier last year at the end of the season sticks in my mind. What will happen this year if they are out the running in the last few weeks?

One of Park Life's faithful correspondents (and part of the Western Suburbs dynasty) was at the lush Endeavour for the Wests Kids vs Upper Hutt Smokers game.

Wests were under the pump for the entire match but have an average age fractionally under the drinking age.  Hayden Flett, Gareth James, Corey Mills, Rudi Coetzer and a couple of other lads from HIBS attracted by the Harrahap all played.

Errors in the midfield cost Wests.  Up front they were always a bit of a threat (Duncan "Cannonball" Edwards' bicycle kick was a special moment) and at the back they were okay but they gave the ball away often in the middle of the park and were left scrambling.

Upper Hutt were solid, well organised, and finished their chances well.  They had nobody playing that our Wests-fancying correspondent knew but that's not saying much.  They exploited Wests well on the break and were strong defensively but weren't a champagne football kind of side.

They did, however, carry on the proud Upper Hutt tradition of the post-match durry.  Tremendous.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

From wairarapa time age newspaper...

Back down to earth with a thump
14.04.2008
By Gary Caffell Wairarapa United were dealt a reality check by Tawa in their Capital Soccer premier division soccer match played before a good-sized crowd at Queen Elizabeth Park oval in Masterton yesterday.

Tawa won 4-1 and while it could be fairly argued they were that not much better than the locals on the run of play the clinical manner in which they turned their prime scoring opportunities into goals certainly meant their victory was thoroughly deserved.

The effectiveness of their finishing work was, in fact, in direct contrast to Wairarapa United who often threatened in or about the goal circle but only had the one goal to show for their efforts, and that had a touch of good fortune about it too.

It came early in the game when a Tawa defender slipped, allowing pacy Wairarapa United forward Seule Soromon a one on one situation with the goalkeeper and a player of Soromon's calibre is seldom going to come off second best in that situation.

That was about the only error made by the Tawa defensive unit all game-if indeed it could be called an error- with their double marking of Wairarapa United's danger men Soromon and Pita Rabo invariably forcing them to take hurried shots at goal, most of which were well wide of their target.

Wairarapa United's defence, on the other hand, was anything but rock solid, particularly in the second half when Tawa all too often exposed their tendancy to bunch up in the middle of the field by attacking down both flanks The visitors scored three of their goals then after the score was level at 1-1 at halftime.

It was also noticeable that Tawa were much more assertive in their approach when it came to competing for 50-50 ball, especially in the air where WairarapaUnited's perceived height advantage counted for very little.

And that whereas Tawa's midfield were quick to turn help their backs when the home team were on attack their Wairarapa United counterparts seldom labelled themselves urgent in that respect, something which had one wondering whether their unbeaten record coming into this game had lulled at least some of them into a false sense of security.

In that regard then the magnitude of the loss could prove a blessing in disguise as the season progresses.

From an individual viewpoint this was not a match which many of the Wairarapa United players will recall with fondness. The high workrate of James Oxtoby., both on defence and in linking with his midfield in attacking forays, made him a standout figure, goalkeeper Matt Borren could hardly be blamed for any of the four goals scored against him and impressed with the length and accuracy of his clearances and if Rabo and Soromon were generally contained on attack it wasn't for the want of trying.

As disappointing as the end result was the knowledge that this could be the last premier division match played on the park oval this winter.

It seems such a huge shame not to have games scheduled there on a regular basis as the condition of the surface and the atmosphere the oval engenders makes it a superb venue for the round ball code, probably as good as any in the greater Wellington region.

Sounds like Tawa played exactly how we did in the HP except they did it for longer. Man mark the guys up front and attack down the flanks because the full backs don't turn quickly and the central defenders don't sweep. Well done Tawa I suspect Wairarapa will be back to the drawing board after this.

I see the mar seconds have started well, bodes well for the rest of the season, when they get players dropping down for the firsts....what sort of side they putting out
Permalink Permalink

Having played them first up I would say they are putting out a bit of a disjointed side at the moment (and I mean no disrespect with this comment, seeing as they beat us with it) so it does indeed bode very well for their chances during the rest of the season as they pick up players filtering down from the firsts after Team Wellington (GO WGTN!) finish their, hopefully, successful campaign.

I cant say I know too many names but they seemed pretty clinical up front and solid if not spectacular at the back....though I'm not sure (and I'm ready to stand corrected as he had a good game against us) that Jason Wells will remain in goal for the whole season.

Wairarapa United were put on that ground with the help of both the Masterton District council and Wairarapa Cricket.  The ground has, for many years now, been predominately a cricket ground.  When the Colin Hugh sports bowl was reportedly not going to be ready for the start, alarm bells rung for Keinzley and his troops as they needed to confirm a ground. The last resort was the oval.  Great stand, great playing surface. Good all round. The issue is that Wairarapa Cricket are looking at ripping up the ground and re-sowing for the forcoming cricket season.  This is the only reason why they will be going back to the Sports Bog (ooops i mean bowl).

Will be a good indiccation of where the two teams are placed (obviously with the proviso  that the mar will more than likely pick more players up during the season and on the assumption that Fiji hasn't got any world cup qualifiers this week).

Being rather lazy, who is at home?
